Both Dr. Dre and Eminem are continuing to rake in the dough this year, and it seems like some folks want a piece of it. Last week, a London music publisher, Minder Music Ltd., filed a copyright infringement lawsuit against Dr. Dre, Eminem, Interscope and Universal distribution. The suit claims that Dre illegally used the Minder owned song, "Backstrokin'", in the Dr Dre 2001 song, "Let's Get High", which is co-written by Em. The suit is seeking 3.5 million in damages. Dre's camp is saying that the bass played in the song is similar, but it's not copyright infringement. A court date has yet to be set.
In addition, Em is due in court on May 30 to face a $1 million defamation suit from DeAngelo Bailey. The lawsuit was filed in 2001 and claims that Em defamed him and damaged his aspiring music career after Em rapped that Bailey was a bully and picked on him in junior high school in the song "Brain Damage" from the 1999 album, Slim Shady LP. The lyrics in question are:
"I was harassed daily by this fat kid named DeAngelo Bailey/An eighth grader who acted obnoxious, 'cause his father boxes/So every day he'd shove me into the lockers/And he had me in the position to beat me into submission/He banged my head against the urinal until he broke my nose/Soaked my clothes in blood, grabbed me, and choked my throat."
Bailey claims that the rapped story isn't true, and that he never harassed Em in junior high school, and that they were even friends at one time. Mediation between the parties did not work, hence the court date on May 30.
