Coming off Sony's extensive conference unveiling the PlayStation 3, Microsoft has fired back with a series of strong announcements of their own, beginning with one of Sony's prized partners, Square Enix.
Flying in the face of recent rumors, Square Enix has announced full support for Microsoft's newly announced Xbox 360 hardware. 1UP.com has learned Square Enix's popular massively multiplayer online role-playing-game, Final Fantasy XI, will be the first game on tap for the next-generation hardware. Full details on the company's plans for support should be available when Square Enix President Yoichi Wada appears on stage at the conference going on right now.
Electronic Arts' Larry Probst has also announced Electronic Arts' backing of the Xbox 360. Though the company wowed attendees at the Sony conference earlier with a technical demonstration of Fight Night Round 3, Probst comes to Microsoft's presentation with an army of game demos, including Need for Speed: Most Wanted, Tiger Woods PGA '06, Madden NFL '06, NBA Live '06, Fifa '06, Fight Night Round 3 and The Godfather.
Complete online integration for the next-generation has been an enormous part of Microsoft's overall plan for Xbox 360, and their numbers back up their Xbox Live emphasis. As of now, Xbox Live currently has over two million subscribers, over double the number Microsoft had as of a year ago.
Backwards compatibility has become an enormous bullet point for both Nintendo and Sony, and through Microsoft won't be able to claim complete backwards compatibility on Xbox 360, select titles will be supported. Microsoft says it will incorporate the feature for "best selling Xbox" games, but refused to go into specifics. More details on Microsoft's plans should be announced at a later date.
When the Xbox 360 launches in the fall, Microsoft says up to 25-40 game will be available within the launch window, which encompasses a 90 day post launch period. As of today, a total of 160 games are in development for the machine, with more being added every day.
Though Xbox 360 is taking center stage at this year's show, Microsoft doesn't want owners of the current hardware to think they're being left behind. Microsoft claims hundreds of software titles are still actively in development for the Xbox 360, to be released throughout the year and into 2006.
