Bishop_99 09-29-2007, 06:55 PM During the 90's I felt that the best music in rap came from the West Coast. The East Coast had good classic albums but I feel the West Coast was untouchable.
In your opinon form what coast was the best rap music coming from?
X-NINE 09-29-2007, 07:02 PM Mane, 99% gonna say 'East Coast' specially on this board
Aside from that I appreciate the music that came from both coasts, but imo the west coast shit that was droppin in 92-98 was fuckin crack.....Too Short, Spice 1, C-Bo, Pac, DJ Quik (especially) was doin the damn thing....real talk.....Now I think the east came back when DMX, Roc-A-Fella, Murder Inc, Def Jam came on up in the late 90's....When that happened then the east > west at that time.......But in the early to mid 90's West Coast & the midwest > East...
.ScottishHead 09-29-2007, 07:06 PM Mane, 99% gonna say 'East Coast' specially on this board
And why do you have a problem with that?
East Coast.
X-NINE 09-29-2007, 07:10 PM And why do you have a problem with that
There is no problem, If there was I would have said that I had one

Mick3ns 09-29-2007, 07:57 PM East Coast, no doubt about it. The funny thing is, I live and grew up in Los Angeles. I feel that with most artist on the west, they follow the same formula, which is basically Lowrider's, weed, gangs, and a bunch of miscellaneous sh*t mixed in here and there.

big_pete 09-29-2007, 08:02 PM West coast for sure,
Dre, snoop, quik, dogg pound, cube, too short, e40, pac, nate, warren g, WC, xzibit etc etc
all dominated the 90's
pHoLL 09-29-2007, 08:02 PM Doesn't miscellaneous shit fuck up the formula West Coast rappers supposedly had? I'm not an east coast hater, far from it, but you had just as many, if not more, copycat artists goin' round.
Killer Cosgrove 09-29-2007, 08:10 PM Lets see-
West Coast: Snoop Dogg, Dilated Peoples, Warren G...
East Coast: Mos Def, Papoose, Fabolous, Saigon, Talib Kweli etc..
although personally MidWest on top this year becuase of Com and Kan!
Yeah

Lot of good shit came from the west, but at least double the amount of that good shit came from the east
There is TONS of east coast acts that dropped 1 great album in the 90s and completely dissapeared.

Plug Zero 09-29-2007, 09:00 PM Well I'm particulary fond of native tongue so right off the bat I say eastcoast. On top of that you got the whole Wu saga happening in the 90s.
grew up in the west, didn't know much about the east at the time but still say the west, theres wasn't a single day where i'd walk out my pad and not here a west coast classic playin...so west side mother fuckers...we ride on you busters...:)

If you truthly think the rappers in your list are better than the ones in mine then you have shit taste in music.
lol took you a long time as well, probably lookin in other forums for south rappers.
Juice. 09-29-2007, 10:21 PM How the hell are four entire people going to choose the West Coast over the East Coast during the golden era. I can't even fathom that.
Illmatic, Only Built 4 Cuban Linx, 36 Chambers, Ready To Die, Reasonable Doubt; countless classic albums were released during that period, the list goes on and on. If there was ANY point in time in which the East Coast was dominating the game in terms of quality, it was during the 90's.
Dendroaspis 09-29-2007, 10:42 PM West coast did make more of the early to mid 90s, but I would still have to go with the East.
What Hip Hop used to be to what it is today, the East remained more consistent of Hip Hop roots. The West came up with "Hiphy" music; music to get "stupid" to in the club. Yes, the topic is about the 90s but what had happened to Hip Hop between then and now identifies where Hip Hop stands
It can go both ways. Though West made a huge mark in the 90s, the best music came from the East. Hip Hop has always been looked at as individualism; being unique and original. The East still pretty much carries that meaning even today. As for the West, I never notice an individual out of the crowd.
The East takes it for me.

None of those records could compete with what the East coast was doing at that same time. The West had beats but it didn't have lyrics. The Chronic wasn't shit when it came to lyricism. Neither was Doggystyle, neither was All Eyez On Me. C'mon man, Snoop Dogg > Big Pun? Warren G > Nas? This isn't even close.

3 of the 5 you posted are classics i'd say (Death Certificate, and the 2 Spice 1 albums)
The west coast released a ton of great albums in the 90s, but hip-hop as a whole released a ton of great albums, and the east coast accounted for a majority of them.

like i said it comes down to opinion cause me myself prefer alot of westcoast albums over east. i still acknowledge east classics and they are rated high on my scale, but the west has whole different vibe and feel that i admire
X-NINE 09-29-2007, 11:37 PM Yes lyrically Illmatic was more superior than most west coast albums, but at the time the west came in with that P-Funk/G-Funk sound they was killin it musically for the most part, brought a different sound, and more influence......They pretty much contributed to help gangsta rap even become bigger in the east coast in the later 90's, even tho you still had Blackmoon and Kool G Rap doing gangsta rap in the early 90's.....
As I said, I personally believe they were running shit until 98' came when the east fully resurfaced again......Not to say the east wasnt laying it down during the 90's because you did have albums like Illmatic, Reasonable Doubt, Ready To Die was doing the damn thing.....I just believe there was more consistant music being made out west at the time that was str8 classic and still bumping to this day.....

exactly...if yall today admire creativity like mf dooms, quasimotos and others alike and G Funk sound was something different in the 90s and it was big not just underground. West Coast Music was banging and you cannot deny that fact.
doc.mentor 09-30-2007, 12:02 AM 36 chambers shits on all of the west coast albums
not saying west coast albums were bad just 36 chambers was just hella good

What does innovation and creativity have to do with the music quality? And even if we were going to debate that aspect, you can argue that what Rza was producing in the early 90's was a lot more 'new and different' then what Dre was doing. But that shit doesn't matter. The West was doing then what the South is doing now.
The East was releasing a better product, every single year of the 1990's. You can say what you want about the East today, but the one era you HAVE to give it is the 90's.
Nas > Anyone from the West Coast.
Biggie > Anyone from the West Coast.
Big L > Anyone from the West Coast.
Big Pun > Anyone from the West Coast.
Jay-Z > Anyone from the West Coast.

Probably had maybe 5 times if not more classic albums than the west coast during the 90's. Basically sums it up.

thats only lyrics based as you stated before but what beats dont matter? Nas' hype came with illmatic and its producers. Biggie had lots of people singing his chorus', ask those people to remember something biggie said and you get..
biggie biggie can't you see
BIG POPPA
you have 5 great lyricist up there, but theres no comparison to the sound the west coast brought
What does innovation and creativity have to do with the music quality?
yea and lyrics aren't the only quality in music PLUS you don't have to be complex to make good music. Good music is many things put together. One characteristic can't make it up, Lyrics are as important as the Beat, both have to relate and properly blend. The West Coast G Funk production collided well with the layed back lyrics making real nice music. Plus the west also had some dope lyricist also.
i dont think the east was ahead of the west, both were neck to neck, and as i stated before it comes to opinion and your interpretation of the facts.
.ScottishHead 09-30-2007, 12:25 AM I've noticed there is bias on both sides, posters from WC and EC.

true, got it....so yea if the East was the best, it didn't leave the West far behind , yall can't say the west wasn't banging in the 90's and that picking the West is an outrageous thing to do.

When I first got into hip hop, west coast stuff is all I listened to, dre, snoop, dpg , 2pac etc until I heard the war report, wu tang, mobb deep. The I started listenin to east coast hip hop. I like all regions but still think EC is best by far.

TwentyZ 09-30-2007, 07:59 AM I voted East Coast because the east had way more good lyricists... But I think it's a tie. I don't get why we're talking about the 90s, what's the point. But anyways, I listen to a lot of stuff from both sides, there's no 'best'...
I just can't compare ice cube to nas... etc.
OliiveLecco 09-30-2007, 09:13 AM just can't tell.. Both are complementary, I can't imagine hip hop without Dre's Chronic or Wu's 36 chambers..
Scrooge. 09-30-2007, 10:01 AM Such a hard decision.....Both coast's release quality shit!!!
But i favor alot more Eastcoast rappers.
RfC~RenFra~RfC 09-30-2007, 10:34 AM in the 90s the west ran the rap game
the likes of pac,cube,snoop,xzibit,c-bo,too short
in the late 90s up to now its been all the eastcoast.
and i dont care what any one sayes the south aint running things now
you're being sarcastic, right?
I like Ice Cube alot.
The man dropped at least 3 albums that can be considered classics to start his career.
Pun and L may be better lyricists or have a better flow, but I think Cube is better. (if that even makes any sense >_>)

Bishop_99 09-30-2007, 11:55 AM I knew this board would favor the East Coast but I was a bit surprised to see as many votes for the west as I did.
The East Coast had good albums but personally the West Coast was untouchable, even though the East dropped classics as well. Imo there was always a bias to the East Coast, albums would be considered classics easier back then if it was released from an East Coast artist. The West had to come up against all odds and in my opinion they were far more influential in rap over once they got noticed.

No, the east coast is just better, You're a west coast dickrider. All your posts are about bone thugs or a west coast rapper.

This board is very diversified I agree. And hearing about Bone Thugs all the time from you is tedious since they only have 2 good albums.
Bishop_99 09-30-2007, 01:08 PM No there was bias for the westcoast, westcoast got more shine.Honestly, if you were around that time you would know how the East Coast was far more respected from the rap media than the West Coast was. If Dre was from the East Coast, The Chronic would have easily gotten 5 mics in The Source (Yes, their opinions mattered and were respected at that time). The West Coast was mostly seen a fad but the East would be considered the true hip hop. Now that the East barely gets much attention, all of a sudden Hip Hop Is Dead.
This board is very diversified I agree. And hearing about Bone Thugs all the time from you is tedious since they only have 2 good albums.Honestly, I don't see this as a diversified board at all. The outcome of polls like this are very predictable here.
True, Bone thugs had 2 classic albums with Creepin On Ah Come Up and Eternal, and even though The Art Of War wasn't the best follow up to E. 1999 Eternal, it was a very good solid album. BTNHResurrection was a very good album for 11 songs, although the other 6 songs were bad, but to the Bone fans who like Eternal, those 11 songs are the closest we ever got to Eternal. I would easily say The Art Of War and BTNHResurrection are solid rap album, although they are not up to par to Creepin On Ah Come Up and E. 1999 Eternal. So Bone easily has 4 good albums.

I was being sarcastic about the board. A lot of clones here, but I don't care because my taste in hip hop in diversified.
I have BTNHResurrection and only like three tracks on it.

That's ok about BTNHResurrection, not everyone will like the same thing. I just feel it is a good album.
Shift 09-30-2007, 01:51 PM East Coast because I'm from there!!
Nah I do like Tupac a lot and Snoop Doggity Dog. It just seems as of right now most of the good rap is coming from the east, and a little from the south.

Tom.B 09-30-2007, 09:08 PM East Coast easy.....early to Mid 90s hip-hop is widely considered to be the greast years ever for rap....Not to take any thing away from the west, but just check the forgotten gems thread or the 5\5 albums thread, most of those are 90s east coast rap.....
Clutch 09-30-2007, 09:14 PM I like both of them equal but I picked West Coast because I was raised with that kind of music.

But on some real shit, what chall know bout this?

Talk about forgotten gems, what chall kno bout this album here? This is Ice Cube's cousin, a rapper that goes by the name of 'Kam' that's been very overlooked in 90's and was a lyrical/political rapper
Now to ME if anyone dont know bout THIS album, then how can you say the west hasnt put out any lyrical albums at their time.....I mean Ras Kass was on his lyrical shit too, but no one saw that till later on

Khadafi, Juice Crew and The Artifacts are all from the East Coast
Edit: You edited it.
Glenn Swagmire 09-30-2007, 10:36 PM Kam dropped 2 classics to me
Florida Breeze 10-01-2007, 12:50 AM Neither.
Both coasts produced some of the greatest artists in history during the 90s...
West Coast - Tupac, Dre, Snoop, Ice Cube, Eazy E, Tha Dogg Pound
East Coast - Biggie Smalls, Nas, Jay-Z, Big Pun, Busta Rhymes, Wu-Tang
And then you had so many other random and mid-level acts from each coast that it didn't really matter.
This West v.s. East shit is stupid...
It's one form of music, and rap as a whole was at it's peak in the 90s.
Oh yeah, don't forget about those southern cats either!

qouted for the truth. I would maybe add '93 till infinity, but thats it.
Eastcoast has probably produced a list of 50 classics that are on the same level of this handfull of Westcoast classics.

Obviously..;) Tiny example of numerous West Coast classics that got nothin to envy to Livin' proof for instance, and there's one for eachanary East Coast gem from that same period, that's why I think scottish's list is ridiculous..
It's a tie, but then again lyrically there's no comparison, so maybe people can choose for that reason..
Anyway..

Most of them are dope albums butdon't match East Coast classics like 36 Chambers, Illmatic, Lifestylez etc. And D.O.C. is from Texas not the west coast.

Too bad I'm too lazy to make a list, but if I did you'd see exactly how many classsic groups, artists, albums came from the East in the 90's..under ground or mainstream...the list would never end.....point being this is a pretty east one for me....and I'm not trying to hate on the West

he is the man behind some of Dre's songs on the Chronic albums..thats as West Coast as it gets. He worked with Eazy E's debut album and Snoops. D.O.C. debut is considered a west coast classic, i dont know about you but i think D.O.C. can be considered a west coast artist.:)

My point being the major East classics can be compared with my list and yours (then what is better is very subjective)..
Illmatic/Chronic
36 Chambers/ Bow Down or No one can do it better or Doggystyle
Lifestylez (one of my fav albums)/ All eyes on me or Black Sunday
and so on..
And D.O.C can definitely be considered a West Coast artist I think..

I ain't hatin on East neither, just sayin West Coast 90's classics list is pretty much endless too, you just can't tell which one was greater by this mean (then lyrically that's another matter, and I would agree;) )..
As for 80's and 2000's, well, then that's definitely East for me, ain't no question..
Mafia 10-02-2007, 03:00 PM the east coast had it's artist but the west had a bigger movement in the 90's... that's when gangster rap first came to the scene..

Crackavelli 11-04-2007, 11:43 AM East Coast, no doubt about it. The funny thing is, I live and grew up in Los Angeles. I feel that with most artist on the west, they follow the same formula, which is basically Lowrider's, weed, gangs, and a bunch of miscellaneous sh*t mixed in here and there.
