View Full Version : What's the best way to clean my comp?

It's going a bit slower than usual... I'm trying to clean it some before it gets too cluttered... I have some songs, studio programs, a couple of movies... But I have high speed connection... It's going way to to slow too soon... The hardrive is fairly new as well.. So what's the best way to clean it? Just defrag it or what?

Delete your cookies and temp files, then run a defrag. I notice my computer always slows down when I don't delete my temps every month or so.

Defragmenting is not gonna help much. Specially not with Windows' defragmenter...

The only thing i know is defragging, but then again i don't own a computer and am probably going to fail IT AS level.

Er... *scratches head some...*

There's got to be a more easier way than to do all of that...:(

Hahaha... Well, the advice is appreciated either or... I just need to get some stuff off so it can go it's normal speed... It's not that much of a difference, but you can surely tell. My pages load slow, and my hardrive is always busy it seems... Which is gay because that also makes the pages load slow..

if you want your computer alot faster then no...

if you want your computer worse, than shit in your hand and smash it into your computers cd drive...

Aura

Blah... I don't even see any floppy's around so I can transfer the data... So I guess that's out of the question... Although it probably would be the more effective way.

He doesn't need to reformat his whole computer just because it's running slow.

Windows has a built in clean up, under accessories I think, but the Norton defrag works a lot better. I've never tried the Windows one so I don't know how bad or good it is. Wouldn't hurt to try I guess.

If you don't have a lot of files or programs loaded you can always reformat but it's tedious to do. Plus you can just burn everything onto CDs instead of transferring your files to another harddrive.

Thank you very much Jane. Actually, I think that's what I am going to do. I am not going to need the start up disc to reformat, am I? I don't really mess around with my computer that much when it comes to things like this. So I'd be looking at copying the files onto a CD, and then what....

No problem..you can also download Norton System Works from torrentspy if nothing else works..

So, once I copy the files onto a disc... How do I run a proper reformat? I've never done this before...

Yeah do what JAne said, especially the Defrag part. Also, go Download Windows Defender and do a full scan and clean out everything it detects.

If you really want, you can back up all the shit on your computer via INSTALLATION FILES not entire folders which may already be infected, and then format your computer. I recently did this and a not only cleared out an irremovable virus, but I also cleared out a shitload of unused harddisk space. I reinstalled every single thing I had installed before I formatted, and I have about 7 GB more.

EDIT :: Just read the rest of Jane's posts, just restating for emphasis I guess.

lmao. Do you have any spyware software? That'll help prevent your system from slowing down by blocking out that crap.

As for doing a defrag, I forget how it's done (clearing your harddrive and all that) but if you ever want to do it just PM me and I'll find the Help thing I used last time & send you instructions.

Meh. I'd rather be computer literate than spend money to fix a problem I could have done myself.

Actually heres a better tip:

Instead of saving pics and vids you like, just save the website in your favorites that way u still have access to them, but they dont take up space on your comp.

That goes for porn or anything else u might like.

If you have lots of pics on your comp make a photobucket account and put all your pics on there, and then you can delete the pics from your computer as they will be right there for you on ur photobucket and then u dont have them taking up extra space.

Also make sure your recycle bin stays empty. Most people delete shit (songs, videos, files...w/e) and send them there and never clear it out, that still takes up space until they are deleted.

those are just simple things that basically anyone can do and not have to be real comp literate.

Defragging doesn't clean your computer =/. It only fixes and organizes the sectors on your hard drive(s). Otherwise, there would be no point in having Disk Cleanup on your computer (Start> Accessories> System Tools> Disk Cleanup).

How about using a ghost disc which comes with the pc..make sure you back-up the vital shit though..you'll have ur computer as fast as when you bought it.

If there's a way to upload programmes, I can send you a few with the crack that are very useful for a fast(er) pc... They aren't big.

Ultimately, it will speed your computer up by organizing/fixing all of the clutter.

Oh, I'm not really familiar with Opera but I found the info on their support page:

I couldn't find anything about temp files, but there should be an option in the tool pannel.

http://www.ccleaner.com/

^ Install that, then run it, analyze then clean. It scans internet files and such, it pretty much deletes everything, including password, cookies, temp files, recycle bin and so on.

First time I ran it it deleted nearly 500mb of internet files and shit like that.
