Track 4 of SD ...

American Way

I completely respect the fact that Nas is sharing his opinion, but I just disagree with what he's saying to the young African American community in this song. He's telling us that we shouldn't vote or get political or anything because it's not doing anything for the 'hood. It is and it will, because I believe that the things you want to see changed in your city will change over time if everyone is willing to be involved. For all of the young people who buy into this is just going to hold us back.

African Americans are NOT the minorities in most cities, so they should be able to take over if they VOTE. Detroit for example, is completely ran by black people. Murder rates are high and the economy is one of the worst in the United States, but thats not my point. If you get political in your city, the country will recognize you. It takes patience and a willing community.

Just like every other MC, there are points that I agree with, points that I disagree with, and points where he completely contradicts himself.

"The black vote can't make it, who are you gonna elect? /
Satan or Satan? In the hood nothin is changing /
We ain't got no choices - who to choose /
Ten years ago they were trying to stop our voices /
And end Hip-Hop, they're some hypocrites /"

Yes, I believe it is healthy for every community to vote. Nas' makes a valid point however. His point is that either candidate, regardless of who is elected, will neglect to keep their promise and act in the best interest of the black community.

Another valid point he makes here, is two elections ago, Hip-Hop was the corrupting force of America's youth. Candidates were trying to censor it, limit it. Now this past election, it has become a ploy to win over the youth's vote. (hypocrites).

I agree with Nas on that the presidents are both no good to the community or maybe the country as a whole, but if that's the problem, he should be telling us to run for positions like that. It's his opinion still, but alot of people look up to this dude, and I just feel like he gave out the wrong message.

I'm for all of the Vote or Die stuff Diddy was throwing out. The black community got together and voted and it's a great start for greater things to come as long as we make ourselves heard.

Circular argument - how can you be heard if no one is listening?
