"""Often the truth is far more fantastic than fiction. So forget all those legends about St. Boniface and Luther and the Christmas tree for a moment. Smile indulgently when someone tells you that Father Christmas was created by a Coco cola advertising campaign in 1931! For here is a wondrous story, which confirms what you already knew as a child: Father Christmas really does exist! And he is a spirit of extreme antiquity!

Humanity has had a symbiotic relationship with plants for as long as we’ve been around on Mother Earth. Trees and plants have not only given us food, tools, fibre and fire to sustain our lives, but they have also allowed us to experience the nature of God itself through a sacred teacher plant called Fly Agaric (Amanita muscaria), the well known red mushroom with white spots.

This mushroom is found growing all over the world in symbiosis with Pine (& other coniferous trees), Birch, and sometimes Oak. Ecologists are just beginning to re-discover that fungi are fundamental to the success and health of every terrestrial ecosystem, and essential to the sustainability of biodiversity.

Amanita muscaria may well be partly responsible for the success of Conifers and Birch to re-colonise the land after the Ice Age.
The origin of putting presents under the Christmas tree comes from the fact that it is under the tree where the great gift of this unique sacred plant can be found. In shamanic cultures, it was taken communally as a holy sacrament in the heart of winter (death) to mark the return of the Sun and life through personal communion with Divinity (hence the later Christian tradition of hanging wafers –“the bread of life” and later cookies on the tree)...."""

also, i've read that from dec. 20 or so to dec. 24, the sun is at it's furthest point away from earth, and on december 25th, starts making it's way back closer(or us to it, w./e) so in a sense, it is the 're-birth' of the sun...

so, what's the thought to be the true birthdate by many scholars??
this article can help out there...

"""A confirmation of this time is in the book of Revelation. Historian Ernest L. Martin consulted NASA lunar-phase tables and found the image of the heavens in Revelation 12 showed where the sun and the moon were, relative to Virgo, at the time Jesus was born, pin-pointing sunset of September 11th of 3 BC. It seems the moon moves so quickly it is "beneath the feet" of Virgo only a few hours every month. Moreover, the moon comes within two lunar diameters of Virgo's feet at the time of a new moon but once in 30 years.
The only such occurance any time near the birth of Jesus was on September 11th, 3 BC.

Most previous attempts at determining the birth time were based upon astrology and dating the Star of Bethlehem. No one considered 3 BC because that year had erroneously been assumed to follow Herod's death. However, Dr. Martin has proven that Herod did not die in 4 BC, but in 1 BC. Scholars are now generally accepting the new chronology for Herod, and this in turn has allowed the confirmation of the New Testament date for the
birth of Jesus. Unfortunately, many churches continue to promote the critics' errors and paganized traditions about the Nativity."""

Well... I think (Read it ages ago) that if by celebrating Christmas you want to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, then it should be something like 7th of April or something.

But yea, the date 25th December was originally a holy day for those of the Pagan religion. To ease the transition into Christianity, the Romans (again, I think... 90% certain) adopted the date, and it hasn't changed since.
