I have to recommend:

http://www.prevx.com/security.asp

It's brilliant, it monitors everything in your pc that's running for "suspect programmes" and caught a lot of viruses Mcafee etc didnt. It's a free 28 day trial... but Im sure there's a crack available.

I reccomend ZoneAlrm PRO Internet Security Suite. I got it and it has everything: Heavy Firewall, Anti-Virus, Anti-Spyware, IM Protection, Identity Theft, Anti-Spam, Anti-Phishing, Ad/Cookie/Banner Blocker, Email Security, etc.

^ It's the first column, download the free 15-Day trial and should be easy to get a serial.

Another things you could do is follow the directions on this link. The people on that forum are very good with computers and specifically the guy who created the thread on the link.

Heres a good Internet Explorer trick if you cant get some spyware to go away...

1. Open IE.
2. On the Menubar goto "Tools" > "Manage Add-ons" > "Enable or Disable Add-ons"
3. When the Dialog opens you will see a drop down that says "Show.." Make sure that says "Add-ons Currently Loaded in Internet Explorer"
4. Go through the list and disable anything that shouldnt be there...

It will NOT harm your internet in anyway...the worst thing you can do is like disable flash or something and in that case you just re-enable it. If i am using IE i will disable almost all of them as it will save you ram and hence allow for a little faster browsing speed. Not to mention kill any of the programs that the Ad killers cant find.

I just now saw this.

Alright, this will help you get an in-depth analysis of your problem, and a permanent resolution.

Download HiJackThis from www.trendmicro.com (http://www.trendmicro.com). Run the program as instructed, and save the log file. Now, go to http://www.bleepingcomputer.com and post your log files. The people that are generally there are extreeeemely knowledgable about computers, and they will take time to analyze and tell you exactly what is wrong with it. They are forum users just like us, and generally it takes anywhere from 15 min to an hour to get the first response. The rest is just correspondence back and forth. They saved me from having to reinstally Windows XP numerous times when I was getting errors saying that 100% of my memory was in use.

Another really easy way to eliminate a lot of the annoyances with popups and spyware is to go to

Start -> Run -> msconfig -> Selective Startup -> Uncheck Load Startup Items -> Go to Services Tab -> Click Hide Microsoft Services -> Uncheck services you dont recognize -> Apply -> Ok -> Reboot. Doing this will also speed up your computer tremendously, because you avoid having to deal with all the loadtime prep at startup, and frees up resources.

Good sites listed. In addition to those apps always stay current with the Microsoft updates. I think SP3 is out now for Windows XP

I recommend smitfraudfix. I usually this daily at my tech job. It removes AdwarePunisher, AdwareSheriff, SpywareStrike and SpyFalcon people unknowingly install.
