i've made beats on samplers like akai mpc's and sp1200s and then various computer programmes like reason, cubase and pro tools, but its something you have to learn to do for yourself. seriously, different systems work for diff. people, i find reason the easiest to use, but thats because it suits what i want to do more than a mpc does. my advice, for what its worth is to pick something up for cheap, (sp1200 are like £200 and are user friendly and its what rza and pete rock use) and run with it, be impulsive, but whatever you choose won't be easy, so you have to graft to make it work. dedication.

YO!!! HOLD UP!!! FL Studio WILL fuck your head up the first 30 minutes of use. The best way to learn FL Studio would be to look and listen to all of the songs FL provides. One bad reason to learn this off of the interent from peers is that you might not know what the hell the person is talking about. I had to teach my boy this in 2 hours. During that time, we were sending each other screenshots back and forth because he didn't understand how to use the piano roll, nor how to re-re-REsample samples!

So, the best ways to learn FL Studio would be to have someone that knows the prog sit next to you and teach you OR try a different calkwalk program.

Very True, It's Basically A Learn And Teach Yaself...Best Way To Learn, Is To Mess With The Program...That's What I Did...But I May Be Able To Help Some People Out....Just Get At Me...And I Might Be Able To Be Of Some Assistance...

Yes Reason is for making beats. If you plan on using computer programs it wouldn't hurt to have a keyboard.

1 tip ill give i see alot of people fail to do.. when you mix your beat picture it like yourd hear it in real life.. all the drums and etc etc dont come from directly in front of you.. make sure to pan instruments.. itll give the individual instruments room to breathe and gives the beat a wider deeper sound..

Alright, for those who asked for the help with FL Studio; you weren't that clear with what you needed help with but this post should help you get started.

1)Open the program.
-When FL Studio is opened, the tempo of the beat will be 140.00 bpm. This is engineered towards making techno beats, so it's a very upbeat tempo. Unless you're making crunk/doubletime beats I'd suggest lowering the tempo.
-The main screens/views you will be seeing.
a)Step Sequencer- The first screen that will appear. There should be a kick, snare, hihat, and clap with dots next to them. The basic set-up for a hip hop beat would be hi-hats every two steps(1st dot, 3rd dot, 5th dot and so on..)A snare/clap on the 5th then the 13th dot, with Kicks in between.
b)Playlist-This is how you organize your patterns to make a full song. As explained above the Step sequencer represents the notes that are being played on each instrument. There is a little box towards the top that should have the number 1 in it. You can drag that up and down to get to the desired pattern. You would use the step sequencer to make your song on different patterns than put these patterns together by choosing where to place them on the playlist window...(intro,verse,hook,breakdown,outro etc...)
3)FX-this is your effects window. You can select it by hitting the button that says FX towards the top. (The step sequencer button looks like a Piano.) On the step sequencer if you press the button with the instrument name inside of it, that instrument's properties will pop up in a window. On the top right corner there is a blank box. You would press that box and drag up or down from numbers 1-16. Every number between 1-16 represents a channel strip on the FX panel. You will see them placed side by side. The first channel will say master. Then there will be strips going down towards the bottom of the window. If you press the arrow you will be able to select effects for that channel.

If this isn't clear ask and i'll answer...this is very basic if you need assistance on more advanced features holler.

Lol, i tried to teach it to one of my boys over yahoo messenger one day, but we ended up sending each other screenshots back and forth.

PIANO ROLL
Alright. The piano roll is basically a way to add more than what you see on the step sequencer. Say you want to add a snare roll somewhere in your music but because the tempo is only at 125, you only get 16th notes in the step sequencer. This is where the piano roll comes in.

-Right click on the sample (use ANY snare because you can change its key) and choose piano roll. You'll see a big ass grid with piano keys on the left. The default key of the sample is C5. So, the higher the note, the higher the pitch and vice versa.

-Remember: the music is read from left to right. Being that, click on the farthest left square on the grid. A green box (or rectangle) will show up on the grid, which means it will be played. Press play (space button for default).

-Just a normal sample. Heh. Alright, while still in the grid, click on the right-most part of the green box and drag it RIGHT so it covers 4 sections as a straight line. Being that, it will cover four counts. Pressing play won't have any change to it, unless it's not a hammered instrument.

-Now, highlight the green line by choosing the select button (shift+E for default) and highlighting the line. This should change the green line to a red line (pink, for you feminem fucks).

-Next, choose piano roll options from the piano grid and go Tools--->Chop...
This will bring up the chop option. For the pattern, make sure it's Default. You can find it here---> Data\Patches\Scores\Chopping if it's not.

-Now to give it a 32nd roll effect. On the Time Mul dial, change it to 0.500 (or lower if you want to go extreme). Now you have a simple 32nd count roll. If you don't believe me, count yourself. Click on the check mark to OK it. Press Play.

-There. A simple roll. Want to change the volume of it during the roll? Highlight the boxes (if they already aren't) and switch from Pan to Velocity or Ch. Vol under the piano keys (it's a drop-down list). Either one works well. I prefer Velocity because it's easier to control.

-Next, you will notice a set of bars. Each bar represents each block. Switch to draw by clicking on the pencil icon. So, if you want to make the roll go from soft to loud, you would draw them together like this -----> / . And to make it go down, you would draw them together like this -----> \ .

The Piano Roll feature is probably the best option used in FL Studio. It's mainly used for chords, melodies, and good affects (not FX).

k......I got a question, this is where I always get stuck

I open the thing up........loaded in my snare, clap, hi hat, and kick

I did up a pattern which looks like this
first is my kick, clap, hi hat (closed), snare

http://img58.imageshack.us/img58/8202/flshot19tr.png

at this point Im pretty much stuck at what to do next
I would assume that its to open the Playlist and plot all that stuff right ?

well I click on PL - the play lists open and now Im stuck

:(

what would I do next................

One of the best things to do is to label your patterns in the play list. You can do that by going to the play list table, right click on the pattern you're on now, and then call it "drums" or something similar. Now you won't forget which pattern is which.

In the play list, treat it like a video game. From number-to-number, it represents 8 beats. And just like the pattern table, the play list reads left to right.
When you want the drums to play at a certain point, you'd simply click in the play list ON THE SAME LINE the drum pattern is on. So if you want to have the drums play at the beginning, you would go up to the first pattern line (which should be called "drums") and click on the first box on that line. Since you only have 4 beats in that pattern, it will ONLY cover one box.

If you're like me, you like to change your drum patterns a lot. Lets say pattern 1 was drums-1 and pattern 2 was drums-2. On the play list, I would basically flip-flop the patterns.

word up........good looks, I had Padrino also give me a pointer or five about that.....

I think I got the drum pattern and playlist idea correct now

I guess next would be to learn the piano roll and making bass lines
Ima read your previous post and try to figure this out......

but I will definetly be coming back with a question

and i know this a preference but wouldnt a want to fuck with the sample / melody first
because if i do that last ima have to adjust it so much for it to fit in nice with everything already in.......if I put the sample in first (after drums) then i can use the other smaller sounds and try to fit them in to the sample, instead of the other way around..........is that more logical ?

and last question.......I know panning is important......but what ought to be panned and what ought to be left as is........

peace

1)It may seem like FL's bass selection is kinda shitty, but there are 2 plugins in which you can get really good bass sounds.
-Open soundboard. (Next to piano roll, and FX buttons) You'll see it says Automation,Browser,etc.. Click on CHANNEL PRESETS. From that menu click on 3xOsc. That will open another menu containing the instruments it has..You will see one called Bassline, than 6 more called Pure Bass.
-Add one of these basses to your song. When you drag it over to the step sequencer click on the instrument to bring up its properties.
-Press the PLUGIN button and click the squiggly lines furthest to the left under where it says OSC 1 OSC2 and OSC3.
Press the button 2 buttons over that says INS. You will see buttons that says VOL,CUT,RES,PITCH..Make sure to turn off the glowing lights under each.

2)At the top of the screen where it says FILE,EDIT,VIEW, press, ADD ONE then pick BooBass...Try extreme settings like turning the top 2 knobs all the way left and the bottom knob all the way right and vice versa...

PANNING
-To get technical, search on Drum Panning(Drummers Perspective,Audience Perspective)But in FL I mostly use the panning feature to layer....For example. for hard full kicks I might have 2 kicks one panned all the way left and one panned all the way right...Further than that just experiment until the mix sounds the way you want it.
