Kurt Cobain, completed last year (that's a glass reflection on the top left corner):

Current piece I'm working on:

It's a little more complete at the moment. I'll post an update when I get my camera back (though by that time it may be finished).

You've got skills. On the first one I would say the hair, mainly on the left side, looks a bit empty, too much white space. Maybe the face could use more shading on the cheeks, but the stubble and all looks real nice, eyes are nice, brows are alright but look weird, maybe it's due to the actual picture you were using. The nose is nice, I hate drawing noses.

2nd one's nice as well, hair looks better on this one.

Great sketches K...You already know how I feel about ya work from our convos;) I agree with Alc the left side on Kurt where his hair is looks a little empty. Add a little more shading there and viola! 2nd looks really good especially since its not finished yet. Keep up with ya sketching K...When it comes to ya art and photography....No one's touchin ya :)

The Kurt Cobain one is over a year old so I'm not going to worry about fixing his hair..just shows progress :)

Thanks for all of the replies, I appreciate them.

Something about Kurt's right eye just doesn't look right to me.

Still they're very impressive drawings indeed.

I specialize in portraits when it comes to sketching and painting (with certain paints)..I usually draw "off the top of my head" when I'm airbrushing, using watercolor pencil crayons, oil paint, or when I'm using a canvas that's been kicking around for a while.

I like to have an idea of what I intend to accomplish, so even when I don't have something to mirror I'm always planning in my head.

^^^^Its much better to draw freestyle, since you never have a goal, you can never fail.

Portraits have refined my skill. I'm better with detail.

Don't get me wrong; I do freehand stuff, but there's something about trying to capture a feeling in a portrait that brings me closer to my work. I love working with faces, and different expressions (hence why I like using Angelina a lot even though I don't really like her lol.)

It really depends on the artist's prefrence I guess.

bein an art teacher.....i will comment on the second one only.....its real nice...you actully made your work look better than the picture...and thats a great ability because it shows creativity...anyone can draw what they see but can they keep the basic premises and still expand on it...you can.....and yes portrait/figure drawings can help with detail...but they can aslo take away from your creativity in the the ways of...when your just fuckin off or just doodling you might become restricted....i had that problem not to long ago because i started off in graffiti...and when everyone was askin can i do this and that then i started to drift further from reativity to reality and it was hard to transition back but i have finally got my 'mojo' back an with even greater ability than before......
OVERALL: expand your skill but remember creativity is everything when it comes to ART.....

I agree, but what I'm saying is that I don't have a problem with just making stuff up as I go along; and I'm not afraid to branch from portrait drawing..I just prefer to capture reality as opposed to scribbling something random on a page.
However, I actually do that though. I have a collage that I've been working on for over a year that's made up of random "doodling" from when I was in class or just bored without anything to do. It's about 1.5m x 2.5m as of now.

When I'm working with oil, I hardly do portraits or scenery..I go with a more urban approach & usually draw whatever comes to me.

Portrait painting and sketching has not limited my ability or brought my creativity to a halt. It was something I struggled with when I first got into art so I made a point of turning my weak area into a strength.

Thank you for the in depth reply. I appreciate it.
