There is nobody in hip-hop who put as much heart and soul into their music. Everybody else is just trying to sound ill or spark a revolution. Yeah, you probably could name a billion MC's who've merely improved on the styles pioneered by Melle Mel, KRS1, Rakim, Big Daddy Kane, Slick Rick, Ice Cube, Chuck D, De La Soul, Lord Finesse, Kool G Rap et al - all of who'm could probably spit "16 barzzz" of soulless similes and rhyme schemes better than Pac. However, you will not be able to find someone who stands for the power of hip-hop as an artform more-so than 2 Pac.

It's funny, 'cause so many MC's lauded for their depth and revolutionary, socio-political prowess (Nas, Common, Dead Prez, Blackstar etc) have neither the humility nor the genuine empathy that 2 Pac portrayed. He never claimed to be a leader, but to this day still influences the world. Children growing up right now recognize 2 Pac for what he stood for as an artist who from day one rapped about what was going on around him. He never changed his style, merely the surroundings he drew inspiration from.

NO other MC's chronicle their life and their mindstate like this throughout their work while still constantly saying something relevant to the world around them. All the sickest MC's you're ready to try and debase 2 Pac against can only talk about how ill they are and try and impress the listener.

His work ethic was unparalelled and his flow and vocal abilities weren't too shabby either... it's not like he was without the proper backing production-wise after '96 either. The fact he was made a martyr definitely means many people, more often than not, ARE dickriding to an extent (like they do Biggie, Big L, and Big Pun "dead niggas get a better promotion"), but making a martyr of this type of artist is a different beast entirely. It's what turned the fan support for someone who spoke on problems, into an iconoclastic symbol.

...and, aside from De La Soul and KRS you basically listed MC's who in one way or another owe their style to Rakim, Kool G Rap, Big Daddy Kane, and KRS-One. Actualy though, how exactly are any of the members of De La Soul better than 2 Pac? Prince Paul is probably the most influential producer of all time, and aside from the staying true-school and never changing their style of creative energy and innovation (including the dawn of skits, shout outs and hundreds of catch phrases) they have nothing over 2 Pac. There's no more lyrical prowess than he had, and neither can compare flow-wise. They merely have the merits of being pioneers who still make true hip-hop to this day.

I said already that you could list thousands of MC's with more lyrical skill than 2 Pac (De La Soul as a group definitely do not), but you'd be hard pressed to find a more genuine artist with so powerful a reach and such an iconoclastic stature. Musta missed that point too...

I always hate these greatest ever discussions but I have to get in on this since yall are pickin apart every little thing "Oh Big was better lyrically so therefore Big was better", or "Public Enemy had more political activism in their music, so therefore Public Enemy are better": Pac wasnt a better lyricists than Biggie, Pun, or others but he was still a monster on the mic. Pac may not be a better poet like Rakim or Guru, but he was only a few notches below. You get my point? You could go on and on about how there are several artist better at certain attributes (ie lyricism, lyrical content, poetical aspects). But Pac carried all these attributes an expressed them better, just as well, or a few notches below any artist mentioned. He wasnt the first "diverse" artists but he significantly broadened the definition of what a rapper could be (a lyricists, a battle emcee, a poet, political and social satire, club and party songs) - and I argue that he was the best at executing all of these simataenously even better than those that have emulated his diversity (Nas, Eminem, etc).
