View Full Version : Hip Hop as a product
elementary 02-13-2007, 09:13 AM I was reading an interview with a Dutch rapper in the newspaper. He was stating that ''Hip Hop is my product'' and such things. I have read a qoute from Biggie somewhere in which he says he would ''rap about some fucking flowers if that would bring bread on the table''.
what is your opinion on this? I personally think you shouldn't consider Hip Hop as a product, and it makes me angry when artist are using it this way. I mean there are enough example of people who can combine sales with ''keeping it real'' like Nas. In my opinion, Hip Hop ideally should be something pure and artistic
what are your views on this matter?
Tom.B 02-13-2007, 09:27 AM It should be pure and artistic, but you can't be mad a people for trying to make a living. If a record company is making a shit load of money off of a rapper, there is nothing wrong a rapper trying to get thier piece of the pie.
elementary 02-13-2007, 09:56 AM I understand what you are saying
but, currently the commercial rappers arent ''making a living''. They are getting filthy rich.
.ScottishHead 02-13-2007, 10:13 AM Do it for the love of the art,not the money.

I agree with you there....you have to make a living, but commercializing the artform is wrong.
Alan Johnson 02-13-2007, 02:11 PM Hip hop is a culture not a product... you cant buy hip hop in my opinion, but you can be immersed into the culture
MasSGyozA 02-13-2007, 02:14 PM i can deal with people making a ton of money as long as they keep the rhymes fresh and come with good beats. i could care less about how much money binary star makes, because they put out some high quality shit. on the same token, i dont give a shit about chamillionaires salary because the money isnt the issue. thats not why i dont like him.
we cant really deny that onld school rappers werent out to make a buck like these new kids, but at least they deserve the money they made.
Alan Johnson 02-13-2007, 02:18 PM Altho it sucks to see good artists go unheard(unpaid), those that actually enjoy the art...
Gold. 02-13-2007, 03:37 PM I dunno really... yea you shouldn't only rap for money, but is you wanna be a rapper anyway and you're good, I don't see why you shouldn't be able to make some money. But I don't think rappers should rap about something thats not real to them just to make money, thats fuckin gay
Ama-gi 02-13-2007, 06:49 PM I agree with you there....you have to make a living, but commercializing the artform is wrong.

TheBhranz 02-13-2007, 07:10 PM there's an obvious difference b/t hip hop as an art & as commercialized music ... and really they both have things with can be appreciated ... and some artists are lucky enough to converge & be successful in both ...
so cant really answer the question cuz i dont think of it as the same thing
<~>
