It seems the ones who were on that video didn't understand the exact meaning behind Nas making that statement though. I mean, given the South is dominating the game THIS year, Hip-Hop itself had been deprived of it's true meaning. Is it actually about the drunk women in the club or about what has to be said? What needs to be said? What COULD be said by those who have the power to actually have people to listen to them whether it's everyone or just a few. See, back when my moms was growing up, she told me a song was a song. Whether it was focused for the club scene or something with intelligence & meaning, people danced to it if it was hot. Like, these days, the base line of a track is more important than the actual music. More important than the lyrics themselves. Remember, in the late 80's early 90's was when those types of base lines became so popular. Because, well, I remember dancing as fast as I could when MC Hammer was still on. It's kind of funny how that one clown took offense for ATL, instead of being smarter to understand how and why a lot of the pioneers believe Hip-Hop is dead. I mean, I am even starting to believe that there really may be a difference between a 'Rap Artist' and a 'Hip-Hop Artist' because of the way some emcees present themselves. Shit, I even seen girls dancing to ' I know I can' in the club before...:( It's really sad actually. Although a lot of the south artists such as T.I, Young Jeezy, Weezy... They don't produce the postive standing on Hip Hop as much as they could (well, T.I does a bit) but I think Nas is more focused on what ISN'T being talked about. I was just watching VH1 the other day seeing some of the old joints, and man, it's very well true. Hip-Hop is dead to those who used to view it as the only dictating government for things our government didn't dictate on or about. It's kind of fitting a lot of the streotypes of why a lot of people believe Hip Hop is so bad for society, in ways I understand this now. But even still, it's sad to see that when people go into mainstream too far, their minds are more focused on being accepted by people who are already used to the obvious, instead of doing their own thing. Everything is looking more like a routined progress than it is art these days. No hate to anyone, because I like a lot of things as far as being what's considered 'hot' in our generation. But a lot of it is just looking & sounding the same.. pi0neer 10-16-2006, 01:48 AM Hip Hop is bigger than what people try to confine it to. Don't get me wrong, I would be the first one to tell you that your D-groups (D4L/DFB), the "Yung" ones (Joc/Dro), and the professional coons (Jibbs/DJ Webstar and the chicken noodle soup chick) are all taking Hip Hop in a bad direction. I can't stand 90% of the rap music that comes out nowadays because it reinforces the horrible consumer lifestyle that is a big part of what keeps black people poor in the hood, uneducated, and/or in jail (or dead). I wish that everyone could be a Nas or a Lupe Fiasco and make people think when they get on the mic. But unfortunately that is not what Hip Hop is right now. And I seriously doubt that is what Hip Hop well ever be. The fact is, in order to get a studio to give you a record deal, they have to believe that you will sell records and make them money. They believe that based on what trends in music are popular and have been selling well. And that in turn is based on popular consumer culture, or what the people want. If you look at the average person, what the idiots on that video said is true. They don't care about what a person is saying as much as they care about whether it is music they can have fun with. That's why club music is so prevalent nowadays, and why it always has been, because it is what people can enjoy. In my opinion (and I feel like a lot of people here are the same way), that is a bunch of bull, and I would give pretty much anything to change the rap game so that people actually had to have talent or something relevant to say when they got on the mic. But I can't do that, none of us can. At least not by ourselves. If anyone has seen Jay-z's "Fade to Black" movie, I'm sure you remember the part where the dude was like, I don't even like writing like that, but that's what sells, or something like that. That's the way things are in music right now (He're as link to it: http://youtube.com/watch?v=A_e1fkhpdEg) In order to get Hip Hop to really change, the people are going to have to change, and people are going to have to be re-educated about how the world really works. The mindset of most people in the hood never goes beyond the hood, so that's why they get stuck there. You can only go as far in life as you can think, and most of the time you don't even get that far. Right now, rap music is a self reinforcing cycle. People what to here crappy music they can dance to, so artists make crappy music that people can dance to (or at least those are the artists that get signed most of the time). Until the people change, the music isn't going to.... And THAT is why dude is asking "why does it always have to be about something?" Because most rappers nowadays are just trying to get radio play so they can put some dollars in their pockets. And music that is "about something" for the average artist, means they're not going to sell, which means their career is goning nowhere. (Lupe Fiasco is an exception luckily but he is where he is in part because of his connections to Jay-Z and Kanye....be real, how many of you heard him before "Touch the Sky"? And even with all the buzz he was able to generate, dude doesn't see going beyond 700,000). Besides most of them don't have the skill to make introspective tracks, so they take the easy road. Hip Hop isn't dead, it's just the Real Hip Hop that is dying....but regardless club Hip Hop isn't going anywhere, and that's a fact. pi0neer 10-16-2006, 02:03 AM ^^^ I think I agree pretty much completely with what Mal/Cass was saying....it feels like we need to differentiate between mainstream rap and Hip Hop, which actually has a message to communicate. Things would work better if the artist would take a stand for being true to their art, but for one, most people are afraid to stand up and then drop an album that flops, and for two a lot of the artists nowadays don't know any more about the world the ignorant masses they make music for. (Like even if Fabo from D4L actually was saying something making a political statement about the world, I would probably give my 7 and a half month old nephew's opinion more weight). Dras 10-16-2006, 02:29 AM Thanks for the reply's yall....I read them throughly. X-NINE 10-16-2006, 02:30 AM don't ignore the quote "why does rapping have to be about something" Aite imma put it like this mayne.... All them ATL niggas (Well not all, im just sayin) make shit for ENTERTAINMENT PURPOSES, obviously, THEY ARE NOT THINKING OF LYRICS, NOR SHIT, NOR ANYTHING, THEY ARE TRYING TO MARKET A SONG WITH SIMPLE LYRICS TO SELL, AND OBVIOUSLY TO DO THAT, THEY COME UP WITH THE SNAP YOUR FINGERS SHIT, THAT SHITS BLOWS UP, AND NOW MOTHAFUCKAS GOT AN ANTHEM THAT POPS OFF IN CLUBS, AND ALL THE SORTS.........NOW TO BE HONEST, IM 2 SIDED ABOUT THE MAINSTREAM AND ETC......I MYSELF KNOW THE SNAP SHIT IS GARBAGE, BUT AT THE SAME TIME ITS LIKE THIS MUSIC WAS JUST MEANT FOR DANCING AND ENTERTAINMENT, AND A MUSIC TO HAVE FUN TO, NO MATTER HOW OR IF THAT SHIT IS IGNORANT, PPL IS DANCING TO IT.......IF THAT SHIT COMES ON AT A CLUB, SHIT, ILL HATE IT, BUT I MITE GET DOWN WITH SOME CHICK TO THAT SHIT, BUT OUTSIDE THE CLUB, I WOULD NEVER PUT THAT SHIT ON....THAT SHIT WAS MADE FOR MOTHAFUCKAS TO GRIND ON CHIX WITH AND TO GET LAID TO. AND SECOND, IN SOME CASES, LYRICS ARENT EVEN NECCESSARY TO MAKE A STANDOUT TRACK, AND CAM'RON IS AN EXCELLENT EXAMPLE..... THIS NIGGA USED TO BE ALL LYRICAL WHEN HE RAPPED WITH BIG L, AND ON HIS FIRST THREE ALBUMS, 'CONFESSIONS OF FIRE, S.D.E. AND COME HOME WITH ME', BUT WHEN HE LAUNCHED DIPSET AND PUT OUT 'PURPLE HAZE' CAM KNEW AT THE TIME NO ONE WAS TRYING TO USE LYRICS TO SELL, SO HE ENDS UP RAPPIN FOR ENTERTAINMENT, NOW HE DID DUMB DOWN HIS MUSIC, NO DOUBT, BUT AT THE SAME TIME, HIS NEWER SHIT IS HILARIOUS AS FUCK, WHEN IM LISTNENIN TO HIS NEWER SHIT, ITS FOR ENTERTAINMENT AT THE CRIB, AND THATS WHAT ITS MEANT FOR, JUST LIKE HE MADE THAT 'KILLA SEASON' MOVIE, SAME THING WHEN YOU GO OUT TO WATCH A COMEDY MOVIE, UR JUST GOING TO GET ENTERTAINED FOR THE FUCK OF IT, YOUR NOT TRYING TO WATCH A SERIOUS FILM OR NONE OF THAT, AND THATS WHAT CAM'S BEEN DOING WITH HIS MUSIC, AND ITS MORE ORIGINAL THAN ANY SHIT D4L CAN EVER GENERATE IN THEIR ENTIRE LIVES.......WHEN YOU LISTEN TO D4L, YOUR NOT LISTENING FOR LYRICS, YOUR DANCING TO THIS SHIT, CLUB MUSIC, NOTHING MORE, NOTHING LESS, THESE NIGGAS AINT RAKIM, THIS IS ENTERTAINMENT MUSIC, PLAIN AND SIMPLE....... THATS THE PROBLEM I THINK IS WRONG WITH FANS THESE DAYS, THEY THINK EVERYTHING HAS TO BE ABOUT SOMETHING OR ELSE IT ISNT 'HIPHOP'.....FUCK OUTTA HERE, OLD SCHOOL CATS ROCKED CROWDS BY SAYING 'WAVE YA HANDS IN THE AIR, WAVE EM LIKE YOU JUST DONT CARE' 'AND THEN SCREAMMM!!!!' HOW IS THAT ANY DIFFERENT TO LIL JOHN SAYING 'GET CRUNK IN THIS MOTHAFUCKA' SAME THING, ONLY THE TIMES CHANGED......IS OLD SCHOOL CATS NOT HIPHOP FOR ROCKING CROWDS LIKE THAT? IS LIL JOHN (EVEN THO I DONT FUCK WITH HIM) NOT HIPHOP IN SOME WAY FOR ROCKING CROWDS WITH 'GET CRUNK'? SOMETHING YALL SHOULD THINK ABOUT.....AND NEXT OFF, I THINK PPL FUCK THEMSELVES IN THE HEAD WITH THIS 'REAL HIPHOP' PHILOSOPHY..... SHIT, LUPE PUT OUT A HELLUVA GOOD ALBUM FOR HIPHOP THAT IS CLASSIC THAT IS PUSHIN THE LIMITS, AND THATS GOOD, BUT WHAT EXACTLY DO YOU MEAN BY 'REAL'? TO ME ITS FOR THE LISTENER TO DECIDE IF IT IS OR NOT, BUT THAT DONT MEAN ITS ACTUALLY REAL TO THE OPEN PUBLIC.... I DONT CARE, WHAT GENRE OF HIPHOP IT IS, IF ITS GOOD TO ME, ITS GOOD TO ME, IF ITS SUCKS, IT SUCKS TO ME, LYRICAL OR NOT, ALL I CARE ABOUT IS IF A TRACK REALLY APPEALS TO ME, AND IS SOMETHIN IM GONNA FEEL IF IM LOOKIN FOR LYRICS, OR JUST BUMP FOR THE FUCK OF IT......Z-RO IS LYRICAL, AND ILL LISTEN TO HIM BECAUSE HIS MUSIC REFLECTS ON TOUGH LOVE, STRUGGLE AND PAIN RELATED SHIT THAT I CAN RELATE TO OR FEEL CONNECTED TO, BUT WHEN IM PLAYING THREE 6 MAFIA, IM PLAYIN THAT SHIT TO GET HYPE AND LISTEN TO SOME GRIMEY ASS LYRICS......BUT AT THE END OF THE DAY, ITS JUST PREFERENCE YO, ALL I CAN SAY, IF YOU DONT LIKE IT JUST DONT PAY ANY MORE ATTN TO IT....ALL MUSIC, INCLUDING MAINSTREAM MUSIC IS GOOD OR BAD, SAME APPLYS FOR ALL UNDERGROUND SHIT AS WELL, ITS EITHER GOOD OR BAD, AND I PERSONALLY THINK SAGE FRANCIS IS WACK AS HELL, NOT TO BE NO HATER, BUT HIS SHIT IS BORING AND NOT THAT ACCESIBLE FOR ME...... LASTLY, EVERY FUCKIN ONE SHOULD READ MY POST IN THIS THREAD ESPECIALLY.......AND TAKE A LOOK AT THIS THREAD ON ANOTHER SITE THAT DEFENDS COMMERCIAL RAP, SERIOUSLY IM OUT http://www.phorumz.com/hiphop4eva-about7877-0.html (http://www.phorumz.com/hiphop4eva-about7877-0.html) Gold. 10-16-2006, 10:12 AM u realize Nas never said nuttin bout the south Exacly, they know their crap, they said themselves that it was the south ruining hip hop BoneStarr 10-16-2006, 11:57 AM Well I just ignored most of everything that they were saying mainly because they didn-t know what they were talking abut, the only decent reson they gave which I payed attention two was "In the club thing", ok thats cool Nukka, but what about when there wasn-t any of the shit there was today, there was this: yhjFhgXQrxM I remember when that shit was in all of the clubs and a lot more stuff like this and they still had decent lyricis... I can't stand the southern rappers, Outkast was god because there style was different but it still had real lyrics and kept to the rap game rules... Fuck those fools... X-NINE 10-16-2006, 09:20 PM ^^Like I said, todays south in the mainstream is marketable by club anthems, and commercialized/pop production, its been oversaturated with so much of the same shit, its IMPOSSIBLE for anyone to even realise theres good music in the south, because of the frequent spins songs get like 'Walk It Out' and 'Lean Wit It Rok Wit It'.....Rite now the south is bein USED by corperations to sell that shit, cuz that shit is obviously more marketable than east music, but as I said is gonna die out eventually cuz that shit is a fad, somethin thats gonna fade the fuck out till the industry finds some otha shit to market off of......And to prove this snap shit has died, Just look at how many N.Y., and West niggas have gone independent this year on KOCH, like Fat Joe, Xzibit, Cam'ron, Scarface, B.G., and D-Block, etc, shit, once more or er-one doin that, the majors will have to find some thin else to sell.... Now I will NOT say hiphop is dead, because imo, that term is played the fuck out as hell, and dont mean a DAMN thing to me.....When I hear someone say that, I want to know WHY, and exactly wtf that person means, but when ppl say that shit, it always seems to just reference the south music on the airwaves that is so simplistic and 'ignorant' to many.... Tru, to some degree theres been some bullshit from the south thats addin to simplistic rap thats comin out, but it aint just them, that shit applys to EVERY other region and the underground in general...... And them niggas in that vid question the 'Hiphop is dead' shit cuz they think its an east hates the south thing, but then again south was NEVER hatin on no one in general, it was just the east coast, and now this shit catchin up and is gonna get alotta shit fucked up between the south and east, with the debate of the south all supposedly having 3rd grade ass lyrics, against N.Y., which is where this hiphop shit started, that founded the basics of the music with lyricism, etc and etc..... Rite now all I can say is that this shit aint doin shit but furthering the hate between the South and the East Coast...... .ScottishHead 10-16-2006, 09:24 PM Those wack rappers are: http://www.corny.de/img/content/packshots_big.jpg |
