View Full Version : Who Can Challenge Nas Lyrically??

Who do you think can challenge Nas lyrically. Who would Nas have to worry about lyrically?? Give reasons.

I think if Pac was here, he could, but no one comes in mind, except Jay if he concentrates on it. that BluePrint 2 diss was horrible with a nice beat. 50 Cent maybe can hit a few lines, but he has no special asset in his game. Like Nas, he can tell a story in reveres, be a machine gun, you name it.

the only people who are as good as Nas lyrically are Pac, Royce, Eminem and Canibus.

Tupac

2pac would kill nas lyrically, but sence he isnt here I think nas is the freestlyle king... But eminem is very good 2 so he would had 2 worry with him.
50 and Jay-Z? C'Mon Ill Nas would kill 'em with 4 or 6 lines...

In a battle... most any renowned battler could serve him, but just as far as who I think is a better lyricist?

Well, Nas is one of the top three ever for pure lyrics IMO, but I think Ras Kass, when he wants to be, is lyrically above the entire game...

This is the thing:

NAS writes intellectual lyrics...listen to his shit, hear the vocab. A lot of rappers have difficulties battlin' because that's not their forte. I don't think it's a problem, per se, it's an inadequacy on part of the judges. If I have a punch that runs into intellectual shit or underground knowledge the judge knows nothing about, then how can I win a battle. Throwing inumerous punches which are non-sequiter wit the person you're battling is what most do. Nas don't do that. I think he would serve Eminem. On a lyrical level, no rapper can challenge him. Listen to lyrics playaz, not the bullshit filler most rappers battle wit.

And remember the once-upon-a-time Jay, who got discredited--and still hasn't bounced back--after Ether and the one man assault on the rap game.

*sighs* No he's not. LOL. He's farrrrrr from being the freestyle king. And Nas could not touch Jay-Z in a freestyle battle. You see it took Nas' life work to beat Jay-Z's freestyles. PLus Nas backed out of Jay-Z's Pay PerView Challenge because he knows Jay is the master of freestyles.

Fact: Jay-Z and Biggie never wrote a song in their life. All was in their head. They freestyle through everything, or memorize a few bars. Freestylers don't have rhyme books. Did you see Nas in the booth on Tha Bassment in 99? Pure garbage. He started off spitting some booty rhyme and then it turned into one of his songs from Nastradamus. I was rapping it wit him!

Nas is one of the greatest MC's of all time, no doubt. But don't make it more than what it is. Canibus is te sickest nigga out. Period. His lyrics are unbelievable. he's got niggas with deals biting his rhymes.

Just like I'm a better emcee than these cunts who sit in here writing those blase cliches. TAKE THAT TO THE DOME. (LOL)

And Nas is the better lyricist in the rap-game now. Tupac didn't rhyme wit the same lyrical ability, he was just a tad bit catchier. And Jay-Z (for YWE) was never good enough to out-class Nas. If Jay-Z was to sit down and write a rhyme, it'll be more bullshit than how he's rhymin' now. Im watin for the BLACK ALBUM

OH MY GOD...

Nas is the greatest lyricist to ever grasp a mic and spit, besides Rakim "The God MC". Creating songs with content, meaning and lyrical excellence, then Nas is in a class of his own only joined by Talib Kweli, Mos Def, Blackthought and Rakim, but he's the best at writing than all of them. Illmatic is the greatest Rap album of all time(Period) and one of the top 20 greatest albums EVER(Period). From It Was Written to Nastradamus he showed lyrical depravation in his songs but stormed back and since then he's been the greatest lyricist of all time(Not Greatest Rap Artist You have to be real B.I.G. to get that.).

Now...Battling...Nas is a good battler don't get me wrong, but sitting down and delievering punchlines in a song that'll get people going "OOOOH, AHHHH", Eminem would destroy Nas and Canibus in a battle. I'm not saying that without facts....look at "Get U Mad", hilarious punchlines for days...

Examples

"I'll battle people who ain't got shit to do with it, like Cool J does."

"I'm sick enough to beat u to death with a FEATHER PILLOW."

"Beat Cage with 'Agent Orange' and whipe my ass with his page in 'Source'."

That's just a few...and that's just one of his many dis songs. Canibus usally have some incredible disses but u have to have a dictionary sitting next to you to get most of them. And Nas doesn't really dis.

08-05-2003, 12:12 PM
well if u sayin no emcee is on his level than ur wrong(everyone) cuz really to say that nas is way byond ne mc is just ignorance, cuz most of yall sayin nas would beet ne1,the question is who could give him a run for his money and all these mc's could(im not sayin will) give him a run or even beet him

canibus(good battler)
jay-z (he did giv him a run 4 his money alrdy)
em(good lyricist,impressive vocab n flo)
theres more, these are just the most known,(i aint countin the dead)

THE TRUTH
08-05-2003, 12:27 PM
NO, the question was: WHO CAN CHALLENGE NAS "LYRICALLY". Not "who can give him a run for his money?". We're judging the emcees (all of them) on their lyrical ability--meaning what they say and how they say it, while maintaining a stylistic character about their work. Thus to answer the question as you ^ did, would be wrong.

blakwid0w
08-05-2003, 12:46 PM
challenge nas lyrically doesnt necessarily mean beat him,to challenge a person lyrical ability u just hav to be up to their level lyrically speaking, and those 3 are up to his level, win or lose they could challenge him lyrically

Many, many emcees can challenge Nas lyrically in all aspects of his work.

Flow - Jay-Z
Storytelling - Slick Rick
Emotion - Tupac
Dedication - Tupac
Battling - Eminem, Jay-Z
Freestyling - Anybody who CAN freestyle - Nas can't
Intellect - Chuck D, Ras Kass, Talib Kweli
'Message' - Tupac
Hyping up a live crowd - Jay-Z, Nas can't rock a crowd for shit (yes, I have seen him live).

yea, I don't think Eminem is considered one of the best rappers of all time. He just has a lot of fans, but if u listen to some of his songs, they are bull s**t. He has some hot songs, but lyrically Nas and Jay-Z are better than him.

Karnage
09-26-2003, 10:04 PM
Whoa..Em's battles didn't start with Benzino and Ja Rule..son been battling since back in the days.. listen to "Get U Mad" where he got in Cage's and Canibus' ass real hard. Also listen to "Quitter" and any true Hip-Hop fan knows those are 2 incredible dis tracks. Now Em didn't give his all in that Ja thing I admitt..but it doesn't take that much to kill JA RULE...just like Jay didn't really get at "Jaz-O" that hard. Nas never really battled, besides that battle with Jay where he beat him. Now lyrically I think Nas is lyrically marvelous but he isn't how he was 2 years ago with "Stillmatic". I would say "NOW" listening to songs like "Zone Out", "Heaven" and songs from Em like "We All Die 1 Day" "Hey Lady" I say Em and Nas are equal now.(Sits back and waits for the responses!)

Both Nas and Eminem are tight.Nas is a much deeper rapper when it come to hood politics and such. You wanna talk about broken homes and a fucked up child hood, then Em's got it there.I guess it all depends on what type of lyrics move you most. This arguement can never be won.But I'd say...

Jada Kiss

Eminem

Why is it so popular to call Nas the G.O.A.T? He's not. If all his albums were on the calibre of Illmatic, then I'd definitely consider him one of the best, even though I hardly think it was the best thing ever released. But to state the obvious, the only album that came close afterwards was Stillmatic. Nas as he is now (should be interesting to hear his new stuff this year, though), would lose to Bis, Rakim, Em, Kool G and Talib (to name a few) in battles.

Nas as he was, despite the fact I prefer his new style, would at least give ANYONE a run for their money.

Oh, and as for the side-debate; Em would obliterate Nas in a battle, but in terms of intellect, vocab and conceptuality (not ignoring Sing for the Moment, Rock Bottom, Never 2 Far, Stimulate, etc), Nas takes it.

Why is it so popular to call Nas the G.O.A.T?

It's just that,a popular opinion.Thats all any of this really is.There are no facts here, just opinions. No one can ever say who the best rapper truely is.Hell,it's hard to even pull together a realistic list of what factors make the best and the worst. It's a really hard topic to argue.

aight, i dont know what the rest of u all on, but i dont think nas is that good. sure he got tight vocab and speaks some true shit, but i can think of people that are better off the top of my head. fabolous, joe budden, jadakiss, ludacris, talib, proof from d12 and em, jay z, jae hood, just to name a few. in terms of wordplay and punches, fab and budden rip nas to shreds. nas is hot thought, dont get me wrong, but i would say he can't be challenged lyrically

ludacris06
06-27-2004, 06:10 PM
Eminem would rip Nas any day. Before Em was an artist, all he did was battle rap. Jay-Z would rip Nas too because his flow alone is too much for Nas.

ludacris06
06-27-2004, 06:15 PM
Go listen to Infinite and tell me Nas is too much for Em. I also agree with MC Shadow. I think people sterotype rap so much that hip hop fans want to go listen to somthing that is "Real" and everyone dubs Nas as the realest rapper.

A whole lot of artists have better lyrical skills than Nas. You dont need to have morals or complex metaphors to be a great rapper. Especially when it comes to battle rap.

Wiz
06-27-2004, 08:29 PM
nah, son............Nas killed Jigga wit Ether and he definitely won the battle.........Jigga and Nas were the two best MC's out at one point, and u could throw Em in the mix, but personally, Em to me is overrated, the kid is sick, but people make it like he's untouchable...........Em could prolly rip Nas, but lyrically, i think if they sat down and wrote a diss and not freestyle, Nas would come out deeper and stronger................

Jigga threw some nice disses, but Nas mos def ended the beef wit Ether, Jigga never threw anything out that touched Ether

Wiz
06-27-2004, 08:30 PM
honorable mentions are Jadakiss..............the kid is nice, the things he speak, he just doesn't get his respect in the game, he gets it in the streets, but not so much in the rap industry itself......

Man, Ether had some bad lyrics and was just some elementary song. You see how bad Nas is when he doesnt use his rap book. I dont know about winning the battle with that one..

He was dissing Jay-Z man, not Common Sense, not Black Thought, not Canibus. You don't need deep rhymes to diss someone who's entire repertoire is full of nursery type rhymes. Plus - in order for the Jay-Z listeners to understand it, Nas could not deliver the complex shit he usually spits or their dumbasses would of been lost. Matter of fact, Nas is lucky it was Jay-Z that dissed him cause had an Eminem, a Rakim, a Kool G, a Chino XL come at him Nas' career would of DEFINITELY been over. Jay-Z was the perfect adversary - a dude with nursery type rhymes that has no street credit and that can't battle worth a shit. Easy victory for a nice comeback.

Ludicris06 is a weirdo.. another Eminem zombie rooting for "The Great White Hope" who doesn't understand real lyrics worth a damn... Nas Is number four of all time..

1. 2pac (I love this nigga so much)
2. Big L
3. Biggie
4. Nas
5. Canibus (I don't care what know one says, he's ill)

If ya'll know anything about Hip Hop, then you would of realized that Nas has the best Flow and poetic lyrics out right now.... Who ever says that Jay-Z has A better flow is stupid, coz Jay-Z got his flow from Nas...
Also, You see that Eminem isn't even in my top five. I would have him in a tie with Canibus, but Canibus is underrated while Em is overrated, I give Bis that leeway.. Also the only thing that Em is better at than Bis, or any one for that matter, is rhyming.....

In delivery we have...

Overall Quality of Lyrics: Tupac, hands down...
you know how music does something to you, also the right words can make you tremble.. Pac had that, he just said the right things..

Pure Lyrics: Canibus.. the most creative when it comes to vocab and word usage....

Style & Rhythm: Biggie.... ya'll already knew that, no one will get yo heads bobbin like him...

Punchlines: Big L, haha, i luv him.... he was the greatest rapper of all time to me, hence the word "Rapper" and not MC.. two different things...

Message: Nas and 2Pac had the best messages that can touch the heart, they actually did something for Hip Hop..

Poetry: Pac And Nas

Intellect & Wisedom: Canibus for Intellect and Pac had the wisedom, straight game....

Wordplay & Jokes: This is Eminem Country, he runs this because he is funny and can rhyme very well.. that is the furthest I go with him though..

Now Nas should be respected, he fuckin deserves it.. the only reason that I put Biggie in front of Nas is because Biggie is dead, out of respect and relative contributions to rap.. basically Biggie did more at the time that he was alive, but If Biggie and Nas were both just some unknown rappers, i'd go with Nas.... I suggest that ya'll download some songs from "The Lost Tapes" from Nas, you might come back and thank me...................

The best mc and rapper out there is Nas, im not gonna say why. Hes just makes the best musik and i like it the most. The lost tapes is a real good cd best three songs on it is Black Zombie, Purple, and Doo Rags.
my second favorite mc is 2pac, he might be better then nas but i like nas musik more, whar can i say. third favorite is... DMX. i know hes not very popular but i still think hes great.

i think it all about how you feel any one can beat any one on any day but if your talkin a bout of past battle verses koo moe dee, may be LL he a good battler to may be canibus
but not:
jay Z (he a bitch and cant win without usin other peoples rhymes)
Memphis bleek (he a bitch for startin sum and not finishin)
eminem (can you remember a good battle verse for em...no)
50 cent (wouldn't have nuthin to say)

but if you about battilin more about what you know about some one and not how good you are thats why some of the best people suck at online battlin cause that shit fake you gotta know a person past history or somethin 50 knew JA same hood BiG knew PAC they ran tagether for a minute nas knew jigga (i dont know how) easy knew DRE same group.....

the only people who are as good as Nas lyrically are Pac, Royce, Eminem and Canibus.

I'm very sorry but when you are talking about and lyrically tight rappers, Tupac does not fit the catergory. Right about now lyrically I feel Nas is in a class of his own and can't be really compared. Royce 5'9" got skills but I do not feel that he is deep enough to drown me like my boy Escobar. Eminem is presently lyrically asleep and I do not see him even reaching the ankles of Nas. Canibus is tight but his grip doesn't match the multiple capabilities of the former prince (presently KING) Nas. And that's my word point blank.

No street credibility for Jay? Thats crazy as hell..I can't think of a rapper hustlers relate more too, I can think of a thousand lines that proves Jay hustled..cause there are somethings only crooks(or law enforcement) would know... for instance..

"Lost 92 bricks had to fall back
Knocked a nigga off his feet, but I crawled back
Had A-1 credit, got more crack
From the first to the fifth, gave it all back
If, I'm not a hustler what you call that?
This is before rap, this is all fact"

"Came from the bottom of the block I
When I was born, it was sworn, I was never gon' be shit
Had to pull the opposite out this bitch
Had to get my ri-ide on
Eyes on the prize, Shawn knew I had to
Had to had to get these chips
Had to make moves like Olajuwon
Started out sellin dimes and nicks
Graduated to a brick
No exaggeration, my infatuation with the strip
Legendary like a schoolboy
Crushin merely nearly every every chick"(Side note, this is an incredible simile)

He says he is not a rapper, over and over..thats he is a hustler, and Nas defintely can't out hustle like Jay, as evidenced by the 320 million dollar net worth. What is Nas worth? Poetry is an extension of life events. How much does Nas donate to chartity? Jay is a proven philantropist. Thats why the Blueprint 2 trumps Ether. example...

"Won't break you a crumb of the little bit that he makes
And this is with whom you want to place your faith?
I put dollars on mine, ask Columbine
When the Twin Towers dropped, I was the first in line
Donating proceeds off every ticket sold
When I was out on the road, that's how you judge Hov, no?
Ain't I supposed to be absorbed myself?
Every time there's a tragedy, I'm the first one to help
They call me this misogynist, but they don't call me the dude
To take his dollars to give gifts at the projects
These dudes is all politics, depositing checks" It's about putting your money where you mouth is. That gives more meaning to his lyrics.

Are we talking purely mainstream here? Cuase i personally think Immortal Technique isn't that far behind Nas, lyrically. Canibus would'nt be too far off either for me.
If you were to mention vets, what about Rakim, Krs or Bdk, someone along those lines could definatley challenge Nas imo. But the only thing with mentioning that is (with all due respects to them) that they'd have to get up of they ass and go write somethin, which i can't see any of 'em doing in the forseeable future.
The thing with Jay-Z is like he himself admitted, he dumbed down, so many won't see him as genuwine competeion lyrically. I myself would dissagree with that, cuase i think Jay at his best lyrically is a match for anyone.
Tupac, i always think was overrated somewhat lyrically, yes he had deep lyrics, yes he was good, but nothing mind blowing lyrically.
I'd agree Nas is currently the best lyricist in the game, but maybe not as far ahead as people make him out to be.

Peace out, Phy-Flo.
