View Full Version : UK artists obsession with Vinyl?
Multiplaxed, 01-30-2006, 12:32 PM I was discussing this with someone on MSN earlier.
Maybe i'm missing something here but why do most UK artists feel that all they need to make is a Vinyl to be successful? Yes, it's useful for clubs, radio's etc but there are better ways to get your material out before putting it out on vinyl.
I specifically mentioned UK because i don't know about the US.
HoBGoBLiN 01-30-2006, 12:40 PM The answers in the question, vinyl finds its way into the hands of DJ's and in turn (hopefully) hip hop spots and radio slots... Mixtapes have no official release so you gotta move em yourself n if you have no gigs that aint easy and you're probly gunna make a loss... Vinyl aint too much to press and it's easier to distibrute, it's just a cheaper more efficient way of getting yourself known.
Once people start hearin your tunes bein played on the radio or at a club they're more likely to come lookin for the artist rather than the artist lookin for the consumer. I mean how many UK artists mixtapes just go on the web for free? They know that once their mixtape is on somebody else's hard drive it's goin to every cunt on his msn list and so on and so forth. Guess vinyl is just a way of gaining interest from people in higher places rather than non-spending fans browsing the internet.
Multiplaxed, 01-30-2006, 12:42 PM 'tis true but people like Conflix and Sonnyjim have made it big through the net first, then gone on to do side gigs and THEN released vinyls.
HoBGoBLiN 01-30-2006, 12:47 PM Dunno then, maybe thats for radio purposes... Jibbarish was already pretty well known when he released "Drop Bombz" on 12", come to think of it that was off his EP as well... That did pay off though cos he spat the whole thing over the instrumental on 1xtra.
Maybe it's just so they got a little something in the shops, only thing Antiheroes have ever officially released was the ETI Records 12", n I know a guy from Derby who stumbled across that vinyl in a Nottingham side street vinyl store
YeshuaBenJoseph 01-31-2006, 10:23 PM my immediate response is to tell you buy a fucking record player. vinyl sounds, and looks better.
Pariah Liberal 01-31-2006, 11:29 PM im not sure but now that you say that your right they do seem to do that

Are you serious? This is the year 2006 not 1866.
HoBGoBLiN 02-01-2006, 11:20 AM Nothing wrong with havin a record player though, I've got Shook Ones pt1 on vinyl, most people have never heard it.. They're more collectors items, plus you might wanna use em for scratchin or samplin. Just nice to have some in your collection

nah man, vinyls are pure hip hop... mp3 and cds and whatnot have no worth in comparison... bits of information, while a record is something vintage, something with more value
feral 02-02-2006, 05:34 AM Yeah, vinyls are about sounds. Sounds. Plus you wont hear half of the tracks released on vinyl from a "download".
Vinyls are hard to come by round here though. There's only like one vinyl shop, "Slippy's Vinyl", and they're mainly concerned with dnb and garage.
I only saw the way of the vinyl after my step bro came across hundreds of tracks i'd never heard. Now i've seen the light.
feral 02-02-2006, 05:35 AM Plus if you're into producing and beatmaking you can sample off vinyls. Can't do that on mp3.
funk_M 02-23-2006, 08:33 AM Vinyl sounds so much better than mp3s and cds, and they usually are cheaper than cds (depending on how rare they are). Vinyls have a warmer sounding bass, and make you feel more involved in the music. I never used to think it was true, but three of my housemates (at a student house of 4 in leicester) all have record players, and you can feel the difference.
It convonced me enough to buy Easy Star All-Stars- Dub SIde of the moon on Vinyl....and it sounds great, especially when you have a j in your hand.
feral 02-24-2006, 04:59 AM Plus vinyls are collectables. They only rattle off so many vinyls, once their sold that's it unless they get a really high demand for them. You can find some really rare vinyls for over a hundred quid some places.
CRUGER 02-24-2006, 02:51 PM but i can never b arsed to keep changing the record, u can jus leave cds, comps, ipods etc on.. i do have decks tho and i a vinnel collection, i hardly ever seem to use em now tho.
