RIPPER 03-07-2006, 06:30 AM I sit at home and do these problems so I thought I would share with this site just to see how logical people think on here. Ill post the answer after a few days and then Ill post another question.
Question
The simplest conceivale situation in which one human being may communicate with another is one in which structurally complementary communicants have been conditioned to associate the same words with the same things.
The sentence that would best complete this thought is:
A]Therefore, dictionaries are of little value to foreigners.
B]Therefore, man cannot communicate effectively with animals.
C]Therefore, communication is a matter of relation.
D]Therefore, communication is simplest following a common experience.
E]Therefore, communication is dependent on complementary structures.

I can see why it could be D.
But I chose A basically because.... a Peace sign in U.S means Peace in Japan. If you motion to drink something, its commonly understood that you want something to drink.

If you're relating the same words with the same things then the language would have to be the same, ruling out A
An animal isn't a human being, so B is out of the window
Communication is NOT a matter of relation, if this was true there would be no such thing as a disagreement. So I'm saying it isn't C
Communication isn't dependent on anything other than the ability to think to speak and to listen, there are many different forms of communication, so I rule out E
Probably the main reason I voted for d though was the use of the word "Simplest", most the others suggest that communication wouldn't be possible without the reasons listed.

For instance, If I work on a farm, feeding animals, and I am at work, food has a completely different meaning based upon the structure of the enviroment we are in. If I yell food I would most likely be talking about food for the animals, which would be understood due to the structure. If I stand outside of a restraunt and yell food you would know I was hungry due to the structure of the enviroment at that point.

In this type of question its easy to over think stuff.
A and B are irrelevant, and C and E are not as effective as D because they are just restatements of the thought, rather than a clarification.
