View Full Version : Uk hiphop breaking US
griff12 02-22-2005, 02:35 PM with so much emphasis put on the 'american market' and the continuing attemps for UK artists to crack it not only in hip hop. who'd du think would or cud make an impact over there, or who you as american's like the sound of. I know lowkey has spit a few lyrics, but he ain even made a big impact over here yet. who'd you think?
The Spectrum 02-22-2005, 05:45 PM no one will ever break into the US market
the competition with NY alone is hard enough

.Inphinite. 02-22-2005, 06:51 PM ^ Lmao... That was funny... even tho' I live in the UK..
NeoLogik 02-22-2005, 07:40 PM it'll will be years before a UK artist hits the US with force.....simply because 75% of americans don't like the british rap scene....but then again 75% only listen to the radio..........
Esocra 02-22-2005, 07:42 PM Wasn't Canibus reppin' the UK or someshit?

^^^People from Toronto aint gunna make shit cos nobody gives a fuck what Canada has to say on the World stage, shit man, nobody takes you beady eyed eskimo motherfuckers seriously at anythin, let alone rap
UK rappers will never break the US scene cos yanks dont like anything different, plus UK rappers keep it real so it aint gonna appeal to the majority of the US... Why would any UK rapper wanna anyway? Mix their shit with fake gangsta hip hop, hip pop, crunk and all that other bullshit??? UK hip hop will be thriving in a few years, right now we have a pretty solid fan base n the great thing is, it aint spotty pre-teens its real hip hop fans.. U wanna be a fan of the UK scene u need to know your shit, n there's gettin more n more that know their shit... We don't need to win over the US we need to win over the UK.
crooked 02-23-2005, 08:57 AM UK should stick to UK. Only 'cause people want to make money are they moving to US.
Besides that i dont think anyone has the 'image' to be good in the US. seeing as thats all it's about these days, 'image'.
HoBGoBLiN 02-23-2005, 08:58 AM Wasn't Canibus reppin' the UK or someshit?
Canibus reps a lot of countries, he gave permission for a track of his to appear on Lowkeys second independant release... Pharoah Monche and the Alchemist also appeared on skits on that album. So in my opinion if anybody was to crack the US, it would probably be Lowkey...
Oh and Spectrum, a UK rappers already appeared on a Nas album... Whereas Canadians have what? Snow, hahaha, the original white rapper. Pitiful
crooked 02-23-2005, 09:00 AM Oh and Spectrum, a UK rappers already appeared on a Nas album
that verse was pretty good. i'd never heard of Rising Son before that. He's got a good voice, and at least he came from LDN.

Lowkey entered that competition, you used to be able to listen to the final entries on Nas' website... N yeah most of em were from London which is a piss take, most London MC's are fake as shit n now we got everybody in the world thinkin that there's only one accent in the whole of Uk. Ignorance

HoBGoBLiN 02-23-2005, 10:41 AM I think he sounds more Australian...
no..i just dont have a strong cockney accent...blow blow..lethal bizzle..paacchhowww..
crooked 02-23-2005, 11:11 AM LMAO cockney accent. Most UK pople on this site use all american slang. It pisses me off. Even i started using words like 'wack'. It's contageous.
HoBGoBLiN 02-23-2005, 11:18 AM I aint a big fan of cockney accents either, I prefer northern accents, there's a lotta hot talent comin outta Liverpool and Manc at the moment
Esocra 02-23-2005, 11:56 AM So when are you going to provide me with some "real" UK MC links? Tracks? Downloads? I'd like to listen to, what in your opinion, are great UK Hip-Hop talents. Thanks.

I'll give ya the northern side of things first; These are people I know or friends of friends, Karlos the Jackal is probably the best, he opened for the Beatnutz when they did UK... Best songs are Behind Closed Doors, Conffessions of a Window Cleaner (thats just funny but u gotta have seen the film, some cheesy 70's porno about a peeping window cleaner) and Citezenship Ft. Lee Scott of the Antiheroes
http://www.soundclick.com/bands/6/plannedfordevelopmentmusic.htm
On the next one the only real one of note is the top one 'Wife Swap' it aint great rappin but its funny as a mother
http://www.soundclick.com/bands/1/pedigreechumpsmusic.htm
Antiheroes website www.antieheroesmusic.com used to let u d/load the entire Middle Finger Salute Mixtape for nothin but I dunno if it does now
Lowkeys albums can be d/loaded off soulseek n shit like that but he's got some shits on soundclick. Go www.soundclick.com and search for MC Lowkey in artists, Ive only just found this myself so I dunno everythin thats on there but Im listening to his 'Why' remix and its fuckin quality
These are the only free links I know, but if u got soulseek or sumthin u can d/load a lotta shit on there for free... Doc Brown Scorzayzee Lowkey Skinnyman Jehst Klashnekoff and Kano to name a few.. Microdesiacs, foreign beggars etc.
If I get anymore I'll let you know

Good looking ^^^. I'll check it all out when I get home tonight. Peace.

Snow's 1993 single Informer was the biggest hip hop / reggae song of the year. To date it has sold over 6 million copies as a 12" single. I dont know why you knocking him or if you can name anyone that has topped that.
I wasn't knocking the UK and its hip hop scene, I was simply being honest about UK never breaking into the US market. But what do I know, time will tell.
Why am I getting attacked though ? Or Canadian hip hop which you guys are very ignorant against. I never praised Canadian hip hop, nor said it is better then UK or US hip hop scenes. So it'd be mature to leave Canadian hip hop out of this because that is not what the discussion is about. I myself stated its extremely hard for anyone from Toronto to break out, though some of them have (Kardinal Offishal, Choclair, Saukrates, Swollen Members, etc).

Well, I gave every single track a try - I'm not feeling any of it at all. Karlos is easily the better MC. The other dudes have similar monotone flows. To be honest, it's kind of difficult to get passed the accents. It's all good though - this is my first glimpse into the UK Rap scene. Thanks.
Peace!

Ricky Martin sells a lot of records but I ain't a fan of him either, Snow will understand that...
Being honest about the UK not breaking the US (A point I re-iterated in my own post) doesn't really credit you stereotyping us all by using that same damn tea-drinking bullshit does it? And Canadian hip hop came into it when you said "if people from Toronto cant make the US scene how you biscuit eating tea-drinkin at noon dudes going to?" So I pointed out that we've had a rapper on a Nas release n you've had Snow, see how that ties in?
Judge not lest ye be judged first... I was judged based on my nationality thus it was my God given right to pass judgement.

Fair enough at least ya listened man, Big Karl is nyce but I definitely wouldn't say he's the best outta that list, u sure u just didn't listen to the links at the top? Lowkeys probably the hottest outta all them but the soundclick page doesn't have his best on offer... I take it u cudnt d/load the Antiheroes mixtape either cos their voices are completely different to all the others, Im 99% sure that Antiheroes wud be the only outta that list that a lotta Americans would feel cos their style is american influenced. I can see why you wouldn't like the northern rappers there cos of the accents. The Klash/Kyza freestyle on Klash's s/click page is fire tho cant believe u didn't like that.
Thanx for listenin though, I aint even heard all of em myself yet
jeffari 02-24-2005, 07:09 AM small typo in the link mate.

I think you're right - cause I didn't see anything by Lowkey there... I must of missed the bottom half - I'll have to give it a second look for sure. Peace.

UK will never crack the US, but who gives a flying fuck? they're so far up their own arssholes it's impossible for anyone else to get a look in, but they
all come over here and expect us to buy their records! and like robots we do
in our thousands! in my opinion the European and Asian markets are the only solid way forward for UK hip hop.
we should stop looking to the US for approval and start supporting our own artists! when they realise Hip Hop is global, they might open up to the possibility that there is life outside the states!
Tw!stEd 02-25-2005, 11:20 AM klashnekoff, my opinion UK's illest MC and lyricist.
Pffft....
Jehst owns him.....
And Skinnyman is damn good.
