View Full Version : Hip Hop music is not a culture
golden_era 02-18-2006, 10:56 AM Why do people keep calling it that.
How can something which is 30 years old be a culture. It cannot be compared civilisations and customs which people have past down for 1000s of years.
At best its a sub-culture.
Encore 02-18-2006, 10:58 AM To me it's music. That's all, just like Jazz is or soul is.
To some it may be a way of life, or a sub-culture, but to me it's a genre of music.
Pfff... so tired of this bullshit.
Aphraedite 02-18-2006, 11:09 AM Culture is a people's way of life... so to an extent, I see hip-hop as PART of a culture... I can't see knocking it because it's not an ANCIENT one... Ah, I dunno... don't feel like debating this morning... :(
golden_era 02-18-2006, 11:11 AM To some it may be a way of life.
I agree with you.
Even if its a way of life for some people it does not make it a culture.
golden_era 02-18-2006, 11:14 AM Culture is a people's way of life... so to an extent, I see hip-hop as PART of a culture...(
Yes, therefore its a sub-culture.
Wait! New theory!
Hip hop doesn't exist!! It's all in our imagination!

But how do you define a culture? In the Longmans dictionary of contemporary english, It defines the word culture in to many different definitions: group, art, society, crops & science. The art part says: Activities that are related to art, music, literature etc.
So you could say that Hip Hop/Rap is a culture
Pfff... so tired of this bullshit
Go take a nap then
Ced-12 02-18-2006, 07:58 PM Take a rest and reflect on this one before you answer....
:::D.A.::: 02-18-2006, 08:04 PM Shut up nigga. It is a culture and I'm part of it.
Ced-12 02-18-2006, 08:18 PM Alright, i thought about it, had time to reflect on it. Hip Hop is part of a culture because of the connection it has to the people who created it.
Hip Hop is older than yall think, nothin's changed except the lyrics.....music is music. Jazz, Classical, Blues, Hip Hop, Funk....same sounds, just different players, different age and time.
We've been doin hip hop since back then, so it is culture for sure, a way of life and i live it every second!
Khameli-N 02-18-2006, 11:48 PM ^^^word...just cos hip hop only been around for 30 years dont mean it aint a culture...i mean like the incas...they didnt sit there wit a calendar counting the days to wen they could b 'officially' called a culture...thats stupid...a culture is a certain way of life...i argue that hip hop indeed is a culture
Plug Zero 02-19-2006, 12:12 AM I just get angry when people try to say there's a difference between hip hop and rap. They say that rap is something you do, and hip hop is a way of life.
Fuck that, that's just lame.

Jazza, Blues, Funk & Classical are not Hip Hop music. And if Hip Hop is part of a culture it implies its a sub culture.
I doubt any serious historian views it as a culture.
-Maple- 02-19-2006, 02:17 PM i think hiphop is a culture.
and that rap is a form of it
Ced-12 02-19-2006, 02:39 PM Read it homie...i said music is music...hip hop uses the same sounds as these different genre's. Cymbals, bass, horns, kick drums, hi hats, snare drums, etc, etc.
I also said that hip hop is "PART OF A CULTURE" because of the connection it has to the people who created these sounds that we play. The people before us made it possible for us to use the very same sounds that they used.
Any real historian who is un-bias will tell you that no matter what generation you come from, all forms of music is part of a culture. It don't matter what genre of music it is.
If you you trace ya family history back say 60 years or so, you might be surprised to find out that maybe even somebody from your fam once played music themselves, it could of been Blues, Jazz or anything. That's culture!!!!
I didn't say Jazz, Blues, Funk or classical was hip hop...read it again homie.

I misunderstood what you said about Jazz etc.
But music is part of culture, but not a stand alone culture IMO. That was my point. Therefore Hip Hop music has its own sub-culture within American culture.
Ced-12 02-19-2006, 08:54 PM That's what's up....glad we could mutually agree! We should be runnin congress..ha,ha
Ced-12
detroitlildanca 02-19-2006, 09:31 PM Hmmm..that makes a person think to themselves about the 'american culture' and how you palce it their as a sub-culture. You make it sound like a negative gesture then anything. To me if your connected to hiphop then hiphop is connected to you. Its not placed into anything sub or what not. If its who you are and what makes you believe in something then its mutually connected together with the background and everything in it, or else you woulden't love it in the first place. It just bugs me how ppl seem to catagorys everything.
PENIS 02-19-2006, 11:09 PM rap/hiphop was never a culture and the way it's going will never make it a culture to be proud of.... rap hiphop been around for less than 30 years, and people already call it culture!!! Thats just retarded
Varial 02-20-2006, 05:21 AM u a dumb fuck.. u know that right?
RIPPER 02-20-2006, 05:34 AM ^^^Hes a dumb fuck? And you just said "u a dumb fuck"
Ok now my thoughts on this whole situation is this...Think about what a culture is? Its a society that usally lives togather, practices the same belifes, shares art, conversation, and ways of life.
Hip-hop is music am I right? Music is art am I right?
Now how can "Art" be a culture? Art is nothing more than part of a culture...To say that HIP HOP is a culture in its self is to say that EVERYSINGLE GENRE OF MUSIC is a diffrent culture. Which is ubsurd! Music is art and art is a part of culture.
Therefore Hip-Hop is not a culture in its self, and if you belive it is you are living in a very sad paradaux.
^^ And you just said "togather".
RIPPER 02-20-2006, 05:42 AM Its not my fault that at 4 in the morning Im very fond of Budwiser Select...
