View Full Version : What percentage of Hip Hop in general is quality?
Bone24 02-24-2007, 02:13 AM There's this kid at school who keeps trying to tell me that 95% of rap is garbage. I keep telling him otherwise, but I want to make sure I get my facts straight. Of all the rap artists that are known at least nation wide, what percentage is considered quality by a Hip Hop Head.
In other words, is it 75% garbage? Or is it 75% quality?
I know quality/garbage is hard to determine and is somewhat opinionated, but I want to know what you guys think.
.
"KingSolomDin" 02-24-2007, 02:18 AM whats quality and whats garbage for the most part has to do with personal preference. i think 65% is quality.
Alan Johnson 02-24-2007, 04:27 AM well mainstream or underground? specify please
Hayzoos 02-24-2007, 04:45 AM well mainstream or underground? specify please
wtf? its the same thing, you act like they are 2 different types of music, the only difference is that the underground isnt in the public eye and isnt signed to a major label
and to answer the quesiton, music is 100% subjective, so theres no right or wrong answer
Alan Johnson 02-24-2007, 04:48 AM They are 2 different type. Hip Hop on the commercial circuit has died, with the exceptional few that still pull off dope shit(ie: nas, common and shit) but the majority is filled with paul wall, unk, etc...
Pen To Paper 02-24-2007, 04:52 AM Everyone has their preferences man. Some guys like to go to sleep with girls who have piercings others like to put girls to sleep and then give them piercings.
Hayzoos 02-24-2007, 04:54 AM ^ how can entire culture and genre of music be defined by 2 people, both of who have HUGE followings of fans? music, art, literature, they are all 100% subjective and when it comes to critiquing it, it is merely a matter of opinion, and who the fuck is to say that there are 2 different types of hip hop? who decided that, you? dont think so, to you, the "commercial circuit" may be dead, but i know a ton of people who love it and it is well alive to them, but may not be to you, and conversely, they may think that some of the underground stuff today is wack, its their opinion, it doesnt make you any better or worse for liking it, now please shut the fuck up with your elitest views on hip hop, you are not the judge of quality of music.
EDIT: @ Tehgame's faggot ass
Alan Johnson 02-24-2007, 04:58 AM Its My Fucking Opinion, Thats What He Asked For....
Learn to FUCKING read... your like a little kid. For real!
Did I say a underground head, has to like mainstream... did i say a mainstream head is wrong for liking what he likes. no, i dislike the music because I dislike what it does to the general publics view on culture. People think hip hop or "rap" is about drugs killing and all that, because they immediatly tune out of thier mind lyrics, and see a black person, tlaking about something they have no idea, while pointing a gun around. (ie: gunit) They also look at artists like paul wall and unk, and try to tune into listening to what they say... yet those artists say nothing intellectual so they think all rap is stupid...
People who like mainstream, can like who they want... i dont care. likewise for underground. Im not that into MFDoom, i just couldnt get into his style, but that doesnt mean people like scottishhead are wrong for liking him.
Hayzoos 02-24-2007, 05:01 AM ^ saying that there are 2 different types of hip hop is NOT an opinion, its you just being a jackass who thinks he knows everything hip hop, now go run along and slobber on Royce's cock for a few hours, a hip hop forum is a place where you should be nowhere near

How is it not an opinion, Why cant I classify them differently? Where is the proof of fact that Commercial err mainstream is also in teh same catagory as underground...
Gold. 02-24-2007, 05:03 AM Hip Hop is hip hop for fuck sake man, if he says what percentage of hip hop is good, he means all hip hop, so why would it have to be underground or mainstream? You seem to act like theycan't be spoken in the same sentence, when people ask for classic albums, you go underground or mainstream, when people ask your favourite songs, you say underground or mainstream, when people say what are you anticipating, you say underground or mainstream, honestly hip hop is hip hop, just leave at that please

Alan Johnson 02-24-2007, 05:10 AM I posted the young buck album, because it just leaked and is anticipated, i have NO hate for young buck... he's doing his thing, yes i think he's arrogant at times, but much better then other artists out there of less caliber. I can actually sit through a young buck cd or track, whereas if i hear another paul wall song on the radio, ill tune out.
ALOT of people wanna know what that albums about, so i posted it...
Go cry me a river!
in my opinion: There truly is a difference between Underground and Commercial... Alot of commercial artists have no love for actual hip hop, and are out there to take advantage of it, while artists who are struggling to come up, get shafted.
I never said they cant be said in the same sentance, but I wasnt sure on wether the guy wanted an all aroudn hip hop quality % or of a particular section of hip hop.

how do you know they have no love for the culture? have you talked to them personally? how do you know that alot of the underground guys arent just "culture rapists" as well? and dont hit me with that paul wall video, ive seen it millions of times, tell me how exactly you know they have no love for the culture
Alan Johnson 02-24-2007, 05:18 AM Does that paul wall video not show you??? Im sure he's not the only one
Hayzoos 02-24-2007, 05:23 AM Does that paul wall video not show you??? Im sure he's not the only one
you just proved my point, i am now going to bed
Alan Johnson 02-24-2007, 05:25 AM ^ He says it clear as day.
Pen To Paper 02-24-2007, 05:27 AM I take it the pokemon cards are not going great^^ as you negative repped me. I take it that your deck is begining to crumble with each of your cards holding the same HP and attack rate as a measly Weedle.

Alan Johnson 02-24-2007, 05:29 AM No, i neg repped you because your immature, and your responce has nothing to do with it...
Only you would know so much about pokemon... to go and post pictures, names and stats

Your not cool. You may think your cool but I'm just telling ya this man that your not all that cool.
whoremoans 02-24-2007, 05:57 AM Your not cool. You may think your cool but I'm just telling ya this man that your not all that cool.
dont worry bout it, ill positive rep anyone who can correctly allude to pokemon.
also, im gonna take 5%.
mainstreams pretty much a barren wasteland, and underground as a whole also has a lot of garbage artists, and mainstreamers parading as underground to look more authentic.
Alan Johnson 02-24-2007, 05:58 AM omg, im so sad, i dont have cool status on a internet forum!...
ult1matum 02-24-2007, 06:01 AM I say it's 35% quality.
.ScottishHead 02-24-2007, 07:24 AM I voted 60%. This is for todays hip hop though. Ive been buying 80s and 90s hip hop mostly,so that doesnt count. Commercial albums for the last couple of years have been alright, never be the same as 90s. Some dope underground releases too.
Bone24 02-24-2007, 02:37 PM In the thread title I specified Hip Hop in general. It doesn't matter what year, whether it's underground or not, what genre, etc.
And in my first post I asked what percentage is considered quality by a Hip Hop Head. Basically, what percentage of hip hop is not ignorant.
A lot of rock listeners think that rap is the opposite of intelligence and skill. Are there more Paul Walls/T.I.s or are there more Jus Allahs/Commons?
.
.ScottishHead 02-24-2007, 03:15 PM 90% then
Plug Zero 02-24-2007, 03:27 PM Why are people coming with answers like: music is subjective, there's no right or wrong answer...???
Well of course, but the purpose of the poll is to see what the majority's opinion is. When you vote for president, there's no right or wrong answer but that doesn't mean you shouldn't vote.
Sorry, but when people answer questions with all this evasive, philisophical kinda crap, it annoys me a little bit.
I vote 100%. Anything with a little rhythm is worth something to me.
Hayzoos 02-24-2007, 03:35 PM ^ i voted 100% also
Glenn Swagmire 02-24-2007, 03:40 PM whats quality and whats garbage for the most part has to do with personal preference. i think 65% is quality.

Hayzoos 02-24-2007, 03:43 PM whoever voted 5% really should not be listening to hip hop...

Let me see your personal opinion then. I stated in the first post to tell me what you guys think is quality in the eyes of a hip hop head.

i can pick quality from every type of hip-hop ...
i listen to it all from the mainstream to the underground to the mixtape scene to the old school ...
i'm too lazy to make up a big list ... but when i go through all my albums 90% of it is quality music ...
Alan Johnson 02-24-2007, 04:02 PM In that case, when i go through alll my albums i hvae, 90% is quality as well, i have those few beat songs... and what not that im into.
Juice. 02-24-2007, 04:05 PM 98%
I could be riding in my car listening to "T.I. - Top Back", I could go to the club, and listen to "MIMS - This Is Why I'm Hot", then I could head back to the house and bump "Rakim - Don't Sweat The Technique", then I could wake up and turn on "Mos Def - Hip-Hop."
Then there's that 2% that I simply don't like. For no particular reason I can pinpoint. Shit that is just not good music.
Gold. 02-24-2007, 04:35 PM I can't say 100% is good, come on the idealistic, no genre is absolutely perect. I honestly can't make myself like "Walk it Out" or "Get wild" type songs, or diddy/new eminem/50 Cent songs, there is garbage out there, but there is more good hip hop than bad IMO
Quale 02-26-2007, 05:32 AM 50 %, I wish that I'll someday reach higher percentages
Tom.B 02-26-2007, 09:56 AM Less then 50% right now. For every hot album, there are two wack ones.....
