View Full Version : Rap Going Pop
RITAX 08-04-2003, 03:00 PM I WANNA ASK YOU SOMETHING,
I HAD A DISCUSSION . WITH A FRIEND HERE ON THE FORUM AND I AM BRINGING THE ISSUE FOR EVERYONE . WHY DO YOU THINK RAP HAS BECOME SO POPULAR AMONG SO DIVERSE PEOPLE AND WHY DO YOU THINK YOUNG PEOPLE OUT OF THE GHETTOS LIKE IT SO MUCH ? DO YOU THINK THAT LESS-AWARE LISTENERS OF RAP ARE HOLDING WRONG IDEAS OF WHAT RAP IS AND THIS IS CHANGING RAP ?
Token 08-04-2003, 03:30 PM yea but only 2 da wrong rappers, like when they hear Nelly, P.diddy, Ja rule and fairys like dat..
Dre Blaze 08-04-2003, 03:46 PM who says those are the WRONG rappers just cuz they flow is not sophisticated and.... so what i know niggas who got flow out of this world but cant rock a show worth shyt. So there are no wrong or right rappers simply because some rappers speak to certain ppl. Anyway the reason why ppl are gettng the wrong idea about rap doesnt have shyt to do with the rappers, but everthing to do with the the greedy record labels and their executives who only want these flashy, club hit type acts on their label, and the radio stations who only play these pop type rap songs. The blame for the misrepresentation of rap and hip hop on as a whole lies of the shoulders of these ppl becauze they decide who gets on and gets heard and who stays on the underground. thats all i got to say. 1
Lisa16 08-04-2003, 04:00 PM Stop complaining..If you think its so bad, do something about it.
~Eclipse~ 08-04-2003, 04:19 PM omg, this thread is boring...
I reckon at the moment the urban industry is a fashion, some peeps just listen to it cause its cool at tha moment. After a few years it will soon wear of and industry will be left with pure hip hop heads.
Peace
RITAX 08-04-2003, 05:12 PM DO YOU THINK PEOPLE WILL CARE FOR THE TRUE OR UNTRUE RAP HEADS FOR THE SAME REASONS ? DO YOU THINK THAT THE AUTHENTIC PRODUCTION WILL STAY UNAFFECTED BY WHAT'S HAPPENING NOW? I DON'T...
AS FOR LISA, IF SOMEONE TOLD YOU TO CHANGE THE MODE OF CLASSIC MUSIC WORLWIDE IN ITS CURRENT FORM , HOW EXACTLY WOULD YOU ACCOMPLISH IT ? HOW MANY THINGS WOULD YOU BE ABLE TO DO ABOUT IT ?
RedScare 08-04-2003, 07:23 PM I think this is a good discussion. Rap going pop? What you talkin about? Rap now is pop. Even the dopest in the mainstream like Eminem (Without Me) and JayZ (Izzo Hova) gotta make at least one shitty radio friendly song just to get air play. Its cuz of the labels but you have to look at the bigger picture. Its not entirely their fault. Mainstream white culture still doesnt understand hiphop yet. And this is messin up the music a whole lot cuz theyre greeting it with open arms. They just dont understand whats hot and whats not. So if you look at it like that, why would the labels want to sell a product to the masses that they dont want? Especially when the executives at the labels themselves think they know what the people want. Why would they pour millions of $$ into a real artist when they probably feelin P Diddy and Nelly more?
ganji 08-05-2003, 07:18 AM its a sad truth....
RITAX 08-05-2003, 10:57 AM Why do you consider these artists so irresponsible for their radio compromise and the bad quality of their songs? Where is their gutsiness to popularise more issue-broad rap? i mean Eminem popularised slapping women whithout the compulsion from any radio station and suddenly got afraid to do politically-brave rap for other issues?
what do you mean by saying that mainstream white culture doesn't understand hip hop , how should it be understood ,but isn't ? Why not saying that mainstream white culture embraces the less disturbing elements oif hip hop , pushing down the social justice asking character of it and pretends to be upset by fakely important but less worthy for them issues such asd the ati-gayness of hip hop ?
i think labels are just gatekeepers that define what's hot or not on the principle of record-sale athleticism. Why diddy is soooooo hot ? Or nelly ?
Kataracks 08-05-2003, 02:07 PM LMAO@this thread. This question has been answered numerous times
Before the RUN-DMC era, hiphop was rejected by most people (not only whites but blacks as well). People were not willing to accept the message and truth behind the lyrics of peeps living in the projects..
Run-DMC comes out with a song (Walk this way), that has an instrumental purely derived from rock music, what happens?? Its the first so-called "hiphop" album to go platinum. All of a sudden record labels are in high demand for rap. But instead of taking the music for what it really is, they manipulate our culture to attract a larger "white" and "young" fan base and the sad truth behind it is that you have so called "rappers" willing to compromise themselves to move a few units.
This is what pop music is about, its about being a star. The quality of the music goes down the drain and its all about the materialistic lyrics and catchy yet quickly forgotten instrumentals and hooks. Songs quickly become a fad.
Fortunatley there are few out there who underastand this and try to keep the quality of thier music as real as possible. This is the real hiphop......Where do you find this??? In the underground because 95% of the "hiphop" industry is based on the pop culture.
RITAX 08-06-2003, 04:18 PM my question was more about what makes rap so popular among so many and diverse people in your opinion, a discussion on its hooks rather than labels' stance.
Labels are money-driven bussinessses they would capitalize on anything that fortifies the music market, pop. rap, anything. Unfortunatelly all the traditional pop techniques have so much been overused that pop is dying steadily and there isn't much energy and true mood to rock the system among artists either, So from now on there will be rap and rnb as the basic music forms. What concerns me is that they are being used to keep people apart than closed
Multiplaxed, 08-08-2003, 12:30 PM Denz said it.. Its just simply a fad, a fashion..

agree^^...i cant wait till it wears off and we are left with pure hip hop heads...
SpiritualDragon 08-10-2003, 05:35 AM if some people are only into a certain genre of a music for the merits that it appeals to only a certain portion of music listeners, then they are listening to that genre for the wrong reasons. why is it so bad that hip hop is spreading? its a good thing
RITAX 08-10-2003, 01:02 PM itsn't an issue of being simply good or bad thing its for who and why its good or bad.... it is impressing me that you think that hip hop will be the same after all this pop effects... what if it doesn;t wear off for reallopenly) reasons. i wonder for how long this y long time ? i am simly implying that too many people are listening to the same music genre often for contested ( not-openly) reasons. i wonder for how long........
infamous 08-10-2003, 01:28 PM BLAME THE NEPTUNES FOR COLLABOS LIKE JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE AND THE CLIPSE!! AND FOR NEW ODB SONGS LIKE "POP"SHIT...
RITAX 08-10-2003, 01:44 PM true , i don't see the issue as just underground v pop hop but more as an enforced attempt from labels at eroding political differences and just go partying ...no what i mean?
Black Geesus 08-16-2003, 12:48 AM I think rap is going pop most the songs on BET sound pop
SpiritualDragon 08-16-2003, 03:44 AM you are labeling people as hip hop. If someone can make hip hop music, and make pop pusic, does that make his hip hop songs pop? Nope. Hip Hop will always be hip hop, some artists won't always be
RedScare 08-17-2003, 08:17 PM I think rap is going pop most the songs on BET sound pop
Hell ya...
amy_qb 08-21-2003, 02:28 PM I totally agree. With people like Justin Timberlake and all the crappy UK stuff, it's just giving rap a bad name.
MEimjustME 08-21-2003, 08:34 PM true. people like p.diddy, nelly, murphy (all them guys) are makin it no longer rap, no longer hip hop, more like hip pop.
Black Geesus 08-24-2003, 10:44 PM Rap is becoming pop because all these south rapperz

amy_qb 08-28-2003, 02:39 PM ^^^^^^^^^
LMAO
Bone Thug 09-06-2003, 03:41 PM its will smith and p diddy who hav fucked rap up
we gotta get it back 2 tha old days wit dre and pac, proper hip hop, not this fuckin will smith - men in black shit
RedScare 09-07-2003, 07:09 PM The thing thats fucked up about hiphop right now is that its not equally represented like it used to be. All that the labels are allowin to be in the mainstream is pop-rap (ie. club music, party music). That and watered-down gangsta rap.
