Homer Simpson went to the local Dunkin' Donuts. He ordered 12 donuts and was pleasantly surprised to discover he received 2 more than he expected . Why did Homer expect to be given 10 donuts?

Yeah, this is a dead serious question. One of my teachers put this up in class, due Friday. He said it does have relations to some types of sciences or something so no bullshit answers.

I myself have no clue...

The Science Of It:

So The Night Before, Homer Was In Bed With Marge. They Hadn't Been Intimate Lately So She Let Him Have The Yellow Puss. So He Began Fucking The Shit Outta That Puss Til She Said She Was Sore. Homer, The Horny Muffucka That Dude Is...Said "Bitch, Let Me Put It In The Butt". Marge Rejected The Offer, So Homer Tied Her Down And Shoved It In The Butt.

He Had A Dream About How He Shouldnt Have Gone For Two Holes (Remember This. This Is A Foreshadowing Event). God Came To Him In A Dream And Said "HOMER, ONE HOLE IS BETTER THAN TWO." ...Then There Was A Pause. And Then God Said "AH FUCK IT, TWO HOLES IS BETTER THAN ONE."

Homer Woke Up The Next Morning, Hungry From Having So Much Cartoon Sex. So The Dude Went To The Fridge And Saw Nothing There. So He Went To The Donut Store. Still Happy From The Butt Sehcks, He Went To The Counter And Ordered A Dozen. Still Thinking Of The Two Holes He Had That Previous Night...He Got The Doughnuts To See He Got 12 Donuts...All With Holes. Well, He Had Two Holes The Night Before, So He Figured God Would Have Zapped Two From The Box. But Didnt.

Math Of It :

2 Holes = Pussy And Butt Hole
Dozen Donuts = 12 Donuts (ALL WITH HOLES)

Math :

12 - 2 = 10.

He Thought He Was Going To Get Ten, But Instead Got 12.

..The only relation I can think of with The Simpsons and math would be the Fermat-Wiles Theorm. It's something that's relatively popular among Simpson fans and mathematicians alike..

..I don't have too much information on it so I'll look it up and get bacc to you by tomorrow. I don't know if it's the correct answer but that's the best conjecture I can conjure off the top, so it's a relatively good place to start. Apparently there are recurring mathematical themes in the show so it only seemed plausible that it could be it..

..I'll be bacc..

Well, the course is Physics. We did have a brief lecture about electricity and magnetism but I'm pretty damn sure it ain't got to do with none of that. This is the end-of-the-year thing and he said to combine your knowledge and think with logic so I really don't think I could get any more specific, this question popped out of nowhere. I'm guessing this could do something with math.

Gotta admit though, this got me kinda curious.

Well it seems, due to not being present for your classes, that this would be next to impossible for someone else to answer. There's just not enough information given to even come up with some kind of educated guess lol.

Maybe someone else will have better luck.

~Damien~

Isn't that math?
..Yeah it is, but the Theorem seems to be pretty relevant in the field of physics by way of dimensional analysis. I don't know extensively but I was trying to get some more info on it online and since I didn't find time yesterday at work, I figured I'd give it another try today..

..But like I said, I could be very wrong..LOL..

..The only plausible idea was the individual who indicated about our 10-base system. I doubt that's the answer only because it has nothing to do with Physics. That's more of a philosophical question dealing more with the semanitcs of subjective interpretation (I have 10 fingers, I use a 10-base system; you have four fingers, you use an eight-base system...would someone born into our society with eight fingers initially have an eight-base number system). Too many semantics..

..However, he could be right. I guarantee that I'll think of something after my meeting today..

Say he counted with his hands. When we count with our hands, we have 5 digits on each, so those that do count to twelve using hands would use both hands, and then count back on two digits.

Homer, however, has 4 digits on each hand, so if he were to count using both hands and then two fingers again, he'd get 10.

That's the best I can think of, with the science being anatomy, rather than physics.

~Damien~

Homer, however, has 4 digits on each hand, so if he were to count using both hands and then two fingers again, he'd get 10.
..It makes sense when you break it down that way. My question on that would be, why ask for 12? If he counted with his fingers, he'd come up with 10 regardless, right? If he specifically asked for 12, we have to rule out the idea that counting on hands with less than five fingers had a significance on his reaction..

..What I would like is the exact verbiage of the question. I can see where Tim's idea stands if and only if Homer asked for "a dozen" donuts. That's when the term "dozen" becomes not only subjective to Homer but rather relative to the "universe" he lives in (given the stipulation that everyone has four fingers on each hand)..

..Given the question we have, we have to figure out why Homer felt that his 12 is not our 12, but rather our 10..

..I've got no definitive answer right now. I'm torn between two answers. If I'm gonna figure this out, I'll need Old English and a blunt..

Basically... Homer ordered 12, expecting 10. This suggests that Homer's 12 is our 10.......... In terms of my limited knowledge of physics and/or my decent knoweldge of maths, the only logical reasoning I can give that Homer can't count or that they have a different numerical basis in Springfield..

Its interesting, I'll keep thinking about it, althought its probably after the date you needed it.

im prob WAYYY off but i figured i'd try.

I websters.com searched Twelve and the very first answer is :

twelve /twɛlv/ Pronunciation Key - Show Spelled Pronunciation[twelv] Pronunciation Key - Show IPA Pronunciation,
–noun
1. a cardinal number, 10 plus 2.

so then I searched "cardinal number" in the dictionary there and got:

cardinal number

noun
the number of elements in a mathematical set; denotes a quantity but not the order

So as in the ORIGINAL number could be: 12 but the cardinal number could be 1,2, 300 w/e. As long as it equals out to 12.... EX: Cardinal number 84-72=12.

Maybe? He asked for the cardinal number 12 but meant 10.

No-where in the question does it actually say how many he recieved. It says he ordered 12 and recieved two more then he expected. It says he ordered 12 not that he ordered a dozen. The wording matters. Surley this means he recieved 14 donuts? Not 12. Which Means that homer didn't expect 10 donuts at all.

I've came up with my own theory....

Homer may have only given the man enough money for 10 donuts but decided to chance his luck and ask for 12 then to his surprise the man doesn't notice Homer has under-paid him and gives him the extra 2 unpaid for donuts.

Only problem with this is, it makes plenty of sense but what's it got to do with Philosophy?
