Rapper Snoop Dogg Arrested After London Heathrow Airport Brawl
April 27 (Bloomberg) -- Hip hop musician Snoop Dogg was among six people arrested yesterday at London Heathrow Airport after a fight with police and British Airways Plc staff.
Dogg, 33, whose real name is Calvin Broadus, and five others were detained for violent disorder and affray after the incident at 6 p.m. They became ``abusive and pushed officers,'' and were held overnight at West London police stations, the Metropolitan Police said in an e-mailed statement today.
The incident began when Dogg, whose records include ``Doggystyle'' and ``Tha Dogfather,'' tried to enter the British Airways first-class lounge at Terminal One with a group of about 30 people traveling with him to Johannesburg, the airline said. Several people weren't allowed in because they had economy-class tickets, which don't offer access to the first-class area.
``The customers then became rude and abusive to our staff,'' the airline said in a statement. It summoned police, and barred them from boarding the flight.
``This kind of behavior will not be tolerated and hence the decision was made to off-load the entire party and refuse them travel,'' the airline said. A representative of Dogg couldn't immediately be reached today.
The musician's scheduled performance tonight in Johannesburg has been canceled, said Michael Anetakis, marketing and advertising executive at promoter Big Concerts, in an interview. Dogg is the headline act in three concerts being staged over the next five days to mark the 12th anniversary of democracy in South Africa.
``We're hoping to get him in for the other concerts in Durban on Saturday and Cape Town on Monday,'' Anetakis said.
About 20,000 people have bought tickets to the Johannesburg concert, which will include other acts such as Pharrell Williams, Mario and a number of local bands, Anetakis said.
Dogg, a native of Long Beach, California, records for Vivendi Universal SA's Geffen label and has branched out to appear in television and movies such as ``The Tenants,'' released earlier this year and ``Starsky and Hutch.'' He appeared alongside Lee Iacocca last year in a DaimlerChrysler AG television commercial and is an executive producer for XM Satellite Radio Holdings Inc., where he also hosts a show.
