I need to transfer really large files from my laptop to pc and standard networking takes way too long. I have a firewire cable and want to know if it's possible to connect a laptop to a PC using a firewire connection. If it is, do you have any instructions?

What is BeInSync?

Has this ever happened to you? Didn’t have an important file with you just when you needed it the most? Forgot to email office files to yourself and therefore couldn't use them at home? Lost valuable data?
BeInSync enables you to seamlessly and securely access and use your latest data anytime, anywhere - at the office, from home or on the go. Using innovative Secure Peer-to-Peer Technology that automatically keeps your files and folders in sync and backed up across multiple computers (home PC, office PC, laptop), BeInSync ensures that wherever you go, your data will follow.
Access your data from home
Keep your files and folders always current and in sync between your PCs.
Save the expense and avoid the privacy risk involved with hosted server solutions.
Easily maintain a backup of your files on your own computers.Access your data from the road
Use any Web browser to access your remote files.
Maintain high security and privacy.
Eliminate the need to carry a laptop everywhere.Share any size files and folders with others
Easily define multiple shared folders.
Work together with customers, partners, colleagues and friends.
Efficiently and securely exchange any size file. How does it work?

Simply install BeInSync on each of the computers you would like to synchronize and specify what you'd like to synchronize - your desktop, your My Documents folder, emails, contacts, favorites and more.
From now on, whenever you create, modify or delete any of these items, these changes will automatically be reflected on your other PCs as well. This way, you can keep on working from anywhere without ever again having to be concerned about the whereabouts of your data.
You may also use BeInSync’s secure Web access to access your remote files or view contents of shared folders instantly from any computer or location, without first installing BeInSync on this computer.
Finally, BeInSync extends data synchronization to allow you to securely share any amount of data with colleagues, partners, customers and friends. Simply invite one or more people to a shared folder. An email message will be sent with a link to that shared folder which resides on your own computer. The invitees will be able to view it from any Web browser instantly and securely, or they may install BeInSync as well and keep the shared files in sync automatically on their computer. This way you can work simultaneously on this shared folder with the same ease as working on your local files.

^^ I don't think this is what he wants.

I did that via USB some time ago. You need a little adapter for that. Something like that. (Note that USB 2.0 is faster than Firewire)

You can do it with the firewire cable if you go to network connections and click View Workgroup Computers. Put all the files you wanna transfer in the Shared Documents folder in C:\ on your laptop, and then on your Desktop, view the Workgroup and your laptop name should appear. Just click and drag em from the Shared Docs folder onto your PC.

Yeah, death rowe, I'm not really looking for synchronizing software.

Kron, I think you could be onto something. The network connections jams my pc when it searches but that's further than I got before. When I plug in the cable, a box comes up with "unrecognizable driver" which is probably why it jams up. Now I just need to find a driver which is gonna be a mission. :(

Nico, I might have to try out your advise and get a USB 2.0 cable since it would be much quicker. Do you know what price range USB cables are ?

Thanks guys :D

Like (*calculates*) 5 GBP, cable plus adaptor and software. The one I used looked a bit like an FTP client. You drag and drop files from on PC to the other.

Why not use a cross-over cable to transfer the files?

N1, I'll check it out.

What do you mean my cross-over ? I wanted to use the firewire cable since I have a spare one and just wondered if it was possible. At the moment I have a standard network and a wi-fi one to transfer the files but it does take nearly 1 hour to transfer using ftp. :(

Do you have a ethernet port on both your laptop and your PC? If you do then you can use either a "straight through" cable or a "crossover" cable to transfer the files.

Sometimes I needa download backups and DVDs on my laptop overnight. My pc is way too noisey to sleep while it's switched on. The videos are actually as large as a DVD (5GB) since my screen is big. So most of the time I needa tranfer 5GB-15GB which takes ages.

Gigabit ethernet? Most Pcs have a gigabit ethernet slot on the motherboard. Thats 1000mbps. (or you can get add in cards) Not sure if it would be on your laptop... could be I guess. Then get a cat 6 cable. That would work. Could be more expensive, but it would be ultra fast.
