She lay on the sofa staring off into the cold night as the silk sheets covered her slightly. The wine was gone and the candlelight faded off into the distant hallway. It had been hours since he last called and she had prepared a welcoming with the thoughts of pure pleasure. The air conditioner stiffened the temperature and she could feel her chest harden. There was a knock at the door, but it wasn’t who she suspected. The man next door heard the music from across the hall. She walked over to the door, letting the bed sheet slip off as she tip toed. The neighbor had always had fantasies about her and she knew this. But because of him not calling for hours, she took a chance. The door opened and the neighbor began talking about the music. He was pre-occupied with a friend leaving his apartment so he did not immediately notice her elegance standing in the doorway. When he turned she kissed him while grabbing at his shirt. His scent overran her senses. It was his scent that pushed her over the edge. He stood surprised at what was going on, until he heard her words. “Come in please.”

He embraced her, kissing her neck softly, as she closed the door. The sheets dragged across the floor as it became their playground. The sounds of Adina Howard played in the distance as he treasured her body. He began caressing her collarbone, lightly tonguing her stomach, and kissing her inner thigh. The passion that rose became too intense, she breathed long and hard. The neighbor continued to tease pushing the limits of sensuality. She never knew this side of him. Animal instincts grew as she strained to keep in the moans. She wrestled with him and turned him over and kissed at his neck. His large hands grabbed and held as she went lower. He felt his shirt being ripped as her nails lightly dragged against his skin. She felt in control; she felt all the things that she had wanted to feel with the neighbor instead of him. The neighbor imagined the days that he fantasized about this moment. She looked at him as his eyes rolled back; she tickled his stomach with her nails as she slid her tongue across his chest. He felt as she went lower he grew at the anticipation. His head started to lean back and his toes curled. She was having fun with him as she continued. He allowed her to continue but he turned her around. The simultaneous moans rivaled the music playing. Both of them were caught in this mystifying act of pleasure, neither one wanting to let go or stop. The sheets became soiled with sweat as he got on top of her. She screamed loudly as her legs were kept in the air. He felt empowered, as he felt what she felt…sheer pleasure. The minutes melted into hours as different places and positions helped to heat the time. They finished where they had started…on the sheets in the front hallway. Her head lay on his chest as his hands played with her hair. The past and current moments became ineffable. The neighbor struggled in his search for words to describe what he was feeling, but she just kissed his chest as she started to fall asleep.

He watched her as she slept, knowing full well that this was more than likely a one-time thing. He sighed deeply at the thought, because he finally felt something more than just sex. The music had stopped playing and the sound of rain was in the distance. He lay staring at the window, watching the rain fall while holding onto her close. He smelled her hair and her body; he was captivated by her presence. The moment felt complete for him until he heard the answering machine pick up.

“Hey Angel, its D. Sorry for not being able to come over tonight, I bet you had something big in store for me too. Anyway, I had to work late, I know that you’re mad at me and everything since today is our anniversary, but call me so I can make it up to you.” It buzzed.

“Angel…,” he thought. He looked back at her and smiled. He got up and began cleaning up the mess they had made. When he finished he carried Angel to her bed and tucked her correctly. He began to walk out of her room, when she began to talk to him.

“Donny, where are you going? Its late, you shouldn’t be going out come back to bed and rest.” She pleaded.

“Well Angel I have some things I have to do before I go to work that’s all. You’ll see me later on tonight. Rest up a bit you’ll need it for tomorrow.” The neighbor said.

He watched her for a little while longer as she turned over and fell back asleep. He crept outside and went back to his apartment. So many questions filled his mind, but the one thing that weighed on his mind the most was caused by Angel’s last sentence. He let his imagination get the better of him, and his mind began to wonder.

“Donny, huh. I wish she would’ve said Paul.” He thought, “Paul sounds a lot better than Donny. Its best that I try not to think about it though.” He kept thinking to himself until his phone rang. He ignored it as he began took his shirt off, he was making his way into his weight room, the anxiety from what had happened was causing his adrenaline to flow. He put on a t-shirt and slipped out of his jeans into some mesh shorts. He tried to focus on lifting the weights but his mind was distracted. He turned on some music, but that wasn’t helping. Out of poor choice he put in Musiq Soulchild. He began singing along with the love struck melodies, which caused him to fall harder into the unanswered pool of questions that he had.

Paul tired himself out with the weight lifting and instead of lying down in his bed, he lounged on his couch. Late night TV shows and infomercials became his console, but he found every weird way to connect Angel to the products being sold.

“That automatic vacuum would go great with her floors,” he thought, “But then again that bookshelf looks nice next to her bed. This is horrible; I gotta get out of here. There has to be something besides sleep that I can do.” Paul looked around, looking for something to do. He was frantic and he was on the verge of panicking. It was until his alarm went off…it was time for work. A few hours of sleep would have to do for Paul, and his sake.

He crept into the shower hoping it would keep him awake for the rest of the day. Today was more important than any other day. Today was the day that he and a number of his colleagues were going to make a presentation about a new marketing strategy. He wasn’t focused, and as much as he thought about the presentation the more frustrated he became. Last week he had the presentation down to the last note card; everything about the presentation was perfect.

He rushed out of the apartment complex, speeding through traffic and forcing his way to the office. His cell phone was ringing during the ride, but Paul didn’t want to chance getting into an accident on the most important day of his career. His friend David met him in the parking lot. David looked flustered; he was pacing near the elevators, looking at his watch every few minutes until he finally saw Paul pull into the parking garage.

“Where the hell have you been, man? I’ve been calling you since last night, Shawn and I thought you were going to go to the gym to play some ball with us. Did you like forget and go to sleep or something?” David asked. Paul looked at him sternly, “Why is your suit and shirt looking like that? Didn’t I tell you that the presentation is today? You look like shit.”

Paul looked around, and modeled for himself. He quickly turned around back to Paul, “Don’t change the subject and try to put something on me! But does my suit really look that bad. It shouldn’t, I got it dry cleaned and everything.” Paul brushed past him and motioned for him to follow. They got into the elevator together, but Paul was still not focused. He started to think a little bit more and decided to make some changes.

“David, we are going to do something different, today.” Dave look perplexed at what Paul began to say, “We are going to change our presentation, and hopefully it turns out better than what we originally planned. You are just going to have to trust me; I have a plan that shouldn’t backfire.” Paul said. They got out of the elevator and proceeded to walk into the meeting room, Paul grinned at his audience. “Easy money,” He thought.

Angel woke up relaxed as always. Her legs were still shaking from the night before, but for some reason she couldn’t get Donny out of her mind. She remembered talking to him last night, but she wasn’t sure. She grabbed her morning robe and princess slippers and walked out of the bedroom, sitting on the love seat was Donny. He had a smug grin on his face as she looked at him. Donny looked back and felt the fire coming from Angel’s eyes. He hesitantly gave her the flowers and tried to explain to her why he was unable to be here for the anniversary day. Angel stopped him in mid-speech and walked to the kitchen. She wasn’t interested in listening to his words. She began listening to the answering machine. She whirled through messages of friends and family looking for something from Donny.

“Hey Angel, its D. Sorry for not being able to come over tonight, I bet you had something big in store for me too. Anyway, I had to work late, I know that you’re mad at me and everything since today is our anniversary, but call me so I can make it up to you.”

She began glaring at him; this was the third time in the past week that he was working late. She was hurting, she’d never had been put aside on the day of an anniversary before. She looked at Donny for a while as the hurt and anger began to build. Donny began to stand up, he knew that this was coming but he had a surprise up his sleeve. He began reaching into his pocket.

“Angel, baby, don’t start getting mad. I know it was my fault and that I’ve been working late a lot lately, but it’s for the best. Pretty soon we will be able to get our own place, and do the things that we’ve always dreamed of doing. I want us to grow and get over the times like these when my work gets hectic. All I can offer you is me doing my best to make sure that I take care of you.”

Angel looked at him, “Donny, listen I don’t like the fact that I got ditched for your work. Yes work is important and what not, but this is our anniversary…Our one year anniversary. It’s not something that you skip up and then apologize for. You should’ve taken me to dinner and just went to work earlier than usual so that you could’ve caught yourself up.”

Donny covered her mouth slowly, and got down on one knee. “Angel, you are the goddess that has taken a hold of me and has brought me more joy than I have ever experienced. You have made me care for someone else the way that I never thought possible. Yes I’ve made my mistakes in the past, but I do not want those mistakes to come between the future that I see that’s in store for us. I want us to join as one and in symbolism of that joining I want you to have this. Will you marry me?”
