Yeah Eminem, but mostly 50 cent their the ones with the noteriety cause they have huge sales and mainstream success. Common, Mos Def and Talib Kweli are just starting to become reconized in that grade/level so you need review what overrated means cause the latter named deserve it too or more.

YOU HAVE NEVER HEARD ANYTHING DEEP FROM RAKIM!! That is the point, you probably didn't HEAR it. No one else raps on his level (of metaphor) and so many people don't grasp it. If you take the time to sit down and break his lyrics down THEIR CRAZY. Oh and if you want emotion from Rakim listen to Lyrics of Fury,

I'm never dying, terrifying results
I'll wake you with hundreds of thousands of volts
Mic to mouth resucitation
Rhythm with radiation
Novocane, he's in pain it might save him
if not Eric bs the judge, the crowds the jury,
How do i plead to homicide?
Lyrics of Fury

On the question at hand , i would have to answer Jay Z. 50 cent sells alot of records but people don't really think he can rap. On the other hand, people really think that the garbage that jay z puts out (such as the Black album) is good lyricism.

in my opinion either fat joe, rakim or nas...fat joe is really inconsistent and i loved rakim when he was with eric b, but i think he fell off a lil bit when he went solo...and nas (no hate) is really overrated as a lyricist, i feel like there's a lot of people who can see him on the mic lyrically...but what seperates him is his diversity...he's really conceptually diverse, but just straight up lyrics...he's definitely not what people make him out to be.

I think this was after he left Eric B. I don't call this falling off (unless your talking about commercial success).

'Just when things seemed the same, and the whole scene is lame
I come and reign with the unexplained for the brains till things change
They strain to slang sling, I'm trained to bring game
History that I arranged been regained by King James
Go to practice, with tactics, when the track hits, theatrics
Women that look like actresses, status of Cleopatras
Stacks of mathematics to feed you asiatics
As I find out, what the facts is, for geographics
No time to sip Mo's with hostess, never mind what the total gross is
I rip shows, stay focused, and split cheese, with soldiers
While you hit trees and coast I spit flows that be ferocious
And with these explosives, I split seas for Moses
Shine permanently only my mind's concernin me
Fire burns in me eternally time's eternity
Followers turn on me they'll be in a mental infirmary
Determinely advanced technology better than Germany
Since the first days you know of, till the last days is over
I was always the flow-er, I made waves for Noah
From a compound, to the anatomy, to the breakdown of an atom
Some of my rap patterns, still surround Saturn
From the ancient Hieroglyphics, to graffiti painted pictures
I study I know the scriptures but nowaday ain't it vicious
Date back I go beyond check the holy Qu'ran did speeches at the audubon, now we get our party on
So being benificent, I bless em with dialogue
They expectin, the next testament by the God
I blow through battlezones with chrome for chaperone
Blast beats with saxophones one of the baddest rapper's known
Every country city and borough, sidestreet and ghetto
isle and alley and meadow theories ferile enough to echo
When it was one mass of land, with one nash' of man
And the whole mass was ran under one master plan
Since the world's metamorphis, and the plan is kept in orbit
Turntables we spin off but the needles never skip off it
Rhythms we expressin similar to our ancestors
It'll answer your questions if you understand the message
From the days of the slave choppers?, to the new age of prophets
As heavy as hip-hop is I'm always ready to drop it
from the mind which is one of Allah's best designs
And mines'll stand the test of time, when I rhyme

The 18th Letter, the prophesy professor
I stay clever, long as the planet stay together
Bring up praise from Mecca, make a phrase for the better
In new days to remember, always and forever

Man, Fat Joes new album is DOPE, he is a dope rapper IMO he gets so much hate, just because people think they're being cool because they hate the mainstream, you're just a fucking backpacker (I hate the word but really thats what you are) as for rakim and Nas... need I explain? they are both in my top 10

A rapper is responsible for his verses, PERIOD. He dosen't produce the album (unless he's kanye). When you evaluate a rapper (not an album) you evaluate his lyrical skill. I like how people try to confuse the issue by talking about "hot albums". What does that mean? are you talking about the production ? are you talking about the commercial success? Neither one of those things determine who is the best rapper. A rapper is his rhymes. Now put rakim's ACTUAL RHYMES in the album The Master against alot of these more popular albums and see what happens. Its like I always say, he could write a track after a lobotomy and still be hotter than some of the people I see on these top ten lists. Nas you can't criticize as a lyricist. if your going to criticize him who are you comparing him to? I liked old Fat Joe but i don't care too much for the newer stuff. Big Pun definately deserves some place on a top ten list.

His delivery is horrible, his flow is generic, his wordplay is decent, but for an underground artist it's infant. I'd go as far as saying he's the most boring rapper of all time.

:O  :O  :O how could you? damn MF Doom is fucking dope, he can produce too, he's a great rapper you obviously have not heard his best songs

His delivery is boring, not him as a person. He raps in fucking monotone.
I have 'Madvilliany', 'Dangerdoom', and 'Mm...Food?'; and i've listened to them all carefully. None of his shit impressed me.
If someone could post a good verse of his, i'll read it.

damn you catchin feelins hard...you don't have to break shit down for me I know what a rapper does...LYRICALLY...the 18th Letter was iight and The Master was wack...BEAT WISE...the 18th letter was good and the master was wack...and why can't i criticize nas as a lyricist i've already given him love...u act like it's impossible for nas and rakim to put out something wack..every artist has...but IN MY OPINION nas is not as good as people say...i'm not denying his skill or impact or whateva...cuz i kno what he can do...but in my eyes i don't seem his as being a lyricist who's head and shoulders above everybody else in the rap game...he's nice yes but not what he is made out to be

lol well actually its impossible for Rakim to put out something whack lyrically COMPARED TO THE MAJORITY OF WHAT IS OUT THERE. What i asked you is who are you comparing him to...and Nas too? What artists are you using as your standard?

In my opinion he is the hip hop god along with Mos Def.

I agree w/ everything he said, I've was listening to Madvilliany today and the only thing I liked was the beats...I'm not sayin he isn't a good lyricist it's just most of his stuff isn't that impressive. And he is really boring, proably the thing I hate most about artist is if they don't have emotion.

so if a rapper isnt screaming or going all emo on a track they ain't 'impressive'. Just try to deliver one of those verses I bet you can't do it. I mean just cause he raps slow on his doom albums don't mean he can't rap fast or about the mainstream stuff that intrest you it seems (remember peachfuzz probably not too young)

guru raps monotone also and so does epmd and their stuff is fire but eveb there subject matter and delivery alot sipler than dooms so maybe you just cant understand it... sorry

oh and the person who said 18th letter was wack needs there head examined

"When im flowin" > half the releases of 2006

as for overrated

Papoose, Lupe Fiasco (he's good but only known cause of kanye), Jay-Z, lil wayne (cause BET insists that he brings lyrics of fire like everyday) and the entire dipset crew ('freestyling' with writtens and choruses plz) oh lets not forget a special call out to that a*& clown jim jones from dipset and his sickening 'raps' choruses and beats

Here's something from Doom:

“I can stop anytime I want to.”
Famous last words that came back to haunt you
All your life, like permanent dried tears.
Some cats get it like no bright ideas.
He broke the record then bowed.
Said he couldn’t do it without the crowd, for crying out loud.
Even took the time to contaminate the rhyme scene
And drop a lot before he was out, in the common scene. (or “time machine”)
A lot of rappers are drama queens (buddy dutty ?)
When they come to the mic, I’m ‘a feel ya’s. (buddy buddy ?)
Fuck around and get your title took, cut and dry.
He doesn’t lie, even like “who and where, what and why?”
Hold it like a cue ‘n button, button fly (boom boom) (?)
Once they leave the room, they be like, “Doom! Doom! Doom!”
It’s no use. Blessed to design
And the villain has left the building, dressed to the nines.
Like, I’m ‘a do mine. Ya’ll do yours.
He stay reppin’ the game like Lou Rawls
The super MF villain, feelin’ like two balls,
For the microphone, he joins like two falls. (?)
Well we’ll see after these criminals who falls.
A lot of ya’ll is reminiscent of Rupaul.
Ball to ball and we’ll be needing new drawers.
Drawers, the one-twos that run through walls.

And:

Hold the cold 1 like he old the cold gun
Like he hold the microphone and stole the show for fun
Hold my flow for ransom flows is handsome
Hoes is tandem, anthem, random, tantrum.
Phantom of the grand ole opry ask your dumb hottie
Mask pump shotties somebody stop me
Hardly come sloppy on a retarded hard copy
After rocking parties leave the party in a jalopy
Watch the drop top poppy
Known as the grimy limey
Slimy try me blimey
Certainly smashing in a fashion that’s timely
Madvillain dash in a beat rhyme crime spree
Who rock the house like rock and roll
Got more soul than a sock with a hole
Set the stage with a goal
Or have the game locked in a cage getting shocked with a pole
Overthrow it like throwing over a biscuit
A lot of bitches think he overly showmanistic
Let go his dick if that’s the case
Rats want to waste
There’s more cats to chase
Dogs, we got to light new powers
Woke up broke, spit shit, few hours
Sheesh, been unleashed since the Greek club
Have the fans saying please make me a dove
Well, since you asked kindly
Where you been behind the mask you cant find me
Ya blind, in the wine zone leave ya mind blown
When he shine with the nine
He’s a rhinestone… cowboy

Gooney goo goo loony coo coo
Like new off who knew
The mask out of new school
Hell could hardly tell
Having to tighten it up like
The drells of artry vells
Speaks well of the hyper base
Wasn’t even tweaked and addicted to cyberspace
Couldn’t wait for the snipes to place
At least the track listing old print typeface
Stopped for a year,
Come back with thumbtacks popped full of beer
With hip hop sharecroppers
Used to wear flip-flops
Now rare gear coppers
He’s in it for the quiche
Might as well not ask for free shit capice?
Oh, my aching hands
From raking in grands and breaking in mic stands
Villain, the styles stun your chicks
While he put himself in his shoes, run your kicks
You heard it on the radio tape it
Play in your stereo your crew will go ape shit
Raw lyrics, he smells it like a hunch
The same intuition that tells him spike the punch
Curses, he’s truly the worstest
With enough rhymes that spread throughout the boundless universes
Let the beat blast
Hold him with the mask, said, “You bet your sweet ass”
Made of the fine chrome alloy
Find him on the grind he is the rhinestone cowboy

^^ ur opinion i suppose but in my view he was the best of his kind eva and "died" at the highest point of his carrier and thats y he cud b overrated.

^^^Thats the damn truth right there! People always become more popular when they die. Its because they don't have to go through the period where they fall off, which happens to prob 90% of artists that live. It's so hard for people not to fall off because they always want a taste of their initial success...its like cocaine to them, always chaisin that first high but never gonna get it back.

Big Pun!? Big Pun is one of the greatest rappers of all time. Big Pun was the multie god. He had the greatest multies I've ever heard, to this date. Big Pun was never outshined, on any track, in his entire career. He never layed out a bad verse, he's a lyrical genius. If anything, he's underrated.
