The two things are more or less equal in importance but you can't have the one without the other. They both need to be on point.

Nas
Mos Def
Q-Tip *
Posdnuos *
GZA
Common
Kweli
Doom
Black Thought
Rakim

It goes something like that but the order is different. I feel stupid when I make these lists though cause honestly, what noteworthy music have ATCQ or De La Soul made lately? Still nice with the lyrics regardless but it just seems irrelevant to list them.

Something like this, in no order apart from Rakim Cos he is the G.OA.T:

1 - Rakim
Of course, youd expect the God Rakim to be at the top being the greatest lyricist of all time. Besides having that, he is also the first PURE lyricist to ever come out. Fueling on pure multi-syllable and perfectly conjucted words, this man CAN NOT be touched whatsoever. The king of braggadiocio, which will make you look utterly retarded on the mic, and make himself like royalty, definetely deserves to be #1 and no doubt inspired pretty much everybody on this list (apart from G Rap). This is one of the few artists where virtually no line he has ever spat has been filler or wasted and each line is carefully crafted together seemlessly. His delivery and lyricism leaves me in "awe" each time he spits, and he's continued to get better and better as the years go by. His confidence is unmatched, and he has a right to be.

Nas
Kool G Rap
Canibus
Big Daddy Kane
Chuck D
Pharoahe Monch
Ras Kass (A controversial choice but Ras Kass's amazing metaphors are beyond that of any other artist)
Gza
KRS One (the Teacher, the Legend)

Notable people i left out and the reasons:

Big Pun (Died too early to be considered on the above list. If he were still maing music today he would be one of the greatest no doubt)

Jay-Z (Has fallen off from his Reasonable Doubt days, though he still has his moments of amazing lyricism. He probably would be around 11 or 12 with Common. But hes overrated extremely)

Common (He would be probably 11 or 12, but hes more of a poet)

Guru (A bit too monotone at times)

Vinnie Paz (See Above also Needs more material... not too known)

2pac (Never went too complicated, but when he did, it was good)

Notorious B.I.G. (Usually suffered from poor subject matter)

Ice Cube (Fell of Drastically, but had his moments)

Outkast (both members) (Probably 13 or 14, yet there are two)

Jadakiss (Poor Subject Matter, and is beginning to decline)

Q-Tip (Drastically Fell off... not to complicated)

I don't know much of Sage to comment, but Aesop's flow is an aquired sound. However, I can understand why you'd say that if you don't listen to him on a daily basis, like I do. But...each album he's progressed in his delivery immensely. Peep his myspace to the snippet from his new album...along with the other tracks on there.

can't believe i forgot de la soul... i'd say posdnous and trugoy (is that his name?) are probably the most intelligent to have consistently managed to make dope albums and stay relatively successful and accessible. haven't heard their latest one, but grind date i thought for the most part was sick, the track with carl thomas is amazing.

del the funky homosapien never gets a mention either

"a ghost in a shell, alone in a cell,
i wrote this in jail playing host to myself"

deltron 3030 and no need for alarm are both classics, and wish my brother george was here is one of the funkiest records i've ever heard.
to me he is one has the perfect balance of flow and lyricism, aswell as sick concepts and subject matter. his production sometimes lets him down though.

abstract rude, aceyalone & micah 9 are all fucking sick with their lyrics too. the left coast definately gets slept on on this forum.

they don't get any love though, in fact freestyle fellowship are probably the most lyrical group of emcees ever. espescially for their time, shit was on some next levels with their structure and rhyme schemes. aceyalones verses on my fantasy is unbelievable

"do you want to be part of my fantasy?
insanity, vanity, family, Kennedy, can it be?
it'll be great we can break all laws of gravity
make room, or fly to the moon on a broom
we can let it get better, get etiquette, adequate,
that'll get sloppy, ten-four, you copy?
big jollopy I pop a seed, pop a floppy
teenybopper, hoppy, hype, my squad's the gods of the mic
so play vanilla, hammer, shamma-lamma-ding-dong
killer, slummer, plan a pop song, KA!
but I like breakbeats and beatin' on the walls of bathrooms
the b-boys b boys forever
yo, punk- what's your function?
robotics, planets, products, annex, got it
mechanics or sonics, organic, exotic, narcotic
bought it, forgot it
I jot it down 'til I'm hooked on phonics"

thats like the opening 16 bars and the man just keeps flowing

Lil Wayne

"Fuck up wit all these rookie MCs
(whew!) smell like a bunch of pussy to me
Fuck Em!
Fuck 'em good fuck long fuck 'em hard
Fuck who? Fuck 'em all
(yeah)like dat jus like dat
I'm on dat money train and the mac'll knock 'em off track
The quarterback well protected from the +Warren Sapp+
The young heart attack I spit dat cardiac
You can't see me baby boy you got dat catorax
I'm right here straight out the hood jus like an alley cat
Since everyone's a king where the fuckin' palace at
Me I got calus on my hand I can handle dat
Its no problem baby I so got 'em
Its just a victory lap baby I'm jus joggin'
And I ain't even out of breathe
the motherfuckin' best yet sorry for cursing
Who?"

How can anyone take him seriously? He comes tight sometimes like "niggaz hungry cuz they ain't ate nothin, but they wanna leave when you say you outta mustard", but I don't like them wack punchlines like that toilet one. Even if it's somewhat decent, I'd rather have serious lyrics. That's why I'm not big on rappers that rely on punches.

only the strong survive, and strive through life as warriors
All of us die, some of us killed, even massacred
who wanna try? punish your will if you ask for it
i'm hazardous for your health, and hell's your next stop
for real my shit's cocked, your world has just stopped...
im not the one you should be under-estimatin'
come test ur fate and i guarantee i'll be under investigation
you cant handle the whole, i'll slam you on ur skull

however though i still hold the title
give all my rivals a chance to dance, who missed the homocidal
hand on my bible i swear to defend the crown
i've been around since forever and never let it touch the ground
Don't fuck around and catch a rude awakenin'
My crew's basically waitin' patiently for you to move your patrons in
Then we'll surround you, form Desert Storm and pound you
Look around you, TS's everywhere like Soundview

NaS - Not the greatest lyricist but still a definite top10

Talib Kweli - One of the very few commercial rappers who have an amazing ability to have strong lyrics and tell a great story with an excellent theme..

im surprised so many put Black Thought actually, some people think he needs to step his game up. And don't get me wrong, he's one of my favourite of all time, but I dont think he belongs in a top 10 *lyricist* list
