View Full Version : 10 must have albums
Tupac 03-08-2003, 03:48 PM This topic is on albums that every person who likes hip hop should have. So... (This is in no order)
2pac "Me Against The World"- Some might argue MAKAVELI or ALL EYEZ ON ME was better. But when you think about it, which album reflected the truth about the REAL Tupac? This album of coarse. ME AGAINST THE WORLD is incredible in every aspect. From its portrayle of Pac's struggle, to his many sides..
Nas "Illmatic"- Nas is a genius when it comes to lyrics. He is like a mathematician with his rhymes. And on this album his lyrics strikes harder than any record in history. From "NY State of Mind" to "It Aint Hard to Tell"... every song is bumpin.
Wu-Tang Clan "Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)"- This album takes a little longer to draw you in. But once you realize this record, it won't leave your CD player. It is the grimiest wordplay you will ever hear, and with its amazing movie samples and incredible lyrics (and crazy beats too) any body love it.
Dr. Dre "The Chronic"- Dr. Dre created a miracle with this album. He created and defined G-Funk. You will never hear a more important album in you life. Though I am not saying this is the best album in the world, it is one that spawned the release of many other great albums.
Outkast "Aquemini"- The south was not important until Outkast came up. And this was Outkast's best album by far. Andre and Big Boi are geniuses lyric wise, and as producers.
Snoop Dogg "Doggystyle"- This is one of those albums you can never get tired of. Each song on here is original and fun (sometimes dark). This alone makes Snoop Dogg one of the best rappers in history.
Jay-Z "Reasonable Doubt"- The struggle is what made this album, it was not even Jay-Z. The rapper we know now as "Big Pimpin" and "Excuse Me Miss" was on the grind. And with this album Jay made possibly the best record of all time.
The Notorious BIG "Ready To Die"- If this recorded never existed hip hop would be alot different today. Their would be no Jay-Z, no 50 Cent, no Big Pun even Eminem would have a different style. BIG took everything Snoop did for the west coast, rearranged the style and made it an east coast thing. You have to give it to him for that.
Mos Def "Black On Both Sides"- Political, passionate and perfect. Mos Def revolutionized alternate hip hop (though he doesn't like calling his music that). This is the REAL blueprint.
Eminem "Marshall Mathers LP"- As far as cencorship, lyricism/wordplay and producing goes.. Eminem is the king right now. He is the most important rapper at this moment in 2003, and even people who don't like his music need to thank him for all he's done.

T1 Req 03-31-2003, 02:33 PM I'm about to prove that I don't know shit about hip hop:
Eminem "The Marshall Mathers LP"
Start to end, this album is just crazy lol. It's one of the only albums I've got where I can honestly say I don't want to skip any tracks listening to it (although the Ken Kaniff skit is a close call...)
Jay-Z "The Blueprint"
I rarely skip on this either. Maybe the party songs which pad out the middle, and I like to stop track 13 before the bonuses come in, but only because they don't really fit the theme of the rest of the album.
"Rumour has it The Blueprint classic / Couldn't even be stopped by Bin Laden / So September 11th marks the era forever of a revolutionary Jay Guevero / Now it's a whole museum of Hov' MCers / Everybody dupin' the flow, you see 'em / Everybody loopin' up soul / It's like they tryin' to make "The Blueprint 2" before Hov"
Nas "Illmatic"
Another rare-skipper. The multi-rhyme schemes in this album pretty much set up the way everyone would be rapping for the next ten years.
Canibus "Mic Club: The Curriculum"
Yeah, it's new. But Bis's style finally has the production it deserves. Shame there were a couple of weak guest appearances...then again the Kool G Rap track was a diamond...natch :D
Wu-Tang Clan "Forever"
Ooh, it's a bit genre-defining...really, it's the feel of this album; sort of dark and hard to pin down to a specific personality.
Dr. Dre "The Chronic"
The home of "Nuthin But A G Thang"; every track a banger and a triumph for Dre et al, production and rhyme-wise.
Jurassic 5 "Power In Numbers"
I'm not a massive fan of the "old school sound", but there's something about this that appeals to the very core of my body...maybe they shoot themselves in the foot by saying they want to do something different with rap and then getting Percy P on a track threatening to "splatter your brain, leave scattered remains of matter and stains..." but what the hell, it's all good fun. Plus "What's Golden" is a bee-yooty.
Kool G Rap "4, 5, 6"
The man himself claims this was his worst album...odd, that, as it's probably his most original-sounding one. Stuff like "It's A Shame" and "For Tha Brothaz"; he wishes he could still do stuff like that lol.
Redman "Whut? Thee Album"
At least as funky and laid back as Dre's "Chronic" from the same year...also refreshing, with gangsta rap just really blowing up, to hear songs like "So Ruff"
Non Phixion "The Future Is Now"
Yikes, the third album I mentioned from the last year lmao. These guys are vicious though...if this album had just the two "CIA" songs on it I'd buy it for full price
