Ok. Now what I want to know is.....Am I the only one who is not feeling the new age Hip hop beats?
To me they just don't appeal, they seem way tooo generic, too overdone, and just seem to sound sooooo commercial or Poppy sometimes. They just don't have the same feel as the older beats did.
Rappers like Jada Kiss, papoose, D block ect ect. I feel are all quality
rappers for the 00's. But I when i hear the beat Im not into the song as much as I would be If they were ryming over a raw 36 chamber type beat.
I honestly miss the 90's beats to death. No matter what coast it was from back then, they had the ill beats, whether it was the g-funk west coast beats with cube and dre ect. or the gritty new york beats with nas and wu tang.

Anybody else feelin the same? I would love to hear some opinions on this.

nice avatar Lmao...

yea i agree to a degree. in general i dislike 9/10 of new age hip hop beats. however i think the top producers nowadays can be great. when a new producer shines now they are top notch...

to me there were 9/10 GOOD beats back in the early to mid 90's and even in the 80's, but there obviously were parts missing from production that we can now make today....

overall i think the main difference is that there are less and less quality consistent producers in the game. yea timbaland, alchemist, and kanye can run a lot of shit in mainstream and make manye hot beats, but they get repititive and and are not my type. i can listen to 9th wonder and premo all day even nowadays, where as you could say that about MANY producers back when.. nowadays its like a buncha good producers but they are not consistent with everything, they got some hit beats then others blow.

I cant listen to many artist I like.90s was at its best. Mostly westcoast shit then. now I just listen to down south shit, and not casue Im from tha south, its because I think its the best shit out. i forgot to mention that i think production helps some real south artists shine... like Three Six Mafia i think are real and their production is dope... obviously im not talking about J-Kwon and Lil Jon and Ying Yang, but i mean Scarface, Three Six, and them got some real good production which if you feel the beats can be the best out

I know this sounds really close-minded, but I think computer software = the death of good hip hop beats. Producers are losing the essence of what hip hop was in the first place. I'd prefer a setup as basic as a sampler and keyboard hooked to an MPC instead of fruityloops, reason, or protools.

Gokill Urselv, you say you don't like the majority of hip hop beats today, and isn't it funny that most producers have switched to the computer these days to keep up with technology? That aint no coincidence. And from my experience with computer programs, there's not much you can do with hip hop beats; your sound is really limited. And you do inevitably get that "poppy" sound you mentioned.

And by the way, I strongly disagree with those who frown upon sampling, or think it requires no skill...strongly disagree... (a little off topic)

I really like the WuTang beats too, and I think it's because RZA would often produce the albums in their entirety, so the whole thing would be consistent and feel more like a piece of art. You know, like Dangermouse on DangerDoom, or the Bomb Squad on Public Enemy records.

PS - has anyone noticed that all Lil Jon beats sound exactly the same?

yeaaaaaaa i agree

thats why i mostly dont listen to mainstream shit anymore, 99% of it is horseshit

there are some really good producers in underground, which are amazing beats. if it werent for some of these producers in underground i dotn think i would be listenin to rap that much at all. these producers include: steve stoupe, 7L, necro, celph titled just to name a few
i try to stay away from mainstream shit, most of the beats and mc's arent that great anymore. theres a FEW good mc's in mainstream, nas is one of them, but i can just listen to his rhymes and not care about the beat, cause hes a monster

The majority of mainstream Hip-Hop beats sound poppy because the majority of mainstream Hip-Hop fans like listening to catchy club hits, because of this the beats continue to get more basic and because the listener is only concern with the basic head nodding beat and the simple hook, the rhyming continues to get more simple, as most mainstream rap fans don't pay attention to the verse.

A good example of this would be 50 Cent most of his music consists of a basic catchy beat a basic hook and his rhyming scheme is very simple.

00's Hip Hop beats stink to high heaven. Give me some 90's grimy NYC beat over that any day.

There is no innovation anymore. It all sounds the same.

I'm not even sure if they sample beats anymore? Can someone answer this? Part of the fun in Hip Hop is finding out what the OG sample was and tracking down and listening to it.

There was a discussion on another forum about how there needs to be more instrumental albums from the mid-90s cuz the beats were so good and in some cases the lyrical skills were not up there with the beats.

I don't always agree that mid 90s artists were lacking in skills but the beats were amazing.

It's funny how beats evolved in the 90s after sampling was ruled as theft. Listen to P.E. - It Takes a Nation (especially Caught, can I get a Witness about the whole issue of sampling) and how different that was to early 90's mellow sound.

The only Producer Im feeling right now is Muggs. The beats on the new album with him and GZA sounded they were from 95'.

With modern beats its sometimes a bit hit and miss, it's not all that consistent.

I prefer it when one producer makes all the beats for an album e.g dangerdoom, grandmasters, OBFCL, dr albums,

I think sampling one of the best aspects of hip hop, it enables producers to incorporate loads of different styles of hip hop. It helps creativity rather than hinders it in my opinion. Different producers will have a different feeling as to where they can go with the sample and come out with a totally different beat to another.

Good thread.
