View Full Version : Illogic - One Of The Best MCs

At the moment Illogic is one of my favourite emcees, as I’ve recently realized he is up there with the greatest and the utmost respected lyricists to ever get on the microphone, and this isn’t hyperbole I’m using. I listened to his albums a couple of times, but it takes more listening to entirely grasp his figurative lyrical dexterity and aptitude. Seriously though, an unacknowledged emcee even by your typical “underground” head. Illogic is the quintessence of what it is to be a poetical rapper. He’s some where in between Canibus and Big Pun is the vocabulary department , and scarcely uses swear words. He’s as deep and poetical as 2pac and has a versatile flow. When it comes to literacy techniques he’s on a different echelon, with good use of double entendres, metaphors, symbolism, stream of consciousness, and with very rare exploitation of similes. Never heard him spit a less than great verse.

One of my favourite tracks by him, “Hate in a Puddle”, good imagery, first verse:
“I hate when it rains, cause in puddles I encounter this guy
Unable to give a rebuttal but swift as the pain flood his eyes
wonderin why he's a gift with no purpose
A priceless one-of-a-kind piece that's worthless
Grounded with no surface
And when he shows one, it's a facade
Cause inside he fights feelings that he was mistake by God
I see his confusion and self-deception
Questions of relevance and intelligence
He holds an illusion of self-acceptance
that he shows to those outside lookin in
He's outside lookin in to his own life; lookin for strength
to carry on as a pawn in this chess game of existence
In his mind he wants to go on to the dawn
and leave the stress that came with existence
Hopin in death he'll find life
Cause as he lives, he roams the dark, tryin to find light
He's made his heart so hard, he doesn't even cry anymore
Cause he's confronted sorrow frequently
His heart's been broken frequently
It's like he's lost some part of him and just haven't found it yet
So in his search, he's left with nothin but questions and regret
All he wants to know is how one day, he's content
and the next day he's cryin
cause his life isn't what he thought life meant
He just wants to be happy, with his love and all
But too often I get messages through telepathic calls
He's askin me through a puddle what more must he endure to continue
But for some reason he knows he most endure to continue”

“Time Capsule”
“I thought, therefore I was
A man-machine with chrome hands holding plans to expand the scene
With eyes wide shut, I wasn't surprised to find this mind of mine behind the mask of time
Crushed glass altered the path on which
Bare feet would skate, foiling all attempts to escape hell
Due to sliced soles, I left blood trails for land sharks to follow
Easing the pain with capsules to swallow
Resting on civilization's peak, tasting the climate
Creating a ladder, attach it to weather patterns and climb it
Shattered the sunlight, scattered in the nights so the sky can't find it
Now how's that for a game of hide-and-seek?
My body walks, but my mind's asleep
So when I dream I think
Therefore, reality is surreal, and destiny's a fantasy
Fate is an illusion, when life becomes a canopy
When poems occupy catacombs on display for clones who fell prey
To delay on microphones, into each page of text, my heart is sewn
So when the seed is planted and domes the harvest alone
Is an interpretation of excellence
Where pesticides abide to ward off the weeds from gardens of negligence
The sharpness of rhymes stabs pin til it bleeds
Drenching the paper that clothes each body the souls
When the sun hides in the folds of the horizon
You know these three celestial silhouettes standing on the seas, crying”

Anyway, if you haven’t checked him out, well I suggest you listen to his three LPs. Even though the beats are excellent on his albums(Blueprint produced them), it’s the lyrics that should be concentrated on, and his music gets better with each listen.
This is his second album “Got Lyrics?” http://www.zshare.net/download/864466a3a0e6/
If anybody has working links for “Unforeseen Shadows” or “Celestial Clockwork” post them in this thread.

We've been over this...

But nonetheless a give a Resounding Co-sign.
his verses are so unpredictable and creative. hes like canibus in the sense that you have no idea what the next song will bring you.

Hes an over-looked great, for sure.
im bumping Celestial Clockwork as i write this, actually.

Feedback feedback!

Every single song I have listened to by him has been great. I thoroughly enjoy listening to Unforseen Shadows, but have yet to check any of his other stuff as I am a busy ass mofo... But I will more than likely download a couple more of his albums this weekend to vibe out to.

Fuck Scottish, don't write such smart things. How many times do I gotta tell ya this!

Haha, just playin. I enjoyed reading sentances that consisted of words other than mayne, dat and the ever popular shizzle.

"Time Capsule"
woah, that was a trip, lol, Aesop was calmer than i've ever heard him before

"Hate In A Puddle"
a bit more normal, i liked this better, great production, even better lyrics

"Hollow Shell"
very spazzed out beat, funnilly enough though the lyrics are even wierder

"1000 Whispers"
Is that "The Who" on the beat, lol very good again, more like a poem than a song

"Tale Of A Griot"
reminds me of Slug in this song, good though

"What It Takes"
very good, i'm really feeling this, the flow, the lyrics, the beat, he has a great vocabulary

All ive listened to just now, verrry good, i'm really impressed i had heard of Illogic before, but never actually heard him.
My favourite: "Hate In A Puddle" tied with "What It Takes"

First I heard him was a few weeks ago on Ill Poetics album "The World is Ours," on the track "As I See." Thought Poetic and Illogic were nasty in this song, so I got "Got Lyrics" and "Celestial Clockwork." Haven't got around to listening to them yet, I've been bumpin Ill Poetic the past few weeks : )

Don't make fun of me cause both of these artists are new to me tho...haven't been into this underground shit for too long;)
