View Full Version : Grammaticals and such...
Aphraedite 04-19-2007, 01:49 AM ok, so I think I made "grammaticals" up... but anyway, here's the deal.
My job relies heavily on proper grammar, spelling, punctuation, and overall, a matery ofthe English launguage. The messages I send to customers are evaluated at random, and there are certain guidelines I need to follow. I had a bit of a disagreement with my evaluator, and decided I'd ask around here and see if I could get an answer since I am having a difficult time with it...
Which of these looks correct to you? Do they look the same? Is there a right or wrong way to put it? If anyone has any link that they can provide that demonstrates the proper usage, please let me know...
" Please sign in to "My Account" at www.sirius.com with your username and password."
--OR--
"Please sign into "My Account" at www.sirius.com with your username and password."
The "SIGN IN TO/ SIGN INTO" part is where the conflict lies.
I believe that the proper use is "Sign in to" because the complete verb would be "Sign in", not just "sign."
Her take on it was that you are doing the act of "signing" INTO the "My Account" section.
I can see it both ways, and just want clarification if anyone can provide any insight.
..dizzying, isn't it???
PAX DECEPTICVS 04-19-2007, 03:21 AM Two words.
in, into, in to: in refers to a direction, location, or position. [in the South] into
indicates movement. [He shot the dart right into my calf.] in to indicates two
separate functions. [The door of his room was open, so I walked in to see my father.]

..The major issue you have here is the fact that the word "in" is actually a monomorphemic Adposition. They tend to become integrated into the verb at times depending on the conditional situation which is why there's such an issue. There are simple and complex adpositions but because of the fact that they're usually used in conjunction with free combinations of words, the arguement is more difficult. In this case, the adposition is the verbal complement..
..Long story short, I believe you were correct. The term "into" makes reference (in syntax) to being involved. Whether it's a length of time, location, or direction, etc. The term "in" is usually a reference to some form of inclusion, if I remember correctly. The exmaples that Tim posted show it clearly. When "into" is used, the word it's attached to is not the verb; but the verb is immediately followed by the adposition in the second example. But believe me, the line is to blurry to make a determinative arguement, though..
P.S.
..I would surmise that "grammatical" can be considered a word. Afterall, "grammaticalisation" is a word, as weird as it sounds..

PAX DECEPTICVS 04-22-2007, 12:56 AM ^So he has an advanced technical knowledge of the English language compared to the average Joe. STFU DUMB-DUMB. :)
Plug Zero 04-22-2007, 11:45 AM Don't you find it a little suspect tho. The way he threw in that mammoth of a word all non-chalantly. I thought he was taking the piss when I first read it.
innit i dont even know what elitist is. :(
PAX DECEPTICVS 04-22-2007, 04:01 PM innit i dont even know what elitist is. :(
That's because your kind are shit at basic English. :(
Or maybe he's just more intelligant than your willing to allow, and thus he uses technical terminology because they're the correct terms to use, Monsieur Plug de la Zero. 8-)

..Monomorphemic is a much simpler word when you break it up. Mono - which means "one" or a singularity; and morpheme - which is basically a word or word element that can't be broken down (covalence categorization). It's not my fault that you don't know them. If you think I was bad with Linguistics, you don't want to get in an argument with me about simplified Theoretical Physics..8-)
You damn elitist!..You may be correct. If you use the direct definition of an elitist, then I may fit the bill. Those who really know me feel otherwise, but you're entitled to your opinion. Remember, I'm not one of the 16 or 17 year olds on this board. I was an Engineering major in college..
..The reason I have anime in my sig is because....well...I like anime. Not much to it there..
..In summation, the day that your opinion weighs so heavily on my conscience that I'd give two shits will be a cold day in Hell. My advice to you will be to leave this "elitist" and find more "plebeians" to worry about. Your words fall on deaf ears and you need a hobby..:(

..If you really have an issue, I would hope you can be adult enough to contact me through a PM or something. I don't get involved in the net-beef you younginz like to get into. I give respect and expect it in return. Simple right?
