Yo, I needa get me a nice cheap car that runs good and gets me to work. I've been looking on sites, and I found this car for $500. Its a '92 Ford Tempo GL in Auburndale. Its just an extra car, to go to and from work. Nothing special.

Anywayz, I called and asked if it was still on the lot, and the answer was yes. The car look nice and clean, but the question is if it runs. Eventually, Im going to go to the Auto place and check it out. But on the phone, I asked if there is anything wrong with it, and the lady said something like:

"From my understanding, its a good car. There's nothing wrong with it. But the accelerator is kind of tight. But its a good car. I can't really describe it. You would have to come check it out."

Any auto mechanics up in here? What does that mean? The accelerater is kind of tight? Is that a significant thing? Can it be fixed easily or for cheap? Is the car worth getting? after hearing that comment? I want something that runs and runs well, and gets me to work, but not a car where after a week, it don't run anymore.

Anyone got an idea what she meant when she said the accelerator is kind of tight?

here's a pic of the car:

She might mean that it's stiff, and hard to press down with your foot.

I dunno...

Maybe you have to press hard on the gas, or mabye the pedal sticks. Sounds dangerous, it's not a technical description though. I'd suggest a slow speed test drive. If the gas pedal sticks (or the car goes even when you let off the gas) shift into neutral, pull over, and stop driving the car.

*edit*

Also, always look a new or used car over before you drive it. Don't be afraid to look under the hood, under the car, in the wheel wells, down the exhaust pipe, and into every visible corner of the vehicle. If spot a leak (moisture on the ground, or under the car), find out as much as you can about it. Don't buy something that you have barely looked over. Don't be the one to drive away with a newly purchased car on under inflated tires, or leaking oil.

(or the car goes even when you let off the gas)

hes not sayin that when u put it in drive and let off the brake if it just moves......cars do that

hes saying that if u let off the gas at a specific speed and u maintain that speed....

just thought ide clarify that because the first time i read that i was like wtf.......hope all works out for you mayne.....peesh

If the throttle/pedal is sticky it can be one of two things:

1. The throttle cable is sticking within the sleeve. A throtte cable works much like a brake cable does on a bicycle. It is a twisted wire that slides within a protective sleeve. After years of use, sometimes the twisted wire becomes unwraped and lodges itself against the sleeve causing friction. Other times, the sleeve grease dries up, debris gets stuck in there, etc., etc., Simple fix - replace throttle cable.

2. The throttle rotor/spring and/or body are either rusted, need lubrication, or must be replaced. These are just my guesses of course, having never even seen the car.

In either case, i wouldn't buy any piece of shit Tempo even if the vehicle set me back $100 bucks. Those cars are a real piece of shit. Keep looking around, maybe you'll find an import for the same price... Honda, Toyota,
Nissan, even Mitsubishi.

Goodluck man.
