Say you cop 2 cds. Both absolutely insane, the best fucking cds you've ever heard.
But, one of them, you liked Immediately, first time through.

and the second one you really were kind of pissed that you bought.
then, you find it again 6 months later and decide to give it a listen while you clean your room.
then you say like "Ugh" and you start jamming a bit to some of the tracks.
and every time after that you like different things about different tracks, and eventually you like it as much as the other one.

then, you had enough money to grab another cd. Would you rather come across another cd like the one that rocked from day?
or the slow, steady increase of the second cd?

I think the second one, myself. An album you love right off the bat is great for that one reason that you enjoy it in the moment. But an album that takes time to get into, for me, is much more rewarding; it's like a listening journey and you get something different out of each track, or each time you play it. And that for me would last much longer. Whereas most might stay in your mind as classics, forever. The one that took time to enjoy will be more vivid and memorable.

Nice thread.

A lot of the albums I consider classics today, I never liked on first listen, or even listens. "The Cold Vein" I bought twice, because the first time I bought it I took it back after one listen, when I bought it again it fastly became one of my favourite albums. "Funcrusher Plus" was the first underground hip hop album I bought it, and I couldn't get into it, it actually took about 2 years to fully appreciate it. I bought "Vaudeville Villain" and "Madvillainy" twice too because I didn't like them first time round. The EPMD album "Business As Usual" took me ages too. There's some albums you like on first listen but get better as time goes on. There's some albums that I've liked on first listen, but realised they had no replays value so I'll say the second thing you said is more "rewarding".

But he said both were insanely dope and classic, so obviously the one you liked from day one till this very day is obviously going to be better than an album you take time to like.
Not because it is better overall, but just because it has been dope since day one and the other hasn't.. unless Massgyzoa meant the 1st gets worse and the 2nd is better than the first by the time you fully appreicate it, otherwise i don't get how you can vote the 2nd..

depends but Cd that's Loved after a huge length of time more often has a better replay value

Nah you had me right.
and Cook your decision certainly makes the most logical sense, but people like to have a bit of a struggle in order to be totally fulfilled.
maybe the frustration of disliking the cd initially is what makes it seem that much better when you do come around and start to like it...

Generally albums that take longer to appreciate have better replay value.

As previously mentioned, the album which takes a while to get into is much more satisfying when you finally realize its amazingness.

as a kid I heard Wu a thousand times but never got it or got into it... eventually tho they became tied for my favorite rap collective... same for Binary Star... so I gotta say...

I couldn't... I don't know why... it sounded technically dope but it just wasn't one of my fav's... after a while it grew on me tho...

It's not set in concrete, but usually CD's that grow on me stay ill for a long time, while CD's that are hot right off the first listen usually get old. But there are exceptions to the rules, like both of Lupe's CD's, Kanye and GFK albums, and One Be Lo/Binary Star shit.
