Canibus. He's something of an anomaly. Sometimes he's wack, and other times, he's dope. Sometimes he sounds like a pseudo-intellectual who only raps about abstract concepts, with random references from mythology/philosophy/religion thrown in for good measure, and other times he actually keeps the subject consistent, has decent wordplay, uses his grasp of polysyllabicacy to his advantage and flows insanely well.

I like him, but I'd say that I rank a lot of artists over him. Eminem, for one.

The way a lot of mainstream hip-pop etc is marketed is courtesey (spelt wrong?) of the radio stations. Like when kevin lyttle came out in the UK last year, it had been going on the solka circuit for like 2yrs,but then the mainstream stations start promoting it and pushing it on heavy rotation every hour of the day, and when the track is "released", all the drones rush out and buy what they been "told" to buy. Also u got the "people" calling up "the box" and other phone in shows on mtv etc as well as on request shows on the radio, promoting and marketing the "chosen" top 10 hip-pop tracks. cop some books, um, similar to no logo by naomi klien which tell u how popular culture is marketed, there's this new one which interviewed gals who were given loadsa free merchandise to promote the chosen group or artist round their high schools and by calling the radio stations etc and requesting that artist/group over and over. ALways the best looking gal or guys are picked for this, popular kids, who can influence the sheep in their school over time.

Look at canibus, relatively, how often to u see him on tv or hear him on the radio, or in the new joints bit prior to his albums dropping? He does was he can on the radio etc, but how do u hear bout his radio interviews? cos ya'll true can-i fans make the effort to find out when he's gonna be on the radio, or on tv from forums such as this, the net generally, and from WORD OF MOUTH which is really important for canibus. The info aint all shoved in our faces from the plans of some multimillion dollar marketing company hired by aftermath or universal etc who make sure it is via the radio, tv and magazines, gets me?

also, check out canibus' interview where he talks bout the difference between rappers and mc's and does impressions of those artists who just rhyme sh*t letting the beat take the verse from them.

Basically because his mainstream work sucked, that’s all there is to it… He gave people such a negative interpretation of him with his first album ‘Can-I-Bus’ that they just can’t see past it.

It’s a real pity though, I don’t think any MC, regardless of how dope they are, could make something out of the atrocious production his album was equipt with. He’s evolved a lot since then and has put out loads of great efforts like Mic club, Rip the Jacker and My name is nobody, if Canibus was given 10% of the time J-Kwon gets to promote his shit on MTV then he’d blow, no dought about it, but like others have mentioned in this thread.
