View Full Version : Is politically fueled Hip-Hop unoriginal nowadays?

SH said in that thread made by a 15 year old:

Not including the subject matter, I think their music is utter garbage from the beats, to their voices, to their lyrics. I got Lets Get Free, gave it a lot of chances, just couldn't get into it. They're also not original they're just re-doing what Public Enemy, Lakim Shabaaz, Poor Righteous Teachers, Paris done years before them, except not anywhere near as good..

You said (if I understood correctly) that dead prez is unoriginal and is making music that was done better by those artists you mentioned above... meaning, "You should listen to them instead of Dead Prez."

Now I ask you, how can you expect a 15 year old kid to listen to something unheard of to them, instead of a more recent release (Dead Prez's LP's) that he can relate to?

If no one is to make "new" (meaning recently released; not recently conceived) politically fueled hip-hop with views and points already touched by PE, Paris, PRT, etc... because its "already been done", then there is no way a teen will know to look for those older artists who originally used that type of content in their music.

So, is it unoriginal for an artist to claim his lyrical content as politics?

I guess you totally misunderstood what I said. I don't like dead prez because I think their music isn't good, simple as that. What I was doin was adding the fact that their music isn't very original because political and afrocentric hip hop was done excellently in the 80s and early 90s by other artists, who actually made great music unlike dead prez.

Why did you point the fact out that he was 15 years old? He asked for opinions on the rappers he listed, and I gave him mine..

Because it pertained to why he doesn't have a clue who PE and Paris are.

I understood you don't like them. I just also got out of it that political and afrocentric hip-hop is unoriginal nowadays.

Listen to Black Market Militia, they're probably more sociopolitical, but 'sall good.

Yes.

The late 80s and 1990s were a good time for political music and entertainment.

But we're in a war now, and that type of shit is too reminiscent of Vietnam. No one wants to go back to those times...

People are pretty much sick of it at the moment. Notice how movies about Iraq bomb at the box office? Notice how a lot of hardcore Eminem and Green Day fans turned on those dudes after their last albums?

There's a time and place for politically conscious music, and this isn't one of them.

That's good reasoning, breeze.

Considering that some of the "main" political issues today deal with fast food, the rescheduling of drugs and gay marriage, I think that making music about current politics is basically useless unless the artist holds a view that isn't widely accepted.

I shocked at SH's opinion of dead prez. Let's Get Free is a classic and in my top 20 at least.

One of the dopest political duos to do it.

As far as a political message being too played out? No. Not in my opinion. Some of the strongest and most effective songs have a political message. Now, if it isn't done right, there's a problem. It will sound cliche, generic, and repetitive. But if done right with passion and sincerity, shit is great.

Immortal Technique does a great job with this....

List of CURRENT dope MCs/duos that touch on political issues:

The Coup
Mr. Lif
Talib Kweli
Saul Williams
Nas (not as much anymore)

It's because niggas is re hashing the idea's of other MC's... yeah I get it fuck bush, the war is for oil, corporations control us, niggas get they ass whooped by the police... I wanna hear some shit about the immigration issue, about how we're moving towards a one world monetary system that will basically force the bottom 99% into economic slavery etc etc... there's a lot of shit to talk about, but these politricks obsessed niggas are about as original as the commercial niggas they claim to disdain... the only difference between mainstream and underground is originality... heads need to recognize...

I also thought SH was saying the same thing when he posted that, before he cleared it up of course. But I think as long as humans are on this Earth we're going to have political issues and there will be different ones as time goes on. The same issues they were rapping about in the 80's may be completely different than those of the new millennium. As for DP, I think they're dope and Let's Get Free is close to, if not, a classic IMO.

It's not just his subject matter, it's more his voice/delivery, lyrics, concepts he comes up with and the beats he spits on.

If you don't like Rev Vols 1 and 2, I feel sorry for you..

That's fucking weak. A country going to war, yet the people can't stand to listen to the reality?

It's exactly now it actually is time and place for politically conscious music. What, you should all just ignore war, and wait 'till every thing's over, then bitch about it later? And it's not like the war is actually happening in the states.. 9/11 happen, some thousands died, and you know countries should start falling, cause USA is the God country, right?
+USA is always at war.

(Sorry if some of that was uncalled for, not all of it was directed at you^^)

Dead Prez is nice..., I respect them for what they contributes to hip hop, I just get a more powerful message from Tech.

I agree, in Rev vol 1 his voice didn't sound right and his flow was off as shit, he has so much to say in his music that he couldn't even hold onto the beat...I mean come on, "specifically prolific with co processor coma type sickness"...shit is crazy..but I think he improved alot with vol2 and with tracks like "Never Know Why" etc...

don't you know the 85% of the masses are fed "don't worry be happy" thoughts, or distracted by other things such as shitpushers getting married and what sounds negros make when they beat their drums and talk about violence and drugs and when marilyn manson or whatever wierd fuck is out there talks about suicide making billy shoot up his classmates... sorry but as Americans most of us don't think and we're thoroughly encouraged not to, and guess what... we can't do shit about it... the deer in the headlights are just gonna get hit by the Freedom Wagon...
