Caron Butler
Replacement guard?
<Jul. 12> After losing Larry Hughes to the Cavs, the Wizards are in search of a shooting guard. According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, the team is interested in Lakers swingman Caron Butler and have had discussions about a sign-and-trade deal that would send Kwame Brown to L.A.

Shaq
O'Neal getting deal
<Jul. 12> According to the Miami Herald, the Heat and Shaquille O'Neal are expected to come to an agreement on a new contract as early as Wednesday. O'Neal will have to opt out of his current deal that would pay him $30 million next season. In return for taking less money next season, O'Neal would get a longer deal. Heat president Pat Riley has said five years is a possibility, which would lock up the center until he's 38 years old.

Paul Pierce
Pro-Paul Pierce
<Jul. 12> While most of Boston seems to want Paul Pierce and his sour attitude to go away, there's at least one guy who wants him to stay put, the Boston Herald reports. And it's none other than onetime problem child Ricky Davis.
"I'm hoping there's nothing going on with all the (trade) rumors," he said. "We need Paul. He's a big part of who we are and what we can get to be. We just need him. It'd be hard without him. I just think everyone has to let what we have develop. I mean that for Paul, too."

Eddie Curry
Bitter Curry
<Jul. 12> According to the Chicago Sun-Times, Eddy Curry will meet with Atlanta on Thursday.
The Sun-Times also reported that the restricted free agent has grown frustrated with the Bulls. "They said that once I got cleared, they were going to lock me up [with a new contract], and that was going to be it," he said. "But that doesn't seem like it's going to happen. ... It's definitely leaving a sour taste in my mouth. ... I never wanted to leave Chicago, but it's a strong possibility that could happen from the way things look."

Bulls operations chief John Paxson has said he intends to keep Curry. However, the Daily Herald also reported that the Bulls are open to trading the 22-year-old center.

Antoine Walker
Who's in the running for Walker?
<Jul. 12> According to the Boston Herald, the Antoine Walker rumors are new to Danny Ainge. "I've had no conversations," Ainge said. "I have not had one conversation with anybody about Antoine. Not one."
The Boston Herald and Sacramento Bee had reported a potential sign-and-trade with the Kings for the versatile power forward. Said Mark Bartelstein, Walker's agent, in the Bee: "I spoke with (Kings president of basketball operations) Geoff (Petrie) and explored some sign-and-trade possibilities."

The New York Times also reported that the Knicks are interested, as are the Rockets and Celtics, according to the Herald.

Stromile Swift
Swift fits in Houston
<Jul. 12> The Nets are planning to meet with Stromile Swift today, reports the New York Daily News. While Shareef Abdur-Rahim seems to be the team's top choice to fill the power forward spot, they can't afford to wait for Abdur-Rahim's decision as he continues to meet with other teams.
Swift has already met with the Rockets and came away impressed, the Houston Chronicle reported. "They have a good team, a good coaching staff," Swift said. "For me, I think that's something I want to be a part of, a winning team, and hopefully I can come in and add on to what they built here and try to help them try to bring home a championship."
(interested: Nets? Knicks? 76ers? Rockets?)

Shareef Abdur-Raheem
Empty Nets?
<Jul. 12> The Nets want Shareef Abdur-Rahim and are working on a sign-and-trade deal with the Blazers that would include their $5 million trade exception. However, Blazers GM John Nash isn't cooperating, reports the Star-Ledger and the Oregonian.
"The trade exception doesn't interest us -- we'd have no use for it," said Nash. "We would be only amenable to discussing draft picks."
(interested: Spurs? Heat? Magic? Nets?)

Larry Brown
Brown out?
<Jul. 11> The Larry Brown situation gets cloudier by the day. Recent talk has Pistons owner Bill Davidson on the verge of firing the legendary coach, the New York Daily News reports. And the Knicks are now hopeful again at the chances of hiring Brown.
However, last week in the New York Post, Brown's wife was quoted as saying, "We're going to be back in Detroit next year. He's not going to coach the Knicks, and that's a fact. We wish the Knicks well."

Ronald Murray
Flip for Nuggets?
<Jul. 11> The Nuggets are still searching for guard help and are interested in the Sonics' restricted free agent guard, Ronald "Flip" Murray. According to the Rocky Mountain News, Nuggets coach George Karl has had conversations with Murray's agent, Arn Tellem, and has also exchanged voice-mail messages with Murray.
"I had Ronald for six months in Milwaukee," said Karl. "He's blossomed and played very well. ... I didn't think he would be as explosive as he has been."

The Nuggets can only offer a midlevel exception.

Joe Johnson
Mo' Joe
<Jul. 10> ESPN.com's Marc Stein reports that the Hawks have given Suns restricted agent Joe Johnson a firm commitment that they'll sign him to a maximum offer sheet, expected to be a five-year, $70 million deal. However, Johnson's camp was informed that Phoenix intends to match Atlanta's offer.

Bobby Simmons
It's Bobby's world
<Jul. 9> Bobby Simmons is leaving L.A. for Milwaukee. The NBA's Most Improved Player has agreed to a five-year deal with the Bucks

Larry Hughes
Larry teams up with LeBron
<Jul. 8> Larry Hughes has come to terms with the Cleveland Cavaliers on a five-year deal, his agent, Jeff Wechsler.

Chris Duhon
Duhon dealing with the Bulls
<Jul. 8> According to the Chicago Tribune, Chris Duhon's agent, Bill Duffy, will meet with John Paxson today, and both sides are confident a deal can be reached soon.
Duhon, a restricted free agent, is seeking a three-year contract worth about $6 million. If the Bulls sign him, the team will probably not be a player in the unrestricted free-agent market since Duhon's salary will dip into their mid-level exception.

Brian Scalabrine
Celtics land Scalabrine
<Jul. 8> Nets free agent Brian Scalabrine has reached an agreement in principle with the Celtics on a five-year, $15 million contract, says the Boston Herald.

Jerome James
Thinking big
<Jul. 8> Isiah Thomas seems to have narrowed his big man search down to Stromile Swift and Jerome James, the Star-Ledger reports.
"I'd like to add another shot-blocker to the team," Thomas said. "Right now, there are a couple of players out there, one of them gives us length (Swift) and the other one gives us girth (James). If I can add either one of those players, it would be a good addition in the off-season for us, because both of those guys can block shots."

Cliff Robinson
Robinson's neighborhood: Miami?
<Jul. 8> Clifford Robinson is interested in talking contract with the Miami Heat, the Sun-Sentinel reports. "We are trying to get together right now," Robinson's agent Brad Marshall said. "There is nothing definitive yet."
The Nets declined to pick up Robinson's option for next season.

Michael Redd
He'll take the Bucks
<Jul. 7> Michael Redd has agreed to re-sign with the Milwaukee Bucks, instead of the Cleveland Cavaliers.
"He's going to get a max deal in Milwaukee for $90 to $96 million, depending on what the cap is, over six years," Redd's agent, Kevin Poston, told The Associated Press.

Stephon Marbury
Marbury in the Middle
<Jul. 7> Knicks president Isiah Thomas is denying reports that he is shopping his star player, Stephon Marbury. According to the New York Times and the Daily News, Thomas had this to say concerning the rumors: "That is so far from the truth. And I'm ashamed for you guys that you even have to ask me that, because there is absolutely no truth to it at all."
When told that several general managers confirmed that they had talked to Thomas about Marbury, the former Bad Boy erupted. "Tell the GMs, whoever the GM is, to put his name on it," Thomas said.

The New York Times had reported last week that two sources said the Knicks are open to moving Marbury. While ESPN Insider Chad Ford reported Marbury rumors concerning a sign-and-trade with the Sixers for center Samuel Dalembert and also a potential deal with the Hawks for forward Al Harrington.
(interested: Hawks? 76ers?)

Nene Hilario
King Nene?
<Jul. 7> Apparently the Nuggets don't like the sound of that. Sacramento has shown interest in Nene and there have been rumblings about a sign-and-trade scenario involving him and Kings free agent guard Cuttino Mobley. But Nuggets general manager Kiki Vandeweghe said he is not shopping his power forward, the Rocky Mountain News reports.
"I am not looking to trade Nene," Vandeweghe said. "I like him. I view him as one of our core guys."

Udonis Haslem
Haslem feels the Heat
<Jul. 7> According to the Sun-Sentinel, Udonis Haslem is willing to sign with the Heat for less money than he might command elsewhere. The Hawks and Cavs have expressed interest in the power forward, but he wants to remain loyal to the team that took a chance on him.
"I am forever thankful to those guys and if we can get anything close to a deal done, something around the range of what I should get, even if it's not as much, I will be glad to take it," Haslem said.
(interested: Heat? Cavs? Hawks?)

Robert Horry
Horry prefers Spurs
<Jul. 6> According to the San Antonio Express-News, Big Shot Rob has agreed to a three-year deal with the Spurs, putting to rest any ideas of a reunion with Shaq in Miami.

Doug Christie
Christie wants out of Orlando
<Jul. 6> Doug Christie never got it going with the Magic and after his season-ending ankle surgery, he demanded a trade. And even with all of the front-office changes, he's still looking to get out, Florida Today reports.
"Hopefully he'll have a change of mind," new head coach Brian Hill said, "because I think Doug is a pretty good basketball player, especially at the defensive end of the floor. I'd love to have him back here to try and fit in with this team."

Cuttino Mobley
Mountain time for Mobley?
<Jul. 6> The Nuggets are high on Cuttino Mobley's list. According to the Denver Post, Mobley's agent, Andy Miller, spoke to Nuggets general manager Kiki Vandeweghe several times Tuesday. Said Miller: "(Mobley) thinks (Karl) can fine-tune his game and make him better while also helping take the team to the playoffs."
Mobley, who declined his option with Sacramento, would fill a need for Denver -- 3-point shooting. However, the Nuggets may have only the mid-level exception to offer, so a sign-and-trade may be in order. According to the Rocky Mountain News, the Kings want Nene.

The Los Angeles Clippers are also reportedly interested in Mobley, says the Post.

Greg Buckner
Who's got Buckner's back?
<Jul. 6> The Denver Post is reporting that Greg Buckner is still interested in returning to the Nuggets. "They'd like him back and he'd like to be back," Buckner's agent, Steve Kauffman, said.
Buckner is looking for a deal that at least approaches the mid-level exception range. Kauffman also said his client has heard from five or six teams, with Houston believed to be among them.

Marko Jaric
Marko on the market
<Jul. 6> According to the L.A. Times, the Clippers are expected to renew talks about re-signing Jaric. But they may have competition in the Denver Nuggets, who are among the teams interested in the restricted free agent point guard.

Ray Allen
<Jul. 5> Ray Allen's agent, Lon Babby, told ESPN Insider Chad Ford that Allen has agreed to terms with the Sonics on a five-year deal. The Hawks and Clippers were also reported to be interested.

If Ilgauskas can't live with the Cavs new offer, the Cavs might be better off going young and trying to lure Tyson Chandler, Samuel Dalembert or LeBron's favorite, Eddy Curry, to Cleveland.

If they can add a big, athletic, shot-blocking rebounder like Chandler or Dalembert to the mix, they could either keep Gooden or swap him for a more stable low-post scorer. Shareef Abdur-Rahim, Al Harrington, Mike Sweetney and Chris Wilcox are all available via trade or sign-and-trade.

If they keep Ilgauskas or grab a guy like Curry, the Cavs will look for a bruising, rebounding power forward who can defend and do the dirty work in the paint that Ilgauskas and Gooden don't provide. Reggie Evans, Udonis Haslem, P.J. Brown or even, yes, Carlos Boozer could be available via trade or sign-and-trade.

Why won't Curry, Chandler or Dalembert see Big Contratcs??

Samuel Dalembert: Of the three top big men on the market, Dalembert has the most upside. He has great range and is athletic, with great shot blocking instincts. He's shown he can be a volume rebounder and his offensive game is emerging. He was very inconsistent at times this season, but in the playoffs against the Pistons, he played the part of a franchise center. Will he get paid like one?

The Sixers made a power move this offseason, firing head coach Jim O'Brien (who wasn't a Dalembert fan) and replacing him with Mo Cheeks (who is). Philly let it be known that O'Brien was fired, in part, because the Sixers are committed to Dalembert. That's been enough to discourage other teams from pursuing Dalembert. Almost every GM in the league that Insider talked to believes Philadelphia would match even a max offer.

Don't be so sure. The Sixers have been meeting with Dalembert's agent but have been unable to strike a deal. Philly apparently has drawn a line in the sand millions away from a max-type offer. Dalembert, who's had a rocky four years, with four different coaches in just the last two years, isn't impressed.

The Hawks and Sonics are both big fans of Dalembert and have the money to offer big dollars. Other teams, like the Knicks, are willing to do sign-and-trades.

Tyson Chandler: Chandler is younger than Dalembert and has produced at about the same rate or better, especially when he's been healthy. He's a better rebounder than Dalembert and a superior overall defender. The fact that he's a legit 7-foot-2 and has a tremendous work ethic also helps his cause. But questions about his back and his lack of an offensive game have raised questions about Chander's value in free agency.

It's also widely believed that the Bulls will match any offer for Chandler. He's a favorite of Chicago GM John Paxson and the Bulls know they can't afford to lose both Chandler and Curry this summer. If Paxson has to choose, Chandler is the guy.

The problem for Chandler is getting a team such as Atlanta or Seattle to make a move for him. While those teams have shown polite interest, none has been willing to offer the big deal it would take for Chicago to think twice.

Meanwhile, Chandler continues to wait for the Bulls to make a big offer. He is hoping that Dalembert will cut a lucrative deal, setting the market. As it stands right now, both remain in limbo.

If the Bulls' offer does not rise significantly this summer, look for Chandler to sign his one-year tender offer and become an unrestricted free agent next summer.

Eddy Curry: Curry is the hardest free agent of the three to project. Offensively, he's light-years ahead of both Dalembert and Chandler. But he's also the shortest of the group, a listless defender and, at best, an ordinary rebounder. That he's struggled with his weight over the years and a mysterious heart ailment recently hasn't helped his cause.

Curry is still waiting for an offer from the Bulls. He's spent the past few weeks in Chicago, working out with Michael Jordan's former trainer, Tim Grover, to get back into playing shape.

Of the other teams, the Hawks have shown the most interest in Curry and invited him to visit this week. However, Curry balked until he could get in better shape.

While Paxson maintains that the team wants to re-sign Curry, the GMs Insider spoke with all believe the Bulls are posturing. The Bulls don't want him back if he's going to command a big salary and are hoping that they can work out a sign-and-trade that gets them something back in return. The rumor has been that a Curry-for-Al Harrington swap might be the final resolution of the Eddy Curry era in Chicago.

good thread..

my 2 favorite teams are working the offseason real well so far (Knicks and Cavs). im still hoping for the knicks to sign another big man, kwame brown eddy curry and jerome james i have heard as possibilities, and i see who u mentioned in ur posts, and all would be really good fits and easy starters for the team. channing frye should start at center but i dont think mike sweetney and malik rose starting at the 4 is a formula for success.

marbury, crawford, Q, (free agent), channing frye... release houston and save huge money... if we cant pull off the free agent big man signing, then try to trade tim thomas and package another player for a good big man like samuel dalembert, after saving huge money from cutting houston... the bench would be nate robinson, trevor ariza, possibly tim thomas, very unlikely and hopefully not allan houston, mike sweetney, malik rose, and the garbage guys. im liking this team. pull something off, isiah.

Udonis Haslem Update

Starting power forward Udonis Haslem -- a Miami native who wanted to stay in his hometown so badly that he apparently turned down more lucrative offers from other clubs -- has agreed to a five-year contract that could be worth in the range of $33 million to $34 million, his agent, Jason Levien said.

The exact amount of the deal, which cannot be signed until at least July 22, won't be known for a few more days. Haslem will receive $5.5 million next season and then a 10.5 percent raise in each subsequent year.

here are the specifics of what u were talking about..

Kwame Brown
Kwame and Kobe
<Jul. 14> If Kwame Brown had a hard time playing with MJ, imagine what it'll be like suiting up with Kobe. According to the L.A. Times, the Lakers have agreed in principle on a sign-and-trade deal that would land them the former No. 1 pick for Caron Butler and likely Chucky Atkins. Brown would receive a two-year contract from the Lakers with a third-year team option. Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak and Wizards president Ernie Grunfeld declined to comment Wednesday.

Jerome James
Thinking big
<Jul. 14> The Knicks wanted to plug the middle with size and are doing just that with a 7-foot-1 center. Jerome James and the Knicks have agreed to terms on a five-year deal worth $29 million, reports the New York Times. He cannot officially sign until July 22.

Cuttino Mobley
Mobley's moving
<Jul. 14> Cuttino Mobley has agreed to a five-year contract worth about $42 million with the Los Angeles Clippers, the Washington Post reports. He cannot officially sign until July 22. The Clips beat out the Wizards and Nuggets for the shooting guard's services.

Juan Dixon
Heat seeking guard
<Jul. 14> With unrestricted free agent Keyon Dooling possibly on the move, the Miami Heat have been in contact with Wizards guard Juan Dixon, reports the Washington Post.

Eddie Curry Update
Bulls on the Brain
<Jul. 14> Scheduled to meet with the Hawks today, Eddy Curry still has the Bulls on his mind, the Chicago Tribune reports. "My heart never changed," he said. "Chicago always will be the place I want to be. Right now it's just business."

Donyell Marshall
Wizards eye Marshall
<Jul. 13> While the Wizards are still looking for some guard help due to the departure of Larry Hughes, the team has also scheduled a meeting this weekend with free agent forward Donyell Marshall, the Washington Post reports.

Pat Riley
Riley's coaching itch
<Jul. 13> Should Stan Van Gundy be worried about his job security in Miami? Well, it sure looks like it, writes Sun-Sentinel columnist Ethan J. Skolnick. While team president Pat Riley has said he would like to take "a little bit more of an active participation" in the context of coaching, he has yet to lend his support for Van Gundy in the face of this latest controversy.
As for Van Gundy's take? "Right now, I'm coach of the Miami Heat," he said. "I won't be in a different role with the Miami Heat."

Voshon Lenard
Nuggets still deciding on Lenard
<Jul. 13> The Nuggets can buy out Voshon Lenard's contract by Thursday, but may be leaning towards keeping the shooting guard, the Rocky Mountain News reports. Nuggets general manager Kiki Vandeweghe and coach George Karl have spoken of wanting Lenard, whose $3.27 million contract can be bought out for $250,000.
Lenard, who tore his left Achilles' tendon last season, is expected to work out for Denver officials Thursday morning.

Lakers Agree to Get Brown
Team will give up Butler and either Atkins or George to acquire the former overall No. 1 pick from the Wizards.

By Mike Bresnahan, Times Staff Writer

The Lakers have taken another bold step to remake their roster, agreeing in principle on a trade that would bring forward-center Kwame Brown from the Washington Wizards and would send Caron Butler and likely Chucky Atkins to Washington.

Brown, 6 feet 11, was drafted No. 1 overall in 2001 and fell on hard times last season with the Wizards, but he has the potential to be an impact post player.

Laker General Manager Mitch Kupchak and Wizard President Ernie Grunfeld declined to comment Wednesday, but sources said the components of the deal were in place involving Brown and Butler. The Wizards could choose small forward Devean George instead of Atkins to complete the deal.

NBA teams cannot announce free-agent signings or sign-and-trade transactions until a league moratorium is lifted July 22.

Brown, 23, received two guaranteed years with a third-year option held by the team. The Lakers will not be parting with the 2006 first-round pick they received from the Miami Heat in the Shaquille O'Neal trade last July.

In 2001, Brown became the first high school player taken with the top pick in the draft, but he has been erratic and enigmatic throughout his first four seasons.

Last season, he was suspended before Game 5 of the Wizards' first-round series against the Chicago Bulls and missed seven playoff games because he had groused as his playing time decreased, claiming a stomach illness and missing a practice.

Brown was also suspended for a game last December because he reportedly walked away from the huddle during a timeout as Wizard Coach Eddie Jordan questioned his failure on a defensive assignment.

In his first two seasons, Brown clashed with aging guard Michael Jordan and former Wizard coach Doug Collins.

Brown showed traces of improvement in his third season, averaging a career-best 10.9 points and 7.4 rebounds, but he broke his right foot during a pickup game last summer and started the 2004-05 season on the injured list.

Brown was out of shape most of last season, playing only 42 games and averaging seven points and 4.9 rebounds. He was booed at home numerous times.

Off the court, Brown has been troubled, getting arrested in 2002 for driving 120 mph and again in 2003 for driving under the influence.

The Wizards are interested in Butler in the wake of losing unrestricted free-agent guard Larry Hughes to the Cleveland Cavaliers. Butler, who played small forward and shooting guard last season, was one of the Lakers' most consistent players down the stretch, averaging 21.9 points over his last 15 games.

Butler, 25, was one of three players acquired from Miami in the O'Neal trade. If the Lakers waive Brian Grant to save $30 million in luxury taxes as part of a one-time amnesty provision under the new collective bargaining agreement, Lamar Odom would be the only Laker left from the O'Neal trade.

Atkins, 30, averaged a career-best 13.6 points last season for the Lakers but his lack of size made him a poor fit for a triangle offense that has historically worked better with taller guards under Phil Jackson.

With the addition of Brown, the Lakers would have under contract Kobe Bryant, Odom, Chris Mihm, Jumaine Jones, Brian Cook, Slava Medvedenko, Sasha Vujacic, Luke Walton, Andrew Bynum and Ronny Turiaf. Atkins or George would also be under contract.

*

THE DEAL

Lakers acquire:

• Center-forward Kwame Brown and agree in principle on a two-year contract with Brown, including a team option for a third year.

Lakers send:

• Forward Caron Butler and probably point guard Chucky Atkins to Washington. The Wizards are likely to take Atkins but could choose forward Devean George to complete the deal.

Knicks plug hole with 7-1 James
Thursday, July 14, 2005
BY DAVID WALDSTEIN
Star-Ledger Staff
Knicks president Isiah Thomas plugged a gaping hole in the middle of his team yesterday when he came to terms with 7-footer Jerome James on a five-year contract, according to James' agent, Marc Fleisher.

James, who spent the past four years as a substitute with the SuperSonics, will be 30 in November. Perhaps the most impressive thing about James is his size, something the Knicks have sorely lacked since trading Nazr Mohammed last February. James is 7-1, 272 pounds, has a knack for blocking shots, can run the floor and has a soft touch around the basket.

But a career reserve, he has never had the chance to play more than about 16 minutes a game, which is why he wanted to join the Knicks.

LOS ANGELES -- Cuttino Mobley, one of the NBA's most accurate outside shooters, will play for the Los Angeles Clippers next season, his agent said Thursday.

"An agreement has been reached," Andy Miller said from his office in Tenafly, N.J.

Miller wouldn't divulge terms, but it's believed the parties agreed to a five-year deal worth around $42 million. Contracts cannot be signed until an NBA moratorium ends July 22.

The 29-year-old Mobley, an unrestricted free agent, has averaged 17.1 points in seven NBA seasons. He played for the Houston Rockets for six years before being traded to the Orlando Magic last summer. He was traded again in January, to the Sacramento Kings for Doug Christie.

Mobley, a 6-foot-4 left-handed guard, averaged 17.2 points, 3.5 rebounds and 2.8 assists for the Magic and Kings before opting out of a contract that would have paid him $6.4 million next season.

The Clippers have been one of the NBA's least successful franchises over the years, failing to make the playoffs since 1997 and advancing to the postseason only three times since moving from San Diego to Los Angeles in 1984. They lost in the first round each time.

But Miller said Mobley believes things are going to change.

"There wasn't one determining factor, there were a number of them," Miller said regarding Mobley's decision. "Cuttino and I were very impressed with the consistency and aggressiveness the Clippers showed toward us and their desire to win.

"Winning is the absolute most important thing to Cuttino. With coach [Mike] Dunleavy managing the team, Cuttino feels very confident that there not only is a very strong commitment to win but a direction as well," he said.

Mobley figures to start in the backcourt with Shaun Livingston. That would move Corey Maggette from shooting guard to his natural position of small forward to start up front with Elton Brand and Chris Kaman.

"I feel it's a perfect fit," Miller said. "We're very excited about the opportunity."

The Clippers finished last in the NBA in 3-point shots tried and made last season. Mobley ranked third in the league in 3-point accuracy, shooting 150-of-342 (43.9 percent) from beyond the arc.

Miller said the Clippers beat out several teams for Mobley's services.

"There was a lot of interest and a lot of dialogue," Miller said. "In making this decision, this shows how much he values the Clippers' situation."

Miller also said Mobley found Los Angeles "an attractive place to play."

Forward Bobby Simmons, voted the NBA's most improved player last season, when he averaged 16.4 points for the Clippers, agreed to a five-year, $47 million contract with the Milwaukee Bucks last week.

Mobley seems a better fit for the Clippers and will apparently come a little cheaper.

Mobley was the 42nd overall selection of the Rockets in the 1998 NBA draft after playing at Rhode Island, where he averaged 14.3 points in 93 career games.

Antonio Daniels
Get to the point
Jul 15 - First Nate McMillan leaves. Then Jerome James. Now Antonio Daniels? According to the Seattle Times, the sought-after free agent point guard sees it heading that way.
"Seattle continues to say something to the effect like when and if you get a serious offer, then come back to us and tell us what it is," Daniels said. "Well, that makes me feel very unappreciated. ... You never want to close any door, but I'm not the one closing the door." The Blazers, Lakers and Wizards have all reached out to Daniels, while the Jazz are expected to pay him a visit this weekend. His agent, Tony Dutt, has indicated that two teams have offered his client the full mid-level exception and at least one team has offered a five-year deal, the Times reports.

"It would be nice to start, but that's not the most important thing to me," Daniels said. "I need to be in a situation where I feel comfortable. Where I feel like they believe in me as a player and believe in my skills as a person. Somewhere my wife is comfortable. I thought that place was Seattle, but I'm finding out more and more that maybe it's not."

Damon Stoudamire
Here he comes to save the day?
Jul 15 - Tracy McGrady is calling for Damon Stoudamire's help, the Houston Chronicle reports, saying the Portland point guard would fit well with the Rockets. The two played together in Toronto for part of McGrady's rookie season.
"He was Mighty Mouse then," McGrady said. "He's toward the end of his career where he just wants to win. It's not about being the man."

McGrady would also like to see Stromile Swift in Houston red. "He has unbelievable talent, and he's young," McGrady said. "That's a guy I can grow with. With his athleticism and power out there at the four position and his ability to play the five, it creates mismatch problems on the opposing end."

Eddie Curry
High on the Hawks
Jul 15 - Eddy Curry is enjoying his visit in Atlanta and warming up to the idea of playing for the Hawks, reports the Chicago Sun-Times.
"I'm extremely excited about this whole situation and glad the Hawks have taken an interest in me," he said. "I realize there might be a chance I might not be in Chicago next year. ... I'm definitely open to coming to the Hawks."

Before the visit, however, Curry was still torn. "My heart never changed," he said in the Chicago Tribune. "Chicago always will be the place I want to be. Right now it's just business."

Larry Brown
Knicks knocking on Larry's door
Jul 20 - New York finally has a shot at Larry Brown after the coach and the Pistons officially parted ways. And Knicks prez Isiah Thomas is ready to make his move as early as tomorrow with a $60 million offer, reports the New York Daily News. "When am I calling him?" Thomas said in the Daily News. "As soon as I finish my anniversary dinner with my wife. ... I will be on his doorstep as soon as possible."
Meanwhile, Brown maintains he is unsure about his next step. "I don't see myself coaching again next year. But you never know," he said.

So where does that leave Herb Williams? In the past tense, perhaps. Thomas recently slipped when speaking of Williams. "He did a fine job when he was here," he said, then backtracked.

Donyell Marshall
Cleveland's Marshall
Jul 20 - According to the Plain Dealer, Donyell Marshall agreed Tuesday to a four-year deal worth between $20 million and $25 million with the Cavaliers.
"Coming to Cleveland is the right place at the right time because they're a team on an upward swing with other free agents and the re-signing of Ilgauskas," said Marshall's agent, Andy Miller. "Donyell's never had an opportunity to win before and he can be a contributing piece."

"The chance to play with LeBron was pivotal in Donyell's decision," Miller said. "LeBron was proactive in this process and that helped Donyell in [with] the decision."

Kyle Krover
20 - The Philadelphia Daily News reports that the Sixers and Kyle Korver have agreed to a six-year deal worth about $27 million. He cannot officially sign until July 22.

Willie Green
Sixers give Green green
Jul 20 - The Sixers have re-signed free agent point guard Willie Green to a six-year deal worth about $20 million, the Philadelphia Daily News reports. The Utah Jazz were also reportedly interested in Green. The deal does not become official until July 22.

Antonio Daniels
Wizards get to the point
Jul 20 - Another Sonic is switching teams. Antonio Daniels has reached a verbal agreement with the Washington Wizards on a five-year contract worth an estimated $30 million, reports ESPN.com's Marc Stein. The guard cannot officially sign until July 22.
The Lakers, Blazers and Jazz were also reportedly interested.

Keyon Dooling
Drooling for Dooling
Jul 20 - Free agent Keyon Dooling will visit the Nets this weekend, reports the New York Daily News.
Dooling also said in the Miami Herald that "six or seven" teams have expressed interest in his point guard skills. While the Heat have not made him an offer, Dooling says he hopes to be back but understands that may not happen with Shaquille O'Neal's contract being the team's top priority.

"If an offer comes along that me and my family thinks is good we're going to have to take it," said Dooling, who has also visited the Magic.

Shareef Abdur-Rahim
Net gain
Jul 19 - According to the New York Daily News, Shareef Abdur-Rahim has agreed to become a Net for the mid-level exception worth roughly $5 million. However, the Nets are still working on a sign-and-trade with Portland that would send their $4.9 million trade exception and a future first-round pick to the Blazers. The deal would allow Abdur-Rahim to get an extra year on his contract and $10 million more than what he can get through the mid-level.
Abdur-Rahim has also reportedly drawn interest from the Kings, Spurs, Heat, Wizards,

cavs are gonna be overrated, larry hughes is good but he doesn't push them over the top, as far as making the playoffs. you gotta remember..hughes hasn't played more than 67 games since 01-02, so who says he will be healthy, and shot 28.2 from 3 point land. That's not good for a guard. Remember Cleveland is looking for an athletic SHOOTER, not another slasher, they already have that in lebron. That's why they were going after Micheal ReDD, cause he is a very good shooter, 39.4 from 3pt. and 44.1 over-all. they gonna win some games but when it comes down to it they're gonna need soke shooters, because people will just clog the lane and stop everyone except for Lebron from driving

second, they looking to sign Walker for around the MLE, So how's he not worth the money? the MLE is 5 Mil. the most he's gonna get is like 6-7.5, and that's still have of Pierce's yearly salary. he shot 32.2 form 3 point land (better than hughes) and grabbed 9 boards a game (for someone who can't really jump to good) and averaged 19.0 a game, you telling me there's another person who's gonna get the MLE that has better stats? don't think so. He's not a Max contract player, but he's certainly worth the MLE

Pierce being traded is real possibilty, but don't count on it to happen, they won't do it unless they can get equal value. there's not much better all round 2 guards in the league than pierce. THERe are some 2 guards who can score better than him, but over all pierce rebounds and plays D better than most. unless they get equal value he ain't going anywhere. Davis is tradable because he came off a solid year and is still is affordable as fas as his contract goes. the young kids will be coming up but they gonna need some more time to grow, celtics willbe back in the playoffs, and if they resign Walker they will be better thqna cleveland.

webster is an NBA ready strong guard. damon stoudamire is gonna be gone, so sebastian telfair can run that point. darius miles, zach randolph, theo ratliff round out that starting lineup as of now, and they have a fairly young core of bench players, including now juan dixon.

they will surely be a fun team to watch, but does anyone think nate mcmillan can bring the team together?? i hope so, i like him as a coach and did as a player, but this is the Jailblazers we're talkin about

^i don't think the blazers will be able to coexist and be a team.... they tried to trade zach most of last year and nobody wanted him because he was such a fucking asshole.... they have a lot of trouble makers who have no respect for those around them much less a coach so i think they will under achieve

Reported 5 Team Trade

MIAMI -- Antoine Walker, Jason Williams and James Posey could soon be coming to the Miami Heat in a proposed five-team trade that was nearing completion Tuesday, according to a lawyer and league official both familiar with terms of the complicated deal.

"Unless something strange happens, it's going to happen," said the lawyer, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Miami -- which signed Shaquille O'Neal to a $100 million, five-year deal earlier Tuesday -- would obtain Walker in a sign-and-trade from the Boston Celtics, then add Williams, Posey and rookie Andre Emmett from the Memphis Grizzlies in exchange for veteran swingman Eddie Jones.

The trade -- which has been submitted to the league for approval -- was first reported by The Miami Herald. League and team officials generally do not openly discuss proposed trades until they become finalized.

Walker, Williams and Jones are the headliners in the proposed deal, one that also includes the aftereffects of a three-team deal agreed to earlier Tuesday by Sacramento, Memphis and Utah.

As part of the Walker deal, Boston would obtain Qyntel Woods, the rights to Spanish center Albert Miralles and the Heat's $1.9 million trade exception.

Walker, a three-time All-Star who averaged 19.1 points and nine rebounds last season for the Atlanta Hawks and Boston Celtics, would be a welcome addition to the Heat, said forward Udonis Haslem -- who formally signed his $30.7 million, five-year deal Tuesday.

"We're two different players and we can bring two different things to the table," Haslem said. "If we put that together, we should have a pretty good tandem."

The Celtics would get Borchardt from Memphis; Borchardt was part of Tuesday's earlier trade in which Sacramento acquired guard Bonzi Wells from Memphis for guard Bobby Jackson and center Greg Ostertag.

Memphis was then expected to send Ostertag to the Utah Jazz for guard Raul Lopez, forward Kirk Snyder and Borchardt. Snyder would be sent to New Orleans, along with the Heat's Rasual Butler, and Borchardt would head to Boston.

It's a deal that represents a major shakeup for Miami, which reached Game 7 of the Eastern Conference finals this past season -- even though O'Neal and Dwyane Wade were both hurt at the time.

Jones, a career 16.4-point-per-game scorer, averaged 12.7 in the regular season and 13.7 in the playoffs as Miami's third option. Williams averaged 10.1 points and 5.6 assists for the Grizzlies last season.

"He's one of the best playmakers in the game," Haslem said of Williams.

Posey was limited to 50 games this past season because of injuries, and only 18 starts. He averaged 8.1 points and 4.4 rebounds.

but both were better at the time collectively, than walker and jwill are together now. Celtics did free up some cap space, plus they got 5.5 mil trade exception for a future trade, plus they got cash considerations from miami to cover 2 of the players salaries that they got. next summer celtics will land 2 good free agents

yea if this goes through the team will be incredibly ridiculous, it will just be a matter of chemistry but they r automatic title favorites.

i also believe the lineup would be

JWill
Wade
Walker
Haslem
Shaq

not posey starting, hes a spark plug off the bench, great defensive stopper, etc.

Kobe is Good but he isn't God.

As for the Miami deal

In my opinion Walker is the most overrated player in the NBA. Im not even hating either, i've actually never seen him play well.....even when he was in Dallas he was ehhhhh. Not "Mr.All Star" as everyone says he is. He can score.....a bit. But he turns the ball over too damn much, makes defensive mistakes that cost us the game ( ) . And sometimes he just takes the UGLYIST SHOTS i've ever seen. I don't know how well he can play team ball with Shaq and Wade but we will see...

As for J Will, ...........well...........can him and Wade be friends? lol. Lets pray for that.

^ i gues shaq is fat too? you can be big but it doesn't mean you're fat....as for the most over ratted player in the NBA is comes down to a few players but not walker. Yao ming, check his stats, dude is like 8 inches taller than Walker, but walker has better career averages in Rebounding, scoring and assists. i know Walker isn't the greatest player, trust i been watching him for years. in fact Walker has better assist than MOST PF's. his rebounding is on par with other comparible PF's as well, it's his shooting precentage and block's that are down. His steals are above PF averages as well

as long as they dont mess with shaq, i really think the personalities can fit with each other for this team. it'll be interesting to see, and especially with the coaching conflict, pat riley might peace out stan van gundy and take the job. but walker has come off the bench before, and hes not as bad of a team player as some apply. i agree hes an incredibly overrated fat fuck, but if he can come in and grab 7 boards and body up smaller defenders for 25-30 min a night while dropping the open 3, thats all he needs to do.

The team that won the Michael Finley Sweepstakes is the same team that just won an NBA championship.

Finley told ESPN.com on Wednesday that he has chosen to sign with the San Antonio Spurs, spurning a richer offer from the Miami Heat and the lure of an emotional return to the Phoenix Suns to reunite with close friend Steve Nash.

who's place would they take in the post season, form the teams that were in it last year? Only feasible teams they MIGHT be able to take a spot form would be memphis or seattle.all the other teams are a lock. Don't expect to count out the timberwolves either to make a run

I noticed that point when I was making picks for the playoff seeding on another forum. But I see it like this next year.

1. San Antonio
2. Sacramento
3. Houston
4. Phoenix
5. Minnesota
6. Denver
7. Dallas
8. Clippers

Hell, I might even make a stretch and say the Clippers will take the 7th spot while the Sonics take the 8th spot. Honestly, I think Dallas will have a horrible year and will be the Timberwolves of last year, possibly not making the playoffs.

But back to the Clippers, look at this lineup!

PG - Sam Cassell
SG- Cuttino Mobley
SF - Corey Maggette
PF - Elton Brand
C - Chris Kaman

i think Sac has a chance at a 7 or 8th playoff spot, but I dont love their team this year personally... Bonzi Wells is the single WORST player to have on a team. He's now proven it for 2 different teams, and i doubt the Kings will want to take his shit, especially being a starter on the team. Shareef i have hope in, but is Shareef and Bonzi Wells an upgrade over Bobby Jackson, Doug Christie/Cuttino Mobley, Chris Webber???... no its not to me... they had their chance, a very good chance, to win a few years ago, but i think its past them. They havent upgraded with Bonzi and Shareef compared what they did have.... my opinion
