In the story, Superman retires and leaves because he doesn't like the direction superheroes are going in. He's lost his desire because the public is ungrateful and say they don't need him. Meanwhile the public embraces Magog, the violent, selfish anti-hero who is in it for the glory and thinks the people are dirt anyway. In the end, Superman not only returns, but inspires Batman to come out of the cave and help him out.
